Wide leather sandals, leather inner, walkable but stylish

Does anyone have any tips for nice sandals with an adjustable front, or come in wide fittings?
There used to be a few just bearable Hotter styles but they’re so frumpy now and also, the inner is “textile” - changed a few years ago - it’s a beige fabric that looks like nubuck in photos but it’s cheap material over plastic that wears poorly.
Clarks I like but I can’t find anything nice right now in a wide fitting or adjustable.
i want an alright looking sandal, maybe with a bit of a wedge, that I can wear on a city break without sore feet but feeling a bit more elegant than I do in my tevas.

thanks in advance

I have the FitFlop Gracie - I have wide feet at the front and narrow ankles so often wide fitting shoes are too loose there! Can't win, but the Gracies are great. Expensive but OK the second summer after a fair bit of wear last year and they look good as new.

I absolutely love the saltwaters with the thick sole - you can swim in them and shove them in the washing machine. They are so comfy and come in some lovely colours. https://www.salt-watersandals.co.uk/collections/womens-sandals/products/boardwalk-tan-womens-sandal

Alternatively I’ve got some Birkenstocks which I love (gold Arizonas)

Do they have good grip on the sole? I have the flatter saltwaters and they are lethal. No grip so the minute you hit a smooth surface you go flying.

I usually wear Birkenstocks - the most comfortable sandals I’ve found, although definitely not the prettiest. Watching this thread with interest

Christwosheds · 09/05/2025 12:09

I can’t wear Birkenstocks as the footbed isn’t wide enough. I have feet that are wide bone-wise, so slimmer at the heel, (rather than feet that have widened due to being a bit chubby) so formed footbeds where the edges are raised often hurt my feet at the widest point where toes meet foot bones. My feet also swell in the heat, so sandals are a perennial nightmare, I’ve had so many that seem fine but hurt when I walk any distance in them. Years ago in my 20s I had a pair from Sundaes who used to make simple sandals to order in different fittings. I have a pair of G fitting wedges from Gabor that are really comfortable but I would like a lower heeled version. Clarks seem to do far fewer sandals in a wide fitting now. I’ve spent the last few Summers with no sandals at all , so I’m hoping to find something on this thread ! Iike Saltwater uppers but the soles are too flat for me.

I've recently bought Pikolinos and they are so comfortable and have an adjustable strap, I've got wide feet.

I've been in mine all week, I walk at least 4 miles round my classroom every day, and they are so pretty too.

Another one here to recommend saltwater sandals. The ‘swimmer’ style has more padding than the other ones and I’ve worn them for city break after city break in the summer- they don’t smell and they’re sooo comfy. They are also waterproof! https://www.salt-watersandals.co.uk/collections/womens-sandals/products/boardwalk-tan-womens-sandal

I have just bought these. They are really soft and comfortable.

I hope so - I’ve just ordered the chestnut ones after seeing this!

kazzakon · 09/05/2025 22:32

Air & grace! I used to wear saltwaters religiously for their adjustable straps but air and grace are far superior, really good sturdy soles, I walk miles in mine! Adjustable straps also which work well for my super wide feet which swell up in the heat..

Range not massive but their Gala Two Bar Back Strap Sandals are a winner!

comfyslippers2 · 10/05/2025 15:07

I have these Fitflop Lulu in 3 colours, tan, rose gold & black - they are so good - spectacularly comfortable & have a bit of height.

They are all kinds of adjustable with various buckle width settings on front & top straps and hidden elastic in the back straps. Oh and all of the straps have got really thick plush soft padding on the inside. They can be worn for serious hiking & city walking & I absolutely love them.

Only downside is you mentioned leather inners but these are the micro wobble board with loads of cushioning and superb arch support.

A lot of people recommend the Fitflop Gracie’s which are also lovely and are suitable for evenings or light walking/shopping etc. & are daintier but the Lulu’s are so much more comfortable and supportive.

I never find fit flop very wide I have to say. With sandals I generally revert to salt waters which sometimes feel a bit tight but expand and they do an adjustable version. Not very glam though I suppose.

I may have lost the plot as I would never buy moshulu normally - but I’m tempted by these!

Thank you very much for the tip and also to the OP for asking the question, as those were also my criteria.

I hotfooted it down to my nearest Moshulu branch and the funky pink and orange ones ticked all the boxes for comfort and style. They looked and felt immediately right. And 20% off at the moment.

chalkyc2 · 11/05/2025 06:18

Ooh don’t tempt me @LoveHeartsFan!! Are they true to size?

LoveHeartsFan · 11/05/2025 10:53

@chalkyc2 I would say that these ones are quite generously sized - as they don’t do half sizes in this style.

I’m normally 5.5, but the 5 fitted me perfectly and still had plenty of room. So I’d say size down rather than up. The style suits me with supportive arches and a contour for toe grip and I really like the soft leather straps and leather footbed, which I always look for but seems to be increasingly difficult to find. Slightly heavier than I normally go for, but well-cushioned and flexible.

(I hate the suede or suede textile that seems to be popular now/the cheaper option for manufacturers - it’s fine up to a point, but then, as you walk around on a hot day, and your feet swell, it starts to chafe the bottom of your feet.)

This is a similar style but running slightly smaller and narrower, lighter and with a thinner sole. I’d say that was closer to a 5 but plenty of room for a 5.5.

I also liked these, but the middle strap felt narrow for my feet - without it they would probably have been perfect and I might have got them as well!

DM sandals - Voss style OMG soooo comfortable, trendy and go with everything
So unlike DMs , put them on and straight away and no rubbing, pinching or breaking in. Most comfortable sandals I’ve had and I’ve gone through loads over the decades

Oh no has the hotter tourist style changed then. Gutted!

I'm looking too - time to replace my old Hotter tourists which though a bit frumpy did meet all the OP criteria well.

Newstartplease24 · 12/05/2025 09:08

thanks for all the suggestions. I wasnt really looking to spend over £100 but it’s tempting if they’re good. I liked some of the esska range but the reviews say they fell apart. I don’t want to spend that kind of money on disposables.
it looks
as if there are nice options if you’re prepared to pay but I wish there was some way of knowing in advance the exact measurements and if they are just going to fall apart.
spent a long time thinking about saltwater which I have done on and off for many years. I always eventually decide against them as they don’t look that wide: they are “fake wide” in that they have a wide foot bed but the front straps are set several mm inside them and I bet they would bite my toes. I don’t really want the look of having big wide feet and still getting pinched - worst of both worlds

im trying a couple of the least dorky Moshulu and will report back

Have you tried Next? You can filter by material and fit, they have over 150 options for wide fit, leather sandals. Not sure what the quality is like but there’s a decent range and some budget and some splurge options.

The Clark’s Alda Strap is very comfy, and comes in wide fitting. I just wish I’d got it in tan last year, unfortunately it’s only in black or white now.

Edited

It's back strap caused a blister.

I love the look of these but I’m unsure what size to order… did you find they came up long as well as wide? I’m usually a 6 but occasionally a 5… I’m overseas so I don’t want to have to return!

Riverswimmers · 01/06/2025 11:35

I'm still on the hunt. I ordered new Hotter Tourist sandals in Wide and Extra wide to replace my 4 year old pair. Both have a much narrower footbed than the pair I already have (about 5-10mm). The xwide just has more leather so they are loose but too narrow.

Bizzare that they have narrowed the style. I'm at a bit of a loss now.
