How can my DD style this dress?

We've had a difficult time with DD prom dress but finally found this which fits her beautifully and she looks amazing in it (she's a curvy size 8). I worry it's not 'prom' enough though (friends in glittery stuff, ball type gowns etc).

Can anyone suggest shoes, jewellery, bags, hair, makeup look etc? We are not great with style at all! No idea what colours or styles would be good. She is 16yo, 3/4 Asian, fairly conservative in style, dark wavy hair about 4 inches below shoulder. She likes gold jewellery and will reject silver. Any suggestions would be great as we can use for inspo even if out of our budget.

That a beautiful, completely appropriate dress! Very elegant, much nicer than glitter and frills. I'd just go simple, hair up so it looks more put together, gold jewelry and a clutch bag. Honestly not sure what else to suggest as it's a gorgeous dress and not at all under dressed

angelinawasrobbed · 30/05/2025 15:21

It is very elegant and SIMPLE!

so don’t overstyle it ?

nude nails, sandals, bag , gold bracelets , small earrings

I think dangly / bigearrings and nechklaces would fight with the single strap

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/05/2025 15:29

Thanks so much. Do you think nude sandals not gold? And nude bag. She's 16 so I don't want her to look too 'old' but on the other hand it's so beautiful on her that don't want to detract. Can do hair up. Would anything go in the hair?

I think either. She might get more use out of nude

How about shoulder jewellery to bring a bit more ‘bling’ in an unusual way? Google ‘bridal shoulder jewellery’ and you’ll see what I mean, not sure of the proper name!

What a beautiful dress!

Beautiful dress. Can I ask where it's from?

It's a Goddiva dress from Asos. They have it in a few colours (4, I think). She would normally go for dark red (which they had sold out of) but this colour actually looks amazing!

Thank you. It's actually even more flattering on than in the pic! The waist is gorgeous. The fabric is stretchy, which is great to create a perfect fit. I got her a 10 which was perfect even though she's more often an 8, depending on the brand/ style. Many 10s I got were way too big/ just hung off and 8s were a bit tight on her bust and bum. We were about to give up!

I think an up do and blingy gold earings would be nice

TheLeadbetterLife · 30/05/2025 19:00

It's a very pretty dress. I'm not sure about the suggestions for nude accessories, she's a teenager, not a 35 year old going to a wedding. Especially if her friends are going more glitzy.

I put "powder blue prom dress styling gold accessories" into Pinterest and got some nice results - have attached a couple here.

The blue flowers in hair and blue and gold bracelets are pretty, and I would say gold sandals for sure. I agree with a pp that necklaces don't work with a one-shoulder dress, but bracelets or cuffs, and earrings would look nice.

There are seashell, starfish and tropical-themed jewellery and hair accessories around at the moment, which could be fun. Lots of things on Asos if you filter by colour.

She's young, have fun with it!

I’d go with silver or gold for shoes and bag. Personally I’d prefer silver but that’s a personal choice.
if you wanted to bling it up slightly you could add a suitably sized brooch with diamanté, in the centre of the strap or where the strap meets the front of the dress.
It doesn’t need it though.

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/05/2025 19:56

Thanks so much! It actually has 2 straps as one is off the shoulder so I don't think shoulder jewellery will work. (One strap might be nicer but anyway, the shape is lovely). I didn't know you could do such a specific Pinterest search. That's such a brilliant idea. Need to have fun without going too bridesmaid.

Started to think about burgundy shoes and bags as her glasses are burgundy! Not sure. I'm trying to persuade her not to wear her glasses. Arghhh... and all in the middle of GCSE revision (she's grown out of the dress we bought originally, luckily only off Vinted).

Oh she can wear her glasses! Look for images of Ali Wong on the red carpet - she always rocks her specs.

deeahgwitch · 31/05/2025 08:58

I think burgundy would be too heavy a colour for shoes / bag as the dress is so light coloured, certainly on my phone screen.

TheLeadbetterLife · 31/05/2025 09:17

Yes agree that you don't want burgundy accessories, but she can just wear the glasses if she wants to, they don't need to match anything.

2chocolateoranges · 31/05/2025 09:22

Not burgundy,

with pale blue I’d go for silver or gold accessories, strappy heels, clutch bag, chunky bangle/bracelet with simple earrings. I wouldn’t wear a necklace as I love the neckline of the dress and wouldn’t want to add anything to it.

Hair up too to show off neckline of dress.

GreenCandleWax · 31/05/2025 09:25

Its gorgeous. I'd go for hair up, some large statement earrings, a bracelet and that's it for jewelry - definitely no necklace or chain. Understated bag and shoes. Nothing to detract attention away from how she looks in the dress itself.

poetryandwine · 31/05/2025 10:36

Wonderful dress! She will be able to wear it into adulthood, unlike most prom dresses.

Because proms are a bit blingy and the dress is understated, I agree that if the budget permits gold strappy sandals are best. The dress only needs drop earrings but a great bracelet or bracelets or a brooch would also work well. Or should jewellery. Not all if this, though!

Your DD will shine.

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/05/2025 12:03

OK, thanks everyone. No burgundy then. It's v v pale, possibly lighter than pic. And no necklace.

But @TheLeadbetterLifeI googled and Ali Wong's glasses all co ordinate with her red carpet looks! 😭😂

This kind of thing? Or please help if you want to stop vicariously for a 16yo!

She's not fussy with Vinted shoes or jewellery, we just give them a clean! She's a size 4.5/ 5 bit big but prob won't wear for long 😅.

Definitely a hair up - maybe some star pins dotted about for extra sparkle. As she’s 16 I’d do gold heels and clutch, simply dainty gold choker and earrings and a couple of stacked bangles, Cartier love bracelet style.

bettyjane · 31/05/2025 12:25

You could maybe find a gold bag with a bit of burgundy to try and tie in the glasses and shoes? My daughter wore her glasses to prom and I thought she looked fab.

possibly something like this? (But I’m not a teenager so don’t know if it would be considered ok for the occasion, maybe not glittery enough for prom!) www.tedbaker.com/products/poseii-lt-pink?variant=50376583250241&country=GB&stkn=1690d4ad124d&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google+Shopping&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22368578870&gbraid=0AAAAADlozOTBxnfkXPgaKWtWS4Qe7h1Mn&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0erBBhDTARIsAKO8iqSW51npwN-ru0BVLkgb0l3J9TAffvV9E7Gdq7A1Ehuey9Qj1rjj93UaAiowEALw_wcB

Also to get an idea of what looks good together I like to put things together in something like pic collage to get an idea of how they go together
Just had a play around with the dress and some gold/burgundy type bags ..
