I hate my hair so much it’s getting me down

I have wavy, frizzy, puffy, awful hair. I’m about 25% grey which makes the texture even worse.

I have tried every “curly girl” routine but my hair isn’t really curly enough for this to work well. It just ends up looking greasy or crunchy or flat, and diffusing it takes hours I don’t have. I have poured so much money down the drain on products that don’t do what I need.

My child was born just over a year ago and the postpartum hair loss was bad. It’s growing back well but I have a ton of short hairs and a sort of frizzy “halo” effect, on top of the awful hair texture.

I don’t have time in the mornings anymore for a lengthy styling routine so I tend to just straighten it but i’m starting to get heat damage even with heat protection products.

Today I had to go to the office with slightly dirty hair and so I just put it in a ponytail and used hair spray and a bit of hair paste to make it look smooth and tame the flyaways - within a few hours it was looking frizzy and shit and like I don’t even own a brush.

I look at my friends and colleagues and other moms at daycare pick-up who have naturally straight and shiny hair or properly curly hair and I want to cry. I feel like I look like an unprofessional ugly dishevelled mess.

I fantasise about cutting it all off but I’m broad shouldered and fat and nothing like a pixie. I would just end up looking like a cancer patient or a stereotype of a butch lesbian.

Does anyone have this kind of awful hair texture? Have you found any products or routines that work? I’m in South Africa but I would still appreciate any recommendations. Or commiseration.

Morning, i hear you, i have the most shite hair at times!! It's type 2a, B and sometimes a wee 2c at sections! It's fine, but lots, I'm taking biotin and I've got sticking up areas with new growth which is neither straight or textured it's just weird 😅
I don't use the CG method, I use Umberto Gianni products, shampoo and conditioner or Goldwell. I always dry my hair at night, then put in a high bun loosely, at the moment because of sticky up hair when I wear it like that in the day I have to Kirby the front 🙃
I really don't know what to suggest I'm sorry xx

Thank you! It’s nice to know there are others with the same problem!

My recommendation isn’t cheap but I want to give it anyhow. I’ve frizzy hair too which is getting worse with age. I’ve tried the curly routine and concluded it isn’t wavy or uniform enough to work properly and to stick. The other challenge is humidity so rain and holidays are a nightmare.

Someone bought me a Dyson air straightener you can use on dry or wet hair without the damage that straighteners cause and it is fantastic. No more frizz ever and it’s so fast.

Dyson have places in shopping centres and big shops that allow you to try the first with someone to show you how they work. That will give you an option to try it out first. I’m not even using products at this point.

I have also the Dyson for curly hair and don’t recommend that. It’s a faff.

I've ended up straightening it tonight, I do need a new diffuser and hair dryer though, it blows my hair too much.

I have exactly this hair. I am older and greyer (almost white all over) than you too. I’ve given up really. However it’s been suggested to me recently that its poor condition might be linked to low ferritin levels.

CatchHimDerry · 09/05/2025 21:03

No advice OP, as I too am at a loss with completely shit hair, but understand how you’re feeling

DefinitelyMaybe92 · 09/05/2025 21:06

I have 3b curls, but I do also straighten it to create looser curls/waves when I feel like it. Can you straighten it? What about heatless curls?

edit: also Color Wow do a humidity blocker spray which you might find works for you. Have a look at some demos/reviews.

I wash and dry it at night. Have tried curly girl stuff and leaving to air dry. It looks absolutely shit and takes hours and hours to dry. I have no idea how people can go out and about if leave to air dry.

I just have to blow dry it like a hairdresser. Stretch it straight as I dry at sometimes use straighteners. Then sleep with it tied up. Cheap shampoo and conditioner, frizz ease type cream and heat protection. It still looks shit on holiday though when it's above 30 odd degrees and humid.

i am similar in having v little time to get ready in morning and can’t be arsed with all that curly girl nonsense. Went to a curly specialist hairdresser and got some recommendations for good value products that work for my particular hair - aunt Jackie’s hair cleanser instead of shampoo. Any decent conditioner. Curlsmith air dry cream which I chuck on my wet hair, comb with Afro comb, then tigi catwalk curls to finish. Super quick and easy and I feel presentable!

Hair Botox has worked miracles for me. I had it done in a salon, I don’t know the name of it but it was chemical free. It’s not cheap (£150) but lasts 6 months. It’s the best thing I have ever had done to my hair.
