The beauty industry’s biggest con

Mumoftwo52 · 13/04/2025 20:34

I truly believe that one of the beauty industry’s biggest cons is making women believe they need to wear foundation. Whenever I say this to friends they reply ‘oh but I definitely need foundation for discolouration / spots’ but SO many women wear foundation when they have perfectly lovely skin. I just don’t get it?

Watch celeb / model / influencer skincare/makeup routines and they always use foundation. Even if you have the odd spot or red patch, doesn’t it look better to use concealer? I think foundation often looks cakey and really obvious on the skin.

Obviously people can and should use what they like on their face, but it saddens me to think people feel like they need to wear foundation when their skin is perfectly fine!

I think make up is fun.

I don't like that it's gendered.

IE women are supposed to wear it. Men are not supposed to wear it.

Let men wear eyeliner!

The biggest con is that filler makes you look younger. No, filler makes you look older because it shouts out "I'm so old I need filler".

Sorry but if anyone can see you use filler then you need to find a more skilled therapist. IMHO the ONLY thing that gets rid of wrinkles is something injected under the wrinkle to flatten it out. No cream can achieve that .

It wasnt were i lived - wasnt even available in the country to buy at the time, Pan stick was hugely popular as was Rimmel heather shimmer lipstick, we were limited at the time of the shops available to us and what they stocked. Some lucky girls bought Mac in our last year of school, but they only got it cause they went to the USA with the opera for a few days

In the 90s maybe you didn’t have a Boots nearby but most places did, they stocked brands such as Clinique which were good for concealer, and their own No7 and No17 weren’t bad.

I was a spotty teen in the 70s…that’s more the era of pan stick type of things.

That’s it in a nutshell really.

okydokethen · 14/04/2025 09:11

foundation only looks nice on good skin it looks terrible on spots/dry skin/large pores/wrinkles etc

GeorgianaM · 14/04/2025 09:13

Foundation does make a difference to your appearance whether it enhances it or makes it look orange or cakey or both.

A bigger con is perfume as presumably most people in the civilised world nowadays have access to water and can keep clean by bathing and having a shower etc.

But many of us, myself included wear fragrances every day!

No we did not - i live in Ireland- there was no boots here in until 1996 and as per usuals that was in Dublin, wasn't tilll the early 2000 they expanded outside dublin - going to the north was out of the question. If was brought to Dublin, it was for an occasion so weren't let look at the shops that were there and not down with us, but it was a huge treck to go up as well, no motorways then. Couldn't afford clinique and you were too afraid to go to the counters that stocked them aswell. Got some avon at xmas time All of my friends had pan stick. It was one of the local chemist best sellers - When MAC 1ST came to Ireland it was only stocked in Brown Thomas and that was only late in 1997.

notnorman · 14/04/2025 09:23

I’ve never worn foundation because I cba in all honesty. I have age spots now and uneven skin so I would probably benefit from it… but still cba

I don't wear perfume to cover up my stench! I wear it because I enjoy it.

ERthree · 14/04/2025 09:35

It is all a con. Isn't it amazing that men can go out in public with freckles, diffrent skin tones on their faces etc? Why is that ? it's because the beauty industry doesn't tell them they look less than perfect without hiding behind a mask. It targets women because they know women they know so many women will buckle as teenagers and then they have them trapped for life.

Mumoftwo52 · 14/04/2025 09:36

CatamaranViper · 14/04/2025 08:36

And there's targeting individuals. This is hardly women building up women.

Targetting individuals by saying she’s beautiful and doesn’t need foundation? Gosh what a bully I am.

My DD’s boyfriend loves a bit of CC cream and concealer. He is a model though

Obvnotthegolden · 14/04/2025 10:25

Take it a step further, who "needs to" wear foundation anyway?
Why do we feel we need to, whether we have one spot, cystic acne, lines, discoloration, whatever it is. It's just skin, it's our faces.

Men traditionally aren't made to feel they need foundation, why are women?

Why do we have to present a certain face that is pleasing and airbrushed of any marks, lines, "imperfections"?

The whole language around the beauty industry is rooted in misogyny.

BlondiePortz · 14/04/2025 10:28

Well i would say the biggest con is people who say 'pressure make me wear male up and fake tan/nails/lips/breasts'

vandelier · 14/04/2025 10:30

Older (non filler/botox/anti ageing cream) woman here. I agree with you @Mumoftwo52 Many of these so called "influencers" would drive you nuts. Especially those who are telling interesting stories about their experiences of this and that only to do their make up at the same time and influence us to buy it.

They start off and I think, oh she looks lovely. And THEN, out comes twenty different lotions, potions, creams, concealer, contours, blusher, more something or other, then eyes and by the end many look worse than when they started! It looks ridiculously overdone most of the time. Anyway that's just my view.

I confess to not leaving the house until I've brushed some of that Bare mineral powder over my chops, and a quick whizz of light blush, coloured lip balm and out the door I go. I do that so as not to frighten the horses! It takes one minute and that's my lot. I'm no beauty, but that's in the eye of the beholder lol.

On special occasions I will stretch to a bit of CC stuff aswell, OMG.

It's pointing out things about her appearance and trying to change them to suit what you like/want to see. I don't see how you don't see that that's wrong.

Please don’t try and be offended on other peoples’ behalf, especially when it’s clear that no offence is intended. I don’t wish to change anyone or anything, but I’m allowed to have an opinion on the beauty industry and its negative impact on women. 👋

I'm one of those people who will never leave the house without makeup on, but now at 64 i only wear a cc cream plus blush, and recently been just wearing a tinted spf with a little laura geller balance and brighten or max factor powder foundation over, I still do eyeliner and mascara everyday as my eyes disappear without it.

Vitrolinsanity · 14/04/2025 18:55

I think that the difference now (vs the 80’s when I first wore foundation) is that they’re lighter and more sheer.

My first foundations were very chalky and drying, but now they’re more like a moisturiser.

I only wear tinted moisturiser these days (Olay), but on a night out or an event I pull out the Clinique and absolutely look better for it.

Vitrolinsanity · 14/04/2025 18:55

Mascara definitely, or I look like a fish.

QueefQueen80s · 14/04/2025 18:58

Even when my skin is good, I like the look of foundation, I like the evenness of colour and texture. I like how it gives me a black canvas.

MichaelandKirk · 14/04/2025 19:01

I work at home a lot. I don’t use foundation but honestly when I go to a meeting or out with OH I put on some make up and it makes me look polished and pulled together (IMHO).

Do I feel the need to wear everyday? Of course not! It’s my choice…

FeatherDawn · 14/04/2025 19:05

Mumoftwo52 · 13/04/2025 20:52

I grew up in the 90s when we were heavily encouraged to wear foundation from a young age, and many of us would get the wrong shade so we were rocking the orange look.

Of course no one’s being forced - but it has become the norm to wear it and I’d bet the vast majority don’t need to.

I don't know anyone who uses foundation, it's very old fashioned OP
I use a light Tinted moisturiser, Korean so it triples as SPF ( use extra when it's summer)
Sheer and natural -the idea is you look fresh not cakey

FeatherDawn · 14/04/2025 19:07

Ps I think you are very out of touch Op
It's natural glass look -healthy skin now

Yes but you're targeting people to point out why they don't look like how you want them to.
Your issue is with the industry, don't target individuals
