Where could I wear this gingham short suit?

Pretty much in the title :)

I've lost 5st and am excited to be branching out and trying new clothes but not quite found my feet yet after years of just trying to hide myself. Lacking in a bit of confidence in what kind of outfit works for when...

I love this blazer and shorts set, and I could see them both being used as seperates. But where could I wear them together as an outfit?

Where could I wear this gingham short suit?

I remember wearing shorts and a jacket to go out in, in the 1980s. Sleeves rolled up on the jacket and white stilettos !

It was the favourite look of one of my son's girlfriends around 2017- 2020. Usually with black tights. She must have been all of 5'0- she looked great in them.

If you like it, you like it. I think it's a summer outfit for a warmish not hot holiday / weekend. I'm 51 and my favourite summer outfit is a pink candy striped sleeveless cotton minidress. I live in it on a hot day and DNGAF if it's not age/size appropriate.

I often wear a jacket or jumper with shorts / short skirt. Weather can be really variable through the day June-Aug so having something to throw on top is useful and also I tend to feel the cold up top rather than on my legs. Plus it makes the outfit a lot smarter.

Oh my gosh yes, I had white stilettos. I couldn't afford leather ones so they were some sort of awful plastic!

It would work better with black tights. Opaque, sheer or fishnet. And as to where you would wear, well just about anywhere you "go out" to.

Shorts over tights isn't a look I've seen in the last 20 years!

and fishnet tights with check print is at best over-patterned and at worst veering into 80s punk

GeorgianaM · 05/05/2025 19:06

The jacket is too big and boxy, can you alter it to make it cropped?

GotToWearShades · 05/05/2025 19:16

I think the shorts look a bit too short for the smartness level of the jacket and like they wouldn't be very comfortable. I used to wear a lot of shorts suits in the Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman style. I'm her sort of height

olivelime · 05/05/2025 19:28

I definitely don't think there's a size limit on wearing shorts. I've been nervous to wear them myself before but I've got several friends who aren't waif thin who look great in them.

I guess I was asking WHERE I could wear the outfit though, not if it was OK for formerly chubby 40 something to give it a go.

And I'm much more likely to be envious of women being ballsy enough to wear what they like rather than thinking they're embarrassing or too big to have their legs out.

The warm top/cold bottom is def an issue. I do like the look of big jumpers and shorts as well though, but that's more beach casual. That's a small window of opportunity weather wise to be fair!

An alternative is shorts plus shirt coord (rather than shorts + blazer). Lots available in gingham and gets round the too warm top half issue.

I bloody love Julia Roberts. And also the thought of fishnets and shorts. I feel like fashion used to me fun for me but then I spent lots of years in back to back pregnancies and raising young kids and ended up wearing a uniform of shapeless colourless outfits.

Well I have - frequently. I'm in an arty, university city.

Fun things - theme park, beach, rounders in the park, funfair.

Idk, I feel like with tights it would make it more versatile, also increase how much of the year you could wear it for.
With opaque tights I'd happily wear it on a school run, shopping, as well as days out or on a date.
(And Joanie always gets a thumbs up from me!)😁

OuterSpaceCadet · 06/05/2025 07:16

I like it and think you could wear it anywhere. Because it's monochrome, black tights would look good (I've seen shorts and tights come back a bit , I live in London). I've also seen ads for Snag tights in skin tone colours which could work well too.

It's not my thing as I don't wear shorts or trousers but I give your post a thumbs up in the face of the sheer negativity and lack of imagination on this thread.

The usual "only suit tall/ thin/ model" brigade are out in force- it's amazing the rag trade hasn't collapsed given that apparently so many clothes are only suitable for tall, thin, 18 year old models.

Exactly.

I wear clothes that I like. If someone thinks I'm too fat/old to wear something, that's their issue.

I wore a short (mid thigh) summer dress this weekend to go to the pub in. I felt cool, comfortable and happy...no fucks given if someone else thinks they're for slim 18 year old.

A summers day where you’ll be out into the evening.

im someone who’s legs do t get cold but would need a jacket when it cools down.

if you love it then buy it and wear it when you want. Congratulations on your weight loss.
