Horse racing outfit (update)

So I posted before with my dodgy waistcoat and shorts combo. Trying again! I got these jeans and boots. Obviously not with the denim jacket but thought with some kind of nice top and cropped jacket might work?

I know a bit casual for racing but I’m happy with that approach!

Which racecourse? Which enclosure? They have different dress codes

mylittledoggie · 11/04/2025 00:32

It says jeans and trainers are allowed but no sports shirts so I’m thinking not too posh! DH wearing jeans and shirt, shoes.

Won’t they get really dirty? Even the poshest race courses involve grass. To be honest this is the least “racing” outfit I can imagine. Have a look at some racing on TV - somewhere not posh. But honestly it doesn’t really matter.
I’m taking my DSS for the first time to the non posh course at Newmarket in a couple of weeks but he’ll be wearing chinos and a blazer or a suit (depending what we can borrow).
I’ll be wearing a suit and a smart shirt. DD will be wearing a dress I’d imagine. DH a suit.

Coali · 11/04/2025 07:32

If they allow jeans then I don’t think people will be particularly smart. I think they will fit the bill and you’ll fit in well.

ofcourseitschanged · 11/04/2025 07:34

@mylittledoggie No Not Quite. sorry.
If this week end you will need a coat, it's a cold wind in most places.

Wallywobbles · 11/04/2025 12:32

There’s a difference between royal ascot smart and racing normal. I wouldn’t wear jeans to either. For most people it’s a day out and a bit of dressing up. Jeans are not dressing up. Even if they are white. Still wear trousers but not jeans.

Westfacing · 11/04/2025 12:42

Regardless of the event don't wear those jeans - they're far too tight around the knees and look ill-fitting.

You have the most wonderful figure and long legs like a racehorse - please find something nicer to wear! Smile

Sunnyside4 · 11/04/2025 14:57

If your outfit is comfortable, then wear what you like. We have a prestigious racecourse within a mile if home, but have been to smaller venues. To be honest you get all sorts of outfits, ordinary jeans which I wear as I'm old and practical, so warmth and comfort come first (I've never been refused entry), others will be in fun suits or skimmed dresses and high heels.

Which racecourse? Many are on hardstanding either way.

Sidebeforeself · 11/04/2025 15:02

It also depends why you are going. If it’s a treat/celebration type event then why not dress up a bit? If you are genuinely just interested in horses/the form then it’s fine but then I guess you wouldnt be posting on here. You’ll see all sorts of outfits, but yours doesn’t look like you are going for a fun time out ( if thats what you are doing).

mylittledoggie · 11/04/2025 16:10

Ok maybe I just need to buy a dress. Any ideas?

What course? And when? I go racing a fair bit and it kind of depends on the above.

As a PP said, most racecourses involve walking on grass/mud if you want to watch the horse close up so white jeans are going to be tricky this time of year. Also as someone else said - racecourses once you are out of the buildings tend to be very open and any wind will add a lot of chill.

if you want to I suppose fit in and be practical (grass and mud and standing most of day) heels are out. Unless they are low and blocky you’ll sink in and ruin the effect.

If I was going racing this week and jeans were fine I’d probably wear Jean/brown boots and a tweed jacket.

Not all racing is the same - flat is different to jumps (mostly tweed) and a different crowd.

if you let us know the course and meeting I can be quite precise. It also depends what enclosure you are in /what ticket you have are in. Do you have a table? If it’s a standard ticket then be prepared for no where to sit and being outside a fair bit.

My generally rule for racing is comfy and warm first (flats and a good coat/jacket) - if it’s nippy you won’t take the coat off.

Seriously you need to tell us which course and when, I couldn’t possibly judge otherwise and I’ve been to many….

Munnygirl · 11/04/2025 19:07

It’s a no from me

StrongandNorthern · 11/04/2025 19:09

And it's No from me too.

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 11/04/2025 19:11

I don't think you'd get into Cheltenham racecourse wearing that, sorry. If it's there, look at Holland Cooper - that's the local uniform. Tweed or boucle jacket, white shirt and either a skirt with knee length boots or smart trousers.

Chocolatebunny61 · 11/04/2025 19:14

You won’t get into some racecourses in that outfit.

vandelier · 11/04/2025 19:22

Have a look in M+S. I think trousers/top/jacket would suit your incredibly long legs. Lucky you. Sigh.....

I just typed in "casual outfit for the races". Lots will come up, some elegant and dressy, some not so much.

mylittledoggie · 11/04/2025 19:37

If you read the thread then I wasn’t suggesting the denim jacket! And the jeans are from Holland cooper!

maursieq · 11/04/2025 19:40

At our local races the dress code for some meets would be akin to wedding guest attire on steroids crossed with Peaky Blinders, no jeans in sight.

BebbanburgIsMine · 11/04/2025 19:46

Don’t go to any horseracing at all. Don’t participate in this barbaric cruelty.

One horse ridden to death on Saturday, two horses dead today, and nearly 800 horses dead in the past two years.

Awful, awful

Cedrabbage · 11/04/2025 19:58

I was going to say some sort of light pink frilly top might work, but then I know nothing of racing

Hayley1256 · 11/04/2025 20:35

Which course are you going to and for what event? Is it just a normal race day?

JillMW · 11/04/2025 21:53

I think the jeans and boots would be ideal with a nice top. If you do decide on a dress Holland and Cooper have some really nice slim fit dresses that would really suit you and their prices are affordable

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 22:04

I don't live the jeans/boot combo I'm afraid.
