Is this too casual for a 'semi formal' wedding?

I am not a very stylish person so would appreciate honest opinions. Can I wear this dress to my brother's wedding? It is cotton and quite simple style so I'm wondering if it's too casual.

It looks comfy though and I do prefer simple. Just wondering if I will look like I've dressed for a barbecue..

OP, I have this dress. It's absolutely beautiful and very suitable for a wedding, semi-formal or otherwise. For those wondering, it's a heavier jersey that sits and hangs beautifully. It's very flattering. I'm wearing mine to my son's graduation in July. I've got this black bolero to wear with mine:

I'll wear either cream wedge sandals (no tights) or black wedge shoes (with tights) with it, possibly depending on the weather on the day. I haven't decided on a bag yet but will go for either black or cream. To me, it looks better without a belt.

I would go for it. Good luck deciding!

I think it is very nice but if you want something with less white, this one is great but may be too expensive.

Now that is work wear. It's exactly the sort of dress that appears for meetings with important clients, marketing events or other external presentations. It's a very nice dress.

Oldshaft · 24/05/2025 17:59

Looks good to me, but don't forget the stockings & suspenders

TizerorFizz · 25/05/2025 03:03

@TheProvincialLady Dear me! Never seen that.

TizerorFizz · 25/05/2025 03:14

@ChandrilanDiscoDroid She has impeccable taste for weddings. I assume you don’t know who the others are. The Queen of Spain is wearing Massimo Dutti. Also Ascot chic is a very good look for a more formal wedding and all those dresses are suitable for a semi formal wedding. Many women simply cannot wear catwalk fashion and the op would probably not be interested if she likes this cotton jersey dress. We are not all going to wear little strappy summer dresses or short bubble skirts. The pragmatic look is to accessorize with black and add good jewellery.

Arcticbeer · 30/05/2025 10:49

This is what it looks like on me. It is very comfortable and the fabric feels 'nice' to me. It is soft stretch cotton but it doesn't feel like a t-shirt. It looks OK, right?

I think I'm going to go for it and get a black belt for it and probably some kind of bolero jacket / shrug thing (also black?) but what style of flat shoes would look best? I am not good at this kind of thing so would appreciate any tips.

Oh, I thought it was OK if it was patterned Confused

Back to the drawing board then. Is that sort of style all right if I find something similar in a different colour?

It’s great! Don’t let one poster put you off.

DappledThings · 30/05/2025 11:13

It looks great on you. Not sure about a belt. I think if it isn't designed for a belt then it might make it ride up a bit. It definitely doesn't need anything else with it if you don't want anything else.

notnowmrshudson · 30/05/2025 12:20

I think it's great x

Oohoohpickme · 30/05/2025 12:42

It looks great. I wouldn’t belt it. If I was looking for flat shoes (which I wouldn’t because I’m a midget so would want heels with that), I’d go for ballet flats. I would personally wear a hat, but I really like hats and a wedding is a good excuse.

Jeezitneverends · 30/05/2025 12:43

I think it’s lovely-and looks great on you . I wouldn’t add a belt though-that would make it a bit frumpy.
I don’t know if shoes like this might work?

I also think it's lovely and doesn't need a belt.

UnderTheCover · 30/05/2025 13:08

It's perfect

No belt.

I would wear a pointed ballerina flat. There's a large selection here. You might have to search "pointed" Even black would be ok as they're so, for want of a better word, dainty. There's a couple in the other links but there's loads. They're extremely comfortable.

You look great.

Arcticbeer · 30/05/2025 19:19

You are all so helpful, thank you!!

These are some options that I would be able to try on in a shoe shop near me (I don't like buying shoes without trying them on and seeing them in person and hate the rigmarole of returns). Any of these stand out (in a good way or a bad way?

Mostly from Vagabond, which I think is the nicest brand available locally.

Probably b or c or a or e because they are patent/ partly patent.

Gosh that bolero looks really good with your dress. I wouldn't have looked twice at it the way Hobbs styled it. What a difference.

Pinkissmart · 30/05/2025 23:28

SheridansPortSalut · 24/05/2025 08:49

It's a no fro me.
Don't wear white.
It's your brother's wedding. You'll be in the photos. The white will stand out more in the photos and will be there for posterity.
Pick any other colour. Literally any other colour. There's just one colour that's off bounds.

Except it's not completely white?

Thank you. Yes, I feel it really "elevates" the dress.

LogicalBlodge · 31/05/2025 00:14

I like it. I also think it has good wearability - depending on how you accessorise could be worn again/look different.
