How do you dry your hair

Is it better to let your hair dry naturally or with a hairdryer with protectant? I’ve heard naturally to avoid using heat products but equally I’ve heard that when it’s wet is when it’s most vulnerable and easily prone to damage. How do you dry your hair and what condition is it in?

I just spray it with detangling spray, brush it and leave it. Haven't used a hairdryer in years as I can't be arsed with them and don't like the heat.

DinoLil · 10/04/2025 17:18

Mine is long and curly, I just let it air dry.

PoodlesRUs · 10/04/2025 17:49

What damage is it going to sustain as it air dries apart from maybe one or two brushings

Eyesopenwideawake · 10/04/2025 17:57

Quick rub with a towel and comb. Don't think I possess a hairdryer.

PrincessofWells · 10/04/2025 17:58

Curly hair - air dry.

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 10/04/2025 17:59

I've got short fine hair and it looks horrific if dried naturally. I've got a Dyson hairdryer and use GHD root spray with it. Never need conditioner and hair is in great condition.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/04/2025 18:01

I dry my wavy hair with a hairdryer with a diffuser. I'd be going to work with wet hair if I let it air dry.

TeaRoseTallulah · 10/04/2025 18:01

I wash and blow dry every 2-3 days. I have wavy hair if left to naturally dry but it completely changes texture and I can't do it often or I get scalp issues.

ItWasntMyFault · 10/04/2025 18:22

I have very fine hair which looks awful if dried naturally. I do leave it to almost dry though then put on volume mousse and use a dryer for the last couple of minutes.

MattCauthon · 10/04/2025 18:54

I have very thick hair. It's in excellent condition. I use salon-quality shampoos and conditioners (eg L'oreal vitamino - currently, or Kerastase/Redken etc). If I leave it to dry naturally it does not get the glossy smoothness I like. I usually use a hair oil before blow drying - but it's thick so I can take that sort of product.

pizzaHeart · 10/04/2025 18:58

I have fine hair and as a few PPs have mentioned they are awful if dried naturally plus I never have enough time to wait until they dry naturally so I use a hairdryer.
Tbh I need to use heat protector but I’ve bought a few in the past and didn’t like the smell.

FeatherDawn · 10/04/2025 18:59

I have wavy hair that would look like a mushroom if it airdried
Blow dry then use a big hair thing then a quick whizz over with GHDs

I use mousse and heat protect then a bucket of argan oil
Wear/a silk scarf at night
Only wash 2-3 times a week
Always looks better days 2 and 3

unsevered67 · 10/04/2025 19:04

I have thick coarse hair. I blast it until it’s about 85% dry , and then use a brush to style. I was advised to do this by my ( fab) hairdresser.
I use straighteners with heat protection spray if I’m going out.
I do use expensive shampoo and conditioner, and use hair treatment masks regularly.

unsevered67 · 10/04/2025 19:05

My hair is on the dry side but I’m post menopausal and it I think it still looks good

ilovetomatoes · 10/04/2025 19:06

I recently bought this after years of using a hairdryer. Game changer

I use a microfibre turban, then either leave it to dry naturally or if I need it to look decent asap I will use a hair dryer - more often than not I’ll just leave it as I’m lazy 😂

PeachesPeachesPeachesPeachesPeaches · 10/04/2025 19:07

I have quite thick long hair and I started blow drying this year after a lifetime of air drying and it’s made the world of difference to my hair and scalp health. I lost a lot of hair last year due to quick weight loss but I’m seeing so much new growth now. Blow drying twice a week with a heat defence spray.

mizu · 10/04/2025 19:08

Another one who doesn’t possess a hairdryer. Wash in the shower in the evening every other day or there abouts and leave to dry. No products. Long-ish fine hair but quite a lot of it.

ooh, really? DD and I have been eyeing up such gadgets. She, of course, is interested int he crazy-expensive Dyson/GHD ones. This seems far more affordable. What kind of hair do you have? Mine is very thick with some natural wave. DD's is curly, quite thick, and there's a LOT of it.

mizu · 10/04/2025 19:12

My problem is laziness but that hairdryer brush looks easy to use.

I rough dry with my hairdryer then use this. The heat is lower than a hairdryer so it’s not as damaging. It’s easier to manage than a dryer and a brush, especially at the back. Leaves my hair smooth and bouncy. I can’t quite believe it.

can also use it in dry hair to refresh my style. It’s really very good.

I have long fine wavy hair which looks like a birds nest if I leave it to dry naturally

I have fine wavy hair but I have a lot of hair. Not sure how it would work for thick wavy hair, best to check the reviews.

im super happy with it

FridayNightFever · 10/04/2025 19:24

@ilovetomatoes i am also very intrigued by this. I have curly/frizzy hair that I much prefer to wear straight so spend too much of my life thinking about and doing my hair. I used to have a cheap hair straightening hair brush that I used on air-dried hair after washing at night that really saved me time the next morning with the straighteners. BUT I had to give up using it because it was breaking my (frankly quite fragile) hair. Is this a hair breaker??! Thank you!

rightoguvnor · 10/04/2025 19:26

I have post-menopause, thin hair with a slight wave, shoulder length.
i wash and condition, comb gently with a wide tooth comb, spray protection and wrap up in a turban then go and have a cup of tea. When hair’s 50% dry I comb through, spray protection, and dry in three or four sections using a Revlon volumiser. My hair looks good (clean, good condition and whooshy) for at least 3 days. I think the 50% dry thing is key.
