Can anyone recommend good make-up products / tips?

I’m 30 and starting to find my make up sits in my wrinkles / creases

I currently use..
elf primer
nars natural radiant foundation
nars concealer
benefit blush
rimmel bronzer
Lancôme mascara
Mac lipstick

I tried using a setting powder under my eyes but it just looked so dry and sat in my eye bags. Same with the nars concealer and I find the nars foundation looks quite thick and cakey.

I want to try charlotte tilbury products but it’s so expensive to try without knowing if it’ll suit my skin.

I’ve seen really good reviews about the Laura mercier setting powder is it as good at they say?

I’m also wondering if it’s just a self concious thing because I very rarely wear make up I feel a bit out of place wearing it worrying it’s too much or cakey.

I find the normal one good but the Ultra-Blur very cakey. I think it's honestly trial and error with these things as everyone is different, some people love the Ultra-Blur. Don't powder under your eyes though, and do you use concealer under the eyes? The triangle technique? Because that's now fairly old-fashioned.

Jesrob · 04/05/2025 22:31

They do matt ones and a silk ones which are glossier. I have a matt one but put a gloss over because I get quite dry lips. I also bought a Laura mercier lipstick and I really
like that it’s very thin and silky so does wear off pretty quick.

I’m glad that you think that’s funny @PartyPotato - because I was, actually, making a serious point about how women are perceived, and how we perceive ourselves.

But perhaps my posts weren’t shallow enough.

As a woman, I perceive you as a virtue signalling so and so. Off you trot.

OP - mixing my primer with my coverage really helps x

Heparama · 04/05/2025 22:34

The Sculpted by Aimee Hydra Tint is incredible. Light, moisturising and great coverage with no creasing. Also agree about moving to a cream or liquid blush/bronzer.

Darksideofmercury · 04/05/2025 22:35

Is the Elf halo cruelty free does anyone know please? What exactly does it do?

BIWI · 04/05/2025 22:35

Virtue signalling?! Grin

Look - if you’re happy to be denigrated by being called a ‘girlie’ then fill your (no doubt stiletto) boots.

Jesrob · 04/05/2025 22:40

I might order the mini version and try it. I used to conceal under my eyes but stopped when I started with the fine lines. I’m trying to drink more water and have a new skin care routine to see if this improves my skin texture then hopefully make up will sit better.

If you’re happy to be so patronised then be my guest.

Oh, and ‘girl’ is totally different from ‘girlie’. You only have to think about pornographic magazines being described as ‘girlie mags’ to understand the difference.

It’s not stupid @PartyPotato. It’s about having some self worth and self esteem as a woman.

Are you on this thread purely to pick at how OP worded her post title, or do you actually have anything useful to contribute?

Oh so now you’re taking a pop at how women choose to dress?

If you’re trying to make a feminist point here, you’re making a bit of a pig’s ear of it.

I have this issue, now more recently I can say HAD this issue. Elf halo glow is a game changer, it’s not too expensive, depending on how much coverage you like you can either use as a foundation or before your foundation, it leaves you glowing and stops make up rubbing off, going patchy and clinging to creases.

I’ve heard the halo glo is good! Will give it a try

PartyPotato · 04/05/2025 22:51

I’ve got the elf halo glow contour wand, that’s good as well

Lolopolo · 04/05/2025 22:57

I use Elf Halo glow over moisturiser and sunscreen and instead of foundation I use Glossier Stretch concealer where I need it. Most foundations I find age me.

AliBaliBee1234 · 04/05/2025 22:59

I'm a few years older than you and don't have this problem. You're only 30...

I'd focus on hydration and a good moisturising base.

owlexpress · 04/05/2025 22:03

Can you stop derailing the thread please? You're on your own here. Also I'd know FHM etc as 'lads mags' but I digress.

Yes OP, I meant to ask about your skincare routine?

Actually, I do agree with her. I wouldn't have bothered to have commented, but I do feel the same about girlies. She's not on her own.

OP, I recently switched to a Korean BB cream and it's amazing! I also like Bobbi Brown's serum foundation (many hate it though) and find they make me glow.

surreygirl1987 · 04/05/2025 23:38

Oh and Laura Mercier primer was a game changer for me! Just wish all this was cheaper...

GarlicPile · 05/05/2025 00:01

If any womanies want to use setting powder but find it looking cakey, check your brushes. Try applying the powder lightly with a big, very clean and fluffy brush. Then brush over your whole face again with another very big, very clean and fluffy brush. (I think makeup womanies call it a polishing brush.)

Or use a setting spray instead.

I'm also surprised you're getting this at 30! You just might be being a tiny bit paranoid ...

It’s almost like we’re all different!?

MrsKippling · 05/05/2025 00:50

I bought some of this after seeing a few Tiktoks and I was honestly not expecting anything but it works so well! Doesn't cake or sit in lines at all and I use it as a replacement for concealer for everyday or underneath concealer (Elf camo) for if I'm doing a full face. It last all day. I have really bad under eye bags and this totally covered them! With any product it's going to work differently for everyone but at the price I thought it was worth a punt and I'm so glad I did! I think it's very close to my natural skin tone so maybe I got lucky but

Yep.

Talking about women as ‘girlies’ is demeaning.

Is it? 🙄

MrsKippling · 05/05/2025 00:54

Oh and I'm also a huge fan of the Erborian bb cream, I used to use a lot of heavy matte makeup (EA double wear) but it's just not possible for me anymore 😞

For you and a few others it may be but the rest of us have no problem with the word.

SansaStark90 · 05/05/2025 01:49

Katie Jane Hughes. Follow her. She shows you how to really use a product, as opposed to this product is amazing. Definitely how you apply I’ve realised not so much the high price point meaning quality.

Oh. And the girlies love the vibes ☺️

fedup1212 · 05/05/2025 00:36

It’s almost like we’re all different!?

It's almost like, I know what i'm talking about with makeup and at her age the most effective thing is a good base meaning she can keep using her favourite products

But thanks for pointing out that thrilling observation. The fact she mentioned she turned 30 as if that's the problem doesn't really fit with your comment.

Deathraystare · 05/05/2025 10:29

Do you feel you really need foundation? I am 65. Skin not bad and I normally use a BB or CC cream (Erborian or the Garnier vitamin C tined one with SPF 50). Then if you feel you do need coverage then one of the concealers that have been suggested for you. I don't bother even under my eyes - I just ignore what's there (normally bags!).
