Where could I wear this gingham short suit?

Pretty much in the title :)

I've lost 5st and am excited to be branching out and trying new clothes but not quite found my feet yet after years of just trying to hide myself. Lacking in a bit of confidence in what kind of outfit works for when...

I love this blazer and shorts set, and I could see them both being used as seperates. But where could I wear them together as an outfit?

Where could I wear this gingham short suit?

Dinner? A day out to a museum? Where do you usually go?

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 05/05/2025 11:58

A Clueless themed fancy dress party?

I actually think it looks great on the model but at 40ish myself I don't think I attend the kind of places where this would be the go to kind of outfit. I can see it being casual wear for the youngsters though.

Britpopbaby · 05/05/2025 12:01

Out and about when sunny.

Rocknrollstar · 05/05/2025 12:05

Loads of people wearing this sort of outfit on the underground in London - going sightseeing, to a museum, out for lunch.Wherever.

olivelime · 05/05/2025 12:05

Lolz, it is giving clueless vibes, as my DD would say!

I'm 40ish myself too. I'd like to think we can still wear fun fashion but not sure I have the places to wear it. I know I'd look like a plonker on the school run in it.

@Overtheatlantic date night is probably the closest isn't it?

Day out with friends - shopping, gallery etc. Out for dinner or around a friends for a BBQ.

latetothefisting · 05/05/2025 12:35

It's not that I don't like the outfit, and I know lots of people are wearing them to the places pp's have said - and I agree it's suitable in terms of style for lots of them...but for me I only wear shorts when it's properly hot outside, and when it's that hot the last thing I want to be wearing on top is a full on thick jacket as well as a cami/t shirt. It looks like your top half is dressed for winter and your bottom half for summer! I can't imagine many temperatures when it will be sunny enough to not be freezing your arse off in shorts but where you won't be boiling in a jacket.

Sherararara · 05/05/2025 12:38

The beach obviously.

Weekmindedfool · 05/05/2025 12:43

In the changing room shortly before putting it back on the rack.

Honestly if I ever saw someone wearing something like this it just screams “trying too hard”.
“Look at me, aren’t I cool and stylish?”
“No”.

Hoppinggreen · 05/05/2025 12:45

IF its cool enough to need a jacket won't your legs be too cold?

Overtheatlantic · 05/05/2025 12:49

I would buy the blazer and forget the shorts, but then I’m not a shorts person.

oddandelsewhere · 05/05/2025 12:54

It also probably depends on what you actually weigh now. While losing 5 stone is impressive, if you're still overweight or a bit flabby then the shorts will look awful.(And embarrassing)

emmatherhino · 05/05/2025 13:07

Anywhere!

Im a size 20-22 and 40, and I'd wear that to the pub, out for the day, school run...it would be a normal part of my wardrobe on a spring or summer day. I'd probably end up taking off the blazer mid morning because I'd be too warm, but the outfit is lush!

BaronessBomburst · 05/05/2025 13:10

I'm another one who doesn't understand shorts (warm day) with a jacket (cool day).

Wow.
What a delightful way of speaking to somebody.

True though. It’s an outfit for long legs. Short and stumpy won’t cut it.

Aizen · 05/05/2025 13:31

Looks great on the model. I wouldn't think it's all that practical though for most things. If you have to rack your our brains to think of where you could wear it, I'd leave it out and get something you KNOW you love and can wear to different things.

Shorts and tee shirt combos would be great in Summer, there are some lovely ranges of shorts now, short, mid, knee length, close and loose fitting. Mix and match is a bit more practical I think.

You can be overweight and have long legs...I'm size 20 and have 34 inch legs.

MoominMai · 05/05/2025 14:28

Tbh I see them as really only working for a slimmer taller figure. Also to me anyway that combo would really only ever work in a casual fitting. So would look better with flats or trainers really. I think it could work on any age but just feels it’s restrictive as not something that can be dressed up or down. Me personally I don’t like it. Feels too dressy to be properly casual also but not dressy enough to be properly formal because of the shorts! 😅

InMyOpenOnion · 05/05/2025 14:35

Congratulations on your weight loss OP, that's a fantastic achievement. I think that outfit is quite a tricky one to integrate into your wardrobe. As PP have said, if it's warm enough for shorts you almost certainly won't need the jacket. They are also quite short shorts, which to me says casual but then you'd probably pair them with a casual top as opposed to the jacket.

HumptyNumptyDumpty · 05/05/2025 14:41

I’d wear that to the pub!

It would work better with black tights. Opaque, sheer or fishnet. And as to where you would wear, well just about anywhere you "go out" to.

Overweight, flabby, stumpy.

It's not my thing as I don't wear shorts or trousers but I give your post a thumbs up in the face of the sheer negativity and lack of imagination on this thread.

The usual "only suit tall/ thin/ model" brigade are out in force- it's amazing the rag trade hasn't collapsed given that apparently so many clothes are only suitable for tall, thin, 18 year old models.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 05/05/2025 16:51

I remember wearing shorts and a jacket to go out in, in the 1980s. Sleeves rolled up on the jacket and white stilettos !
