Should men wear something under a shirt?

Quite a few men at work wear suits, and you can see their nips through them. Is this fine in a work setting? I imagine it’ll be because the shirts are cheaper or lighter now that it’s getting hot, and vests are seen as a grandad thing by some, but what are your thoughts on it?

The american 'undershirt' is probably due to their freezing office air-con.
I dont think a shirt needs a vest or t-shirt under, especially on a warm day in the UK in a too-warm office.
People should be comfortable at work (as should kids in school - blazers and jumpers are ridiculous summer-wear).

It's to keep the dress shirts from being ruined by sweat, especially in hot weather, but you need something to keep you warm in winter too.

Indoor temps are not the problem. Getting to your office with your shirt stuck to you isn't great, and this will happen in 99% of American cities where people tend to use public transport to get to work.

You'd be seen as extremely underdressed as a man in an American workplace if you showed up without an undershirt.

LiveshipParagon · 05/05/2025 22:26

Surely wearing an extra layer makes you warmer and therefore more likely to be sweaty, though? I can't make sense of that argument at all.

Hoppinggreen · 05/05/2025 22:29

Vests on men give me The Ick

The fabric under the arms absorbs some of that sweat so it's not as bad. I was also thinking of sweat marks on the back.

But vests don't have fabric under the arms - that was my point.

FloatingSquirrel · 05/05/2025 23:28

I'd rather see nipples than sweaty men in multiple layers!

coxesorangepippin · 06/05/2025 01:25

I think I'd prefer a T-shirt underneath

Just to be sure

Tbrh · 06/05/2025 02:28

Wow I've never seen someone's nipples through a shirt, Gosh that really does say something about the quality of the clothes being made!

No, the cotton t-shirt absorbs the sweat and spares the shirt.

EBearhug · 06/05/2025 02:41

Quite a few of my former colleagues wore a t-shirt under a shirt, if it was a day to dress up, but by no means all. Mostly it was a jeans and t-shirt sort of place.

I honestly couldn't tell you what most of my male colleagues in my new job wear. I think it's mostly polo shirts. One guy does have the most beautifully pressed t-shirts, though. I almost want to ask him about his laundry routines...

I am going to be staring at them all in the office now.

But I think the fact I haven't noticed means it doesn't really matter (to me). And also, there's a lack of fanciable men in my current workplace, else I probably would have paid more attention.

DrJump · 06/05/2025 02:56

I wear t-shirts under shirts in winter. It means I can wear my shirts twice without washing and ironing them.

I'm honestly starting to think about getting a bunch of slips to go under my work dresses too.

TheHerboriste · 06/05/2025 03:18

Yes, decently groomed men wear a thin vest under dress shirts.

StarlightLady · 06/05/2025 06:49

It’s bad enough that women’s nipples have been demonised and considered evil. The last thing society needs to do is extend it to men. This outlook is certainly is not a road to equality.

We all have nipples and neither on a man or a woman should this be a big deal.

But without the t-shirt you will be cooler and may not sweat at all...

StMarie4me · 06/05/2025 07:48

Why would nipples be inappropriate at work?! I’ve been I workplaces for 47 years and have never found this offensive/ inappropriate/ uncomfortable!

BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2025 07:50

GreenFressia · 05/05/2025 19:37

I'm comfortable with seeing a man's nipple 😁

Hussy! 😂

I’m a big fan of the slip. I think it makes a lot of dresses sit better and, as someone who works in a freezing office I appreciate the extra layer. Do it!

saraclara · 06/05/2025 07:52

It's a very old man thing. I'm 69 and doing know any men my age who wear a vest. I associate it with the 80+ age group.

merrymelody · 06/05/2025 08:04

North American men (who wear suits, a button down shirt and a tie) usually wear a short sleeved white T-shirt underneath the dress shirt to keep it from getting sweaty. Or to keep warm.

TheOGCCL · 06/05/2025 08:31

I agree this seems a very old fashioned look but only if you can see through the shirt which you shouldn’t be able to with something good quality.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/05/2025 08:41

I think a lot of shirts are very thin now, a lot thinner than the ones people would buy now. Men would wear vests. I think if a shirt is shoeing their nips then they should wear a sleveless vest of some kind. You can get cooling ones.

Blobbitymacblob · 06/05/2025 08:57

The quality of clothes has plummeted since Covid; everything is cheaper, thinner and horribly synthetic. Shirts are barely there now.

In American shows they are always wearing T-shirts under their shirts and I do wonder whether that's a thing there as here I don't see it. But I can't say I have seen many see through shirts in the office in the UK. James Dean caused a stir when he wore a T-shirt (underwear!) on the outside but I think we might be passed that now.

An acquaintance went to live and work in the US and was asked to wear a t shirt under his shirt in the office. Having spent over 40 years in an office with mostly men I tend to agree.
I never like seeing their sweat stains under the arm pits and chest hair peeking out of their shirt.

dudsville · 06/05/2025 09:08

I don't think they should, but it's similar to wearing a slip under a dress in that it makes it look nicer.

But most of us aren’t living in the US so it’s completely irrelevant. It’s absolutely fine for the UK.

Maddy70 · 06/05/2025 09:33

Are you seriously suggesting they should go back to wearing vests? What's wrong with nipples?
