Nobody told me about the double cleanse!

Saw it recommended on insta a couple of weeks ago. So now my evening facewash has been replaced with a cream cleanser and then a micellar water cleanse. Skin is loving it!! Highly recommend

Double cleanse when washing hair with shampoo too!

So what do you use

I recall it was normal to wash your hair twice using shampoo twice growing up. I think it was in my twenties when I stopped doing this, but then conditioners seemed more common. Don’t really recall using conditioners growing up.

Double cleanse isn't shampooing twice, which is also pointless

WingBingo · 17/05/2025 22:58

I didn’t realise Micellar water wasn’t getting it all off until I got a sample of Estee Lauder cleanser. I used it after Micellar water and a lot more make up came off.

Then I wash with soap. At 50 my skin has never been better.

OneFineDay13 · 17/05/2025 23:08

@WellINeverrr - don't worry it's not. Double cleanse on the face is quite a new thing and I bet loads of women don't know this

greengreyblue · 17/05/2025 23:09

Another gimmick. Cleanse until the cotton wool is clean. That’s common sense.

GauntJudy · 17/05/2025 23:20

Before double cleansing I'd use a face wash and eye make up remover. Maybe shifting to a cream cleanser has suited my skin too. I'm seeing good results so I don't feel like it's a cynical gimmick.

Lidl cleansing milk followed by witch hazel. Always got clear skin.

I love the smell of witch hazel. Haven't used it for ages. This post has reminded me to buy some.

I'm in my 60s and have never double cleansed. For decades I've used a wash off cleanser with cloth and it gets everything off, I use a separate eye makeup remover first. When I heard about double cleansing a couple of years ago I bought a balm cleanser and used that first, what a palaver, didn't make a blind bit of difference. A good serum and moisturiser is what makes a difference to my skin.
Double cleansing is simply a marketing ploy to make you use more products. It's the same as washing your hair twice, waste of time and money.

Agree. I use whatever soap I have to hand (boots through to Clinique if gifted at xmas). I moisturise if I remember and/or can be bothered. The end.

What a palaver to ‘double cleanse’ … and a total marketing scam.

Heidi2018 · 18/05/2025 00:18

I was at a talk before by a skin expert. They recommend double cleansing but said just water one of the times is perfectly fine, no need to buy two cleansers.

I also shampoo my hair twice as I use a lot of product between washes so feel like the first one removes the product and grime, the second one actually cleans.

ShyTealBiscuit · 18/05/2025 00:18

I use cleansing balm to take off my make up, then a face wash in the shower (always shower in the evening rather than the morning). I used to just use the face wash but have definitely seen an improvement in my skin since adding in the cleansing balm. Plus the cleansing balm melts makeup off so it's much more efficient, I always used to have panda eyes after the shower.

This is basically what cleanser and toner did but it fell out of fashion. Now it’s called double cleansing. Take your makeup off and rinse with water is basically the same thing as a pp said.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 18/05/2025 08:00

I don't wear makeup so a single cleanse is fine for me. Most of the time I just use micellar water then toner but I'll add a cleanser with glycolic acid to exfoliate a couple of times a week - generally after I've been to London as my skin is always a bit grubbier on those days.

in your experience and your opinion it doesn’t make a difference; sample of one! 🤣

CuriousKangaroo · 18/05/2025 09:16

I use an oil cleanser first to clean off make up and sunscreen etc, and then use a face wash. I agree, it makes a huge difference.

Which oil cleanser and how do you use it? I use face wash only most of the time, cleanser when I wear make up. That's it. I would have no idea how to use an oil cleanser.

abracadabra1980 · 18/05/2025 09:20

Is this the new expression sales patter for cleanse, tone and moisturise?

DiscoBeat · 18/05/2025 09:22

I use micellar water then hot cloth cleanser. Does that count as a double cleanse? I like to finish with hot water as it feels so much fresher.

I use the Mac one. I use a couple of pumps and massage it over dry skin, including my eyes as it takes off eye make up too, then massage in water which creates a sort of creamy texture, then I wash it off.

Second cleanse can be any face wash that you like to use.

Double cleansing has been around for years and years. And for lots of people, including me, it has made a big difference.

Shouldn't you use the micellar water first to remove makeup and then cream cleaner to properly clean your skin?

Yes

No. Micellar water should always be washed of. Hot water is drying your skin.

Cleanser and toner aren't out of fashion. They are both very popular and used by many. Double cleansing is basically taking your make up and SPF off with a cleanser (usually oil based) and then washing with a face wash or water based cleanser. You can then follow on with toner, serum, moisturiser or whatever other skincare you want.

It's just a way that some people prefer to clean their face. Like I said, I like it because I find it more efficient and I've seen an improvement in my skin since I started doing it. Oil based cleanser leaves my skin greasy so I need to wash it after, and just using face wash alone doesn't get rid of all my makeup.

You could uplevel your skincare routine even further with a face cleansing device. I use one from a brand called Beautifect and my face has never been cleaner, I also have their bamboo cloths and korean pads and my skin is so clear!

Well, no, not really. A cleanse should not require another cleanse for it to be effective.

incorrect.

First cleanse to remove makeup, spf and surface dirt of the day.

Second cleanse to properly and deeply cleanse the actual skin.

Standard advice from any skincare professional for night time routine.

Gundogday · 20/05/2025 13:35

I was trying to work out whether people use a toner after double cleansing so I guess the answer is no.
