Facial and chin hair

NC for this, I'm mortified. I will spare you the details but my elderly neighbour lady has humiliated me today in front of people; including my children; when she pointed and laughed at my chin hair. I feel so ashamed..Anyway, I've read in some of the previous posts that hair laser removal is great for getting rid of facial hair. How many times would I have to go to the beautician on average? (I'm on a low budget) Is shaving necessary beforehand? (and won't it make things looks worse?) ... What would you recommend?... For info, my skin is light, the hairs are dark, so I use bleach cream (same on my upper lip...) I've also trimmed and tweezed my chin hair in the past, but this made it grow faster and longer... I'd be grateful for some tips... Thank you.

@Oldwood Thank you for your tip. Could you please tell me if it looks like a cotton bud? I'm not exactly sure which tool you mean but I think I have an idea.

It does a bit, sorry I don’t know how to attach a picture but when I googled “hair removal spring” they show on Amazon. It’s a spring with a plastic handle at each end which you bend and roll over the area you want to remove hair from. Very cheap and very easy. Took a little while the first time I used it to remove hairs but with regular use it just takes a couple of minutes to get rid of any regrowth. I had tried bleaching, waxing, hair removal cream etc before which weren’t effective or caused skin irritation.

braun facial epilator - it’s like threading / tweezing but much easier

I’ve not read the full thread so apologies if anyone else has mentioned the following; hair growth on the face is hormonal so whilst laser can “kill” the hairs that are already growing there is still every chance the next door follicles might start growing new hair, it can be an expensive “maintenance method”. I always say at least 10 sessions on the face so not to mislead.
You may have one or two sessions and think it’s amazing but it’s often a “false result” due to the hair growth cycle- your therapist should explain this to you.
Dark hair and fair skin is the best combo for results as the laser is attracted to pigment.
Not all lasers are equal- look for places that use Lynton lasers or soprano ice.
Waxing and threading are good budget options, the hair will look finer growing back as the end is tapered. Don’t let anyone use strip wax on your face, Lycon is a wonderful brand for facial waxing. Waxing and threading however can stimulate the growth a little as they encourage blood flow to the area when the hair is removed.
Other factors to consider for the efficacy are age, if your family is complete, pre or post menopause?

Agree completely with this. I have had great success with laser on my legs, arms, etc but as it is so affected by hormones, the face just keeps sprouting new hairs. I have had many many rounds of treatments. Now sadly, lots of them are grey so laser wouldn't work anyway. I still do the odd session but the handiest thing is to shave every few days with a good mens razor. It works perfectly well.

@Oldwood This one! I have one somewhere, but I can't find it! 🙄

Pale, very fair skinned natural blond person here also, but as I have got older my chin hairs and around my mouth have started to go quite dark where they have always been blond (inc bottom of my nostrils).

I started to tweeze them out, all good then the hairs sprouted everywhere so went with a friend to get my upper lip and chin threaded, whilst she had a foot massage.

IMG, I came out with my face was the same colour as a baboons backside, the poor therapist was panicking about it, (I do not have any sensitivities or allergies) My friend really could not keep a straight face, but the stinging was so bad I had to sit with a iced cloth on for 30 mins until I was fit to be seen in public, never again.

But then I bought a Finishing Touch Flawless thingy, worked well first time I used it then......what grew back was like my DH beard, it was thick itchy and darker than before, binned.....so now I just tweeze...

Hope you get sorted OP and glad the rude nasty woman will hopefully soon no longer be your neighbour.

I really think electrolysis is the best option if possible. I know it is expensive and uncomfortable

it is definitely working for me. I have tried various options including springy face gadget.

I was told laser can stimulate new growth

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 11/04/2025 09:54

I wax, it's a pain in the arse but I've been doing it since I was 19 so it's like a routine now.

ThatBlueHedgehog · 13/04/2025 18:18

I had my upper lip threaded once and it hurt like hell!! My eyes watered a lot and I wouldn’t do it again.

had my facial hair lasered 11 or 12 years ago, 1 had 6 sessions over 6 months, it worked very well. Trouble is it grows back or is replaced, after about 8 years I saw it returning. It’s still less than before but now I shave and would consider laser treatment again if I had the money.

Do nothing. Why should you?

I recently bought this which is quite good 👍

I, like you, have pale skin and dark hair which is perfect for laser. My facial hair was really bad, chin, neck and side of face and I suffered for years. I used to have it waxed, but couldn't cope with the regrowth as I had to let it grow in order to wax again.
I started laser and the difference is unbelievable. At the point of starting, I would shave on a morning and have stubble by teatime. Now, it's pretty much completely gone. I paid for 6 sessions (one a month), then had a couple of extra sessions, because I didnt need another full 6 month course, but my hair was particularly bad. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend. In total it's cost me £300 and its totally gone x

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 13/04/2025 19:05

What a really nasty neighbour - I don’t understand how one woman can do this to another. I’ve been talking to colleagues at work recently and it’s amazing how many of us are going thru this. I use a tweezerman blade on my peach fuzz (it was on offer at boots) sturdy item and came with spare blades. I get dark, hard hairs on my upper lip and chin. My 12x magnifying mirror and phone torch r a godsend. But I’ve become almost addicted to digging out those hairs - but it’s satisfying! Occasionally get white, hard whiskers that start by feeling like spots under the skin. My worry is that, as I get older, will I be able to see them and get to them? Thinking about something more permanent

Elzibub · 13/04/2025 19:55

I’ve tried it all …. I found electrolysis just made the hairs white without getting rid of them. I’m currently using home laser. Look up Ulike laser. It’s pricey but cheaper than a salon and results on line are good. I’m on week 4 and it seems to be working. Advice would be to do laser while the hairs are still dark as it doesn’t work in light hairs. Yes you do have to shave which freaks me out but need to do this so the laser can target the roots

IIlolamay · 13/04/2025 19:58

OP don't worry too much about your neighbours comments. They're just not helpful. I've had problems with chin hair since my early 30's, no hormonal problems diagnosed although I didn't ask. I had a fab beautician who went private and she uses electrolysis but believe me you will be in for the long haul.I started of weekly then monthly. Nearly 20 years later I'm still monthly but I may be hypersensitive about how my chin looks. It will go eventually so stick in there and be patient. I've never tried the laser option.

I have dark hairs on chin & upper lip - I use Jolen sensitive facial wax strips at home, & tweezer the odd strays.

This is exactly what I do. I am also fair skin, dark hair (nearly all grey and dyed blond). I have a magnifying mirror and reasonable tweezers. It takes a very little time.

jcsc · 13/04/2025 20:00

What a crab of a neighbour. I get dark chin hair and remove it with tweezers daily. I laugh about it with my younger kids as I sit with my phone torch and a little mirror, saying don’t mind me just plucking my beard. Most women I know have chin hair. Seriously tho, ignore the neighbour and either remove or it carry on as you are. It’s no one else’s business how much or how little body hair females have

I've tried it all, and highly recommend laser. It can be painful, but will likely only take a few sessions for a very long lasting (10+ years?!) effect. With fair skin and dark hair you sound like a good candidate.

I found electrolysis much more painful than laser, even using a numbing cream. It also took ages for me to see any result.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 13/04/2025 21:39

I use wax strips and don't find it too bad. I use iNaturalist vit C oil afterwards and that works well to remove the tacky bits and calm it down.

Try to work on not being mortified by things. If she could see the hairs then other people may have too, but no one else has said anything - it's been accepted as no big deal... as should be, because it's transient.

I'm sure people like her enjoy feeding off the drama, so don't be her dealer.

Majesticalling · 13/04/2025 23:30

Laser is the best treatment IMO OP. IPL didn't work for me but Alexandrite laser is really good. It isn't permanent but does reduce/disappear the majority for a good few months between treatments I am very fair with dark hair.

Cons are; mild hyperpimentation on my. Lower cheeks and jaw, and - as you've said - it is costly. I've found a place that do one off treatments for £50. I suits me as I didn't have to pay a large sum upfront and could.book as and when I have spare cash.(£50 was whole face and.neck - just your chin would probably be cheaper).

SantoriniSunrise · 14/04/2025 09:10

I have some coarse black hairs underneath my nose which I wax off once a month.

theyellowdaffodil · 14/04/2025 20:45

i had electrolysis..not very good it is also expensive.I then had laser (which was not IPL)I had 5 sessions then adviced to come back yearly or as needed.you have to stop bleaching the hair before treatment as the hair needs to be dark for laser to work.also the hair has to be allowed to grow between treatments you are not allowed to pluck between treatments.but you can trim with scissors if they grow too long.I would highly recommend laser as the best option on the market

Danikm151 · 14/04/2025 20:54

I’ve had laser then maintain with IPL at home. Round my area full face laser is £30.
quick swipe with a razor will be your cheapest option.

The best solution I’ve found is a tool I bought in primark for £1. It’s a spring with a handle at each end and removes hairs like threading, really easy to use and very effective!

this is what you want. I have several: one in my bathroom, one in my office, one in the car centre console, one in my handbag make up bag.
Then I can just do a little whenever I think of it. Im a bit obsessed!
