Where do you buy your clothes?
I am 44 and I don't know where I am supposed to shop these days. I don't have a huge budget but I think I have outgrown 'disposable fashion'.
I like Boden, Kew, White Stuff, Principles but can't always afford them, apart from sales.
I live in a small town with limited shopping opportunities so need to do mail order mostly.
I think I'm in a style rut, as evidenced by yesterday's panic buy summer clothes thread and I need a bit of shaking up.
There must be more people like me on Mumsnet, how do you all keep from dwindling into dowdy fleece-ridden middle age?

'Twas me !!! Glad to have been of help but sorry it cost so much!

When I order from Redoute it is delivered by someone locally. If I need to return, it is just left outside my front door and picked up by the same person... dead easy!

Hope the clothes are good WWW !

Gap Zara French connection Diesel and levis for jeans and then individual small shops for special occasions.bags and shoes keep you looking current without being like mutton!H and M have an organic cotton range and there are some lovely things there.

noddyholder · 21/05/2008 22:58

I am 43 this year and don't have too many rules apart from if i wore it the first time round and looked good i will look crap this time!

what are they?I can assure you i looked hot in orange leggings last time but this time its a no!

RosaLuxembourg · 21/05/2008 23:07

Yes, orange leggings not a good look on the WOACA. See also ra ra skirts, those baggy pants that double as shoplifting trousers or emergency parachutes, and stone wash jeans.

I thought White Stuff was for surfer babes? And Fat Face? Surfer, skier, fit young lovelies?

I will have a look at their stuff since you are all telling me you shop there.

On the same topic, I have a couple of nice things from Red Herring which is not as surfer-esque as I thought.

SilentTerror · 22/05/2008 12:00

Fat Face more surfer, but occasional nice summer dresses and casual trousers. Have a couple of cardigans from there too.
White Stuff is my fave at the moment. Don't find it surfery aat all;great skirts, dresses and tunicy tops.
Iam 41 and find the likes of Topshop,DP's stuff looks cheap on me. Have a few dresses from French Connection, but cannot fathom Gap tbh. Went in there in Chester on tuesday and was just white t shirts and beige linen trousers.

I still say Top shop has the odd good thing whatever your age. I've been looking for 'mac with hood that doesn't look fogeyish' and found this yesterday www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?top=Y&langId=-1&storeId=12556&catalogId=19 551&categoryId=42347&beginIndex=20&viewAllFlag=false
Looks good on and is relatively interesting.

florenceuk · 22/05/2008 14:14

The other day I wore an old shapeless fleece and was WARM without having to put on my down parka, which was the main aim.

I think Rosa you are shopping in the same places as us other WOACAs, but you may want to try H&M for cheap summer tops (I bought two of their cotton blouses the other day for about £8 I think). I also like Jigsaw, and I am currently wearing a rather brilliant pair of trousers by Reiss which are lightweight wool and therefore cool but not wrinkly (good for work). Gap is good for basics but I wish they'd brighten up their colour palette.

Thank you one and all ladies. I've decided I know what the problem is thanks to this thread - I know where to get the clothes I would like to wear - I just can't afford them at the moment!

I'm 41 and find many of my brethren in White Stuff. Kew is a bit of trek for me. Jigsaw seems a bit work orientated for a SAHM. Bit bored of Monsoon as wore in my thirties. Per Una and Autograph can have some gems but so much crap to wade through. Hate, hate, hate cheap fabrics badly sewn together. I recently bought some vests from Top Shop and they were crap and the same price as M&S.

John Lewis is same trek for me as Kew so go rarely but we have a House of Fraser. From there Linea, Phase Eight and Fenn Wright and Manson are promising.

Oska is for giants. Lovely clothes but no good on 5'2 1/2".

The other brand I really like is Sandwich.

My older sister finds good stuff in H&M but I can never find it.

margoandjerry · 22/05/2008 15:28

Have looked at white stuff and realise you are not only all WOACA but you also all have legs. That you can show to people.

All their skirts and dresses are knee length and unless I want to look like a giant overgrown Tinytears doll, I do not do legs on show.

I have, however, put a couple of items in my basket for later consideration.

Re Jaeger, I have some of the most lovely things in my wardrobe from Jaeger. A seriously lovely cherry print silk blouse with glass cherry beads at the cuffs. It's gorgeous (Katie Derham has one, I notice!). But I got it in the sale in a very provincial, fusty dusty Jaeger branch where they obviously didn't appreciate the gorgeousness and therefore it was about £40 rather than the original price of more like £180 . They have gone quite fashion-forward lately - but also way beyond my budget.

MargaretMountford · 22/05/2008 16:11

margoandjerry - I prefer longer skirts because of horrid thread veins - legs nice shape but feel embarrassed by veins when bared
