How can my DD style this dress?

We've had a difficult time with DD prom dress but finally found this which fits her beautifully and she looks amazing in it (she's a curvy size 8). I worry it's not 'prom' enough though (friends in glittery stuff, ball type gowns etc).

Can anyone suggest shoes, jewellery, bags, hair, makeup look etc? We are not great with style at all! No idea what colours or styles would be good. She is 16yo, 3/4 Asian, fairly conservative in style, dark wavy hair about 4 inches below shoulder. She likes gold jewellery and will reject silver. Any suggestions would be great as we can use for inspo even if out of our budget.

It's a beautiful dress and so much lovelier than those gaudy dresses you see. I'm sure she is going to look gorgeous!

It is very elegant and SIMPLE!

so don’t overstyle it ?

nude nails, sandals, bag , gold bracelets , small earrings

I think dangly / bigearrings and nechklaces would fight with the single strap

These are my thoughts too. It's a lovely dress, the whole beauty lies in its simplicity so keeping accessories simple will allow the dress to shine.

Tiswa · 31/05/2025 14:12

DD and her friends are wearing similar (DD is yellow as her favourite colour!)
is she gold or silver as accessories - mine is definitely gold all the way so has gold sandals will have a gold clutch bag and a gold necklace and earringd

stayathomegardener · 31/05/2025 14:32

How about gold wedges as there are always photos on lawns and potentially easier to dance in.

Per a special gold bracelet as a keepsake/GCSE gift, my DD still wears her GCSE Tiffany T ring 11 years later.

poetryandwine · 31/05/2025 15:09

Personally I love simplicity, but proms tend to be about glitz and bling. I think only a very high fashion girl with a lot of self confidence would feel right taking a minimalist approach to styling this dress for prom.

I di think the gold clutch AI turned up for @MrsPositivity1 could work.

It's getting good. Very nice.

I agree with the posters saying not to over style this. It's a gorgeous dress, if she has good hair and keeps everything simple she'll be a star of the evening. If she as into this as you are?

Oh the gold keepsake bracelet is a lovely idea! She would love that so much.

She's definitely not confident nor high fashion! However, she likes what she likes so I hope she will feel beautiful and won't feel left out on the night. Most of her friends are bling or boobs or both but she is not comfortable with boobs and not really drawn to the bling. The dress does feel a bit tame, though I'm glad people like it.

Do you have any ideas to make it more prommy?

Also to get an idea of what looks good together I like to put things together in something like pic collage to get an idea of how they go together
Just had a play around with the dress and some gold/burgundy type bags ..

Thanks so much for doing this. It's such a good idea.

@dudsville Is she as into this as you are?

I don't think so 😂. She's actually really sick today (fingers crossed she's better by maths paper 2 on Wednesday). But I know what she's like and she's going to start thinking about it 2 days before or even the night before prom and then we'll be having a BIG stress - so I am prepping now as I'm on half term! After this I won't have time to think about it either. She was really thrilled with the dress when she tried it. I think she knows what she wants when she sees it, but doesn't necessarily know what to look for.

That's so clever! Thank you! I can actually see now how a necklace doesn't really work, it was hard to understand why people said no necklace with that neckline.

I think the earlier ideas about a somewhat formal hairstyle and drop earrings were good prom-think. Maybe some bracelets on one arm?

I loved the idea of gold sandals.

She doesn’t need to be the blingiest girl at the prom, but with this beautiful, simple dress I am guessing she doesn’t want to feel dressed like a middle aged mum at a country club - or even Melania Trump who, though I loathe her politics and greed, is physically gorgeous and would look great in the dress with the AI suggestions but is over 50.

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/05/2025 19:42

Thank you. She will definitely not be the blingiest girl at prom. We live in Essex! Would you say diamanté earrings/ bag etc?

Hi, OP -

I hope you are asking us all, because I am not British and don’t know much about Essex.

Does DD like diamante? IIRC she is 3/4 Asian so it could look very good with her colouring. I would say, a limited amount of diamante could work - maybe on earrings and one bracelet? But perhaps then with a plainer bracelet or bracelets for contrast, and not on the bag also.

I think two or threebracelets on one arm is where this dress can take the most by way of accessories.

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/05/2025 20:27

Perfect. Thanks poetry, that's really helpful. I am asking everyone for ideas! Particularly if you understand 16yo girls and prom fashion. I'm sure DD will pick and choose anyway.

Essex is in the East of England and it's famous for fake tans, fake lashes, lip fillers, and LOTS of sparkle.

My dd wore an almost identical slinky white dress from Zara, she's also a size 8, dark hair. She wore her hair up in a large 'messy bun' with tendrils coming down, v pretty, with gold earrings, quite large from john lewis - three circles/discs dangling beneath each other. Gold clutch, gold strappy flat sandals.

Your daughter will look beautiful, as mine did! She was the only one in white and saw this as a great thing.

If she has long thick hair, down with a “hollywood” wave pulled over one shoulder!

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/05/2025 22:31

That sounds lovely @gerbo

Her hair is ridiculously thick and heavy, so much so that I don't think it's long enough to stay over one shoulder despite being half way to elbow.
