Should men wear something under a shirt?

Quite a few men at work wear suits, and you can see their nips through them. Is this fine in a work setting? I imagine it’ll be because the shirts are cheaper or lighter now that it’s getting hot, and vests are seen as a grandad thing by some, but what are your thoughts on it?

I don't stare at men to notice OP. Who cares?

I'm not keen on the look of a vest under a shirt, it seems such an old man thing to wear. Bearing in mind my Dad is in his mid 80's and he wouldn't wear one - I'm talking more about my Grandads generation (and he died in the 80's).

Your question has made me realise that what I actually dislike, is cheap see through shirts. They are equally vile whether a vest is worn underneath or not.

I'm also equal opportunities on this, I don't want to be able to see women's underwear through their work tops either.

Most of them are wearing jumpers and jackets today, because it's freezing.

Literally didn’t think any man under the age of about 90 wears anything under a formal shirt.

I’m retired now, but in all my working life I don’t remember ever noticing whether any of the men I worked with wore vests. Neither do I remember ever seeing their nipples.

My husband (in his 70s) never wore one. My father (dead but would be nearly 100) always did. I agree that, in this country at least, it is very much an old man thing.

I’m interested to see so many people referring to “dress shirts” when presumably they mean normal smart work shirts. I would only use the term “dress shirt” to describe the sort of shirt that would be worn under a dinner jacket.

This is exactly what I was about to say. I've never heard anyone call an everyday shirt a dress shirt until this thread.

But vests don't have fabric under the arms - that was my point.

FFS. They do, because the fabric comes up underneath the arms to form the armhole of the vest. I'm wearing one now that is going over my breasts and then underneath my arms. It just doesn't extend over the arms, because then it would be a t-shirt.
Therefore that bit of fabric will absorb some of the sweat, which is my point.
The vest gets sweaty and it takes longer before the shirt looks manky.

This is why some people, including me, like to wear a vest under a work shirt.
You do you.

Melancholyflower · 06/05/2025 23:22

Anyway, I wouldn't expect any man to wear a shirt for more than one day.

EconomyClassRockstar · 06/05/2025 23:33

DH has as big a collection of plain white t-shirts as he does shirts because it helps with the hot, sweaty summer mess vs AC issue instead of a nipple issue. No-one wants sweat stains on their shirts!

Yes all the Americans I work with wear a t-shirt or vest. I always think it’s a bit naff.

Anyone over the age of 5 really doesn't need a t-shirt/vest under a shirt unless it's super cold. It is naff.

Under the age of 4 surely 😀!

Many of us have spent years saying there is no big deal about women’s nipples. At times it almost appeared that we were getting somewhere. And then people come along and start making a fuss about men’s nipples. 😱

My husband always wears a t-shirt under his shirts, but I didn't think it was the norm. I know I'd get some side eye if you could see my bra through my shirt at work or maybe even called in to talk to the head (secondary school). Doesn't stop some of the kids rolling their skirts up to past knicker length 🤢, but hey ho

In American shows they are always wearing T-shirts under their shirts and I do wonder whether that's a thing there as here I don't see it. But I can't say I have seen many see through shirts in the office in the UK. James Dean caused a stir when he wore a T-shirt (underwear!) on the outside but I think we might be passed that now.

Most definitely a thing in America. I find it attractive and definitely more hygienic in hot climates.

TuesdaysAreBest · 08/05/2025 08:27

A T-shirt, that is, not a vest, to be clear is standard in the USA for business dressing.

Topseyt123 · 08/05/2025 08:41

Nobody should have to wear vests (or t-shirts) under a shirt or blouse if they don't want to. That's old fashioned nonsense.

I'm not a fan of slips/petticoats/underskirts either. I remember having to wear some as a child but was glad to discard them from my teenage years onwards. They belong in the bin.
