Facial and chin hair

NC for this, I'm mortified. I will spare you the details but my elderly neighbour lady has humiliated me today in front of people; including my children; when she pointed and laughed at my chin hair. I feel so ashamed..Anyway, I've read in some of the previous posts that hair laser removal is great for getting rid of facial hair. How many times would I have to go to the beautician on average? (I'm on a low budget) Is shaving necessary beforehand? (and won't it make things looks worse?) ... What would you recommend?... For info, my skin is light, the hairs are dark, so I use bleach cream (same on my upper lip...) I've also trimmed and tweezed my chin hair in the past, but this made it grow faster and longer... I'd be grateful for some tips... Thank you.

My mum used to tweeze her hairs out in the car as she said the light was better, much to our derision, but she said it would happen to us one day, and she was right!

I get mine threaded every 4-6 weeks and top up with tweezing on a high mag mirror in good light in between.

QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 18:06

@cestlaviecherie Thank you for replying, it's unfortunately the long type of chin hair... I hate it.

I have dark hairs on chin & upper lip - I use Jolen sensitive facial wax strips at home, & tweezer the odd strays.

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 08/04/2025 18:11

Laser worked wonders for my chin hair. Fair skin and dark hair here, ideal for laser. You shave first yes and I just shave (dermaplane) in between sessions. I haven’t had it for about a year now and it hasn’t grown back. Am hopeful it killed the follicles.

LadyRoughDiamond · 08/04/2025 18:22

I use an epilator and the hairs seem to be less (gradually). Used to wax, but ended up removing patches of skin too. Epilator is also great for the old lady ‘peach fuzz’ that seems to be appearing on my cheeks.

BackspaceDelete · 08/04/2025 18:25

@BIossomtoes can I ask how many waxing sessions it’s taken to get to the point of not needing to wax as much?

ToBeOrNotToBee · 08/04/2025 18:28

Skip the laser and just go for the electrolysis. Honestly it's no where near as bad as you think. It's not painless, but it's not painful if that makes sense.
My sisters and I have pcos. I can grow a beard if I wanted to, which I don't. My sister opted for laser, spent 1000s, and it still grows.
2 sessions of electrolysis for £125 (in total, including consult) and it's gone.

TomaytoTomaato · 08/04/2025 18:34

I use hair removal cream once a fortnight and then tweezer the odd thick/stubborn ones that appear in between!

Same, I'm in the same boat. I'd have a full beard if I had to wait to wax it, tweezing just creates ingrown hairs and they're dark so even beneath the skin before they're long enough to shave or tweeze they're still visible. My skin is the wrong shade and type for lasering or electrolysis :/

SpringIsSpringing25 · 08/04/2025 19:02

I go to a magician & she waxes my chin & upper lip. It stings on my upper lip, makes my eye water! But it's great not having a dark shadow there. I just book when I notice them, about every.5 weeks. I get my underarms done too. I try to get all 3 at the same time, but occasionally skip one if it's looking ok..

there was a muck up once with the booking & I got someone else who was far far from a magician. If she had been the first at that salon I would not have gone back!! So it can be trial & error!!

I might look into laser or Electrolosis... it's sounding like it might not need as many sessions or be as expensive as I thought.

but I'm definitely not teetering anymore.

& I CANNOT do it myself, no way can I inflict that much pain on myself!!

FirefIy · 08/04/2025 19:08

I’m sorry your neighbour embarrassed you- that was horrible of her.

MLaser hair removal has been brilliant for me. I will say, I have PCOS so did a LOT of sessions in my chin but it’s been worth it- all I have now is two little wiry white hairs each side and I pluck them.

I also got the side of my face/hairline done and that was sorted in only four sessions as it wasn’t hormonal. My upper lip took 6 sessions.

I’m pale with dark hair so an ideal candidate really.

Hope you’re ok after the upset caused by your horrible neighbour 💐

QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 16:50

@suburburban Thank you for your kind message, I am definitely going to consider electrolysis, other members here have mentioned its efficiency.

I’ve tried the other things but not the laser on my face

I did wax and do springy face thing and have threading.

although the electrolysis is expensive it does seem to be an improvement. I find it quite painful though.

try not to worry too much OP😀

Edited

I think electrolysis would work on any hair shade, it’s more the laser that needs some pigment?

Fibrous · 08/04/2025 19:17

As an aside, I had laser hair removal on my bikini line and underarms about twenty years ago in my twenties. It worked a treat! Some grew back but very sparsely, I just tweeze them out every couple of months. Thought I’d give some long term feedback on the procedure.

I'm fair with dark hair.

QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 19:25

@StrangerThings1 Thank you for your reply, indeed she is absolutely evil, I still don't know what to say about it to my children; I'm still shocked; but thank God she's put her house on sale and that's good riddance!
I've never heard about dermaplaner, this too goes on the list of options.

@BePoliteOpalQuail Thank you for your reply, everyone kindly gave me tips as I asked for suggestions, and some mentioned that vile neighbour. But everyone who kindly took the time to reply to me, like yourself, not only made me feel better but also reminded me that there are more good people in the world than people like that nasty woman next-door.

Doggard · 08/04/2025 19:31

You tell your dc that despite what insta would have us believe, women do have hair and it's completely normal. Society has evolved to make women feel shame so we spend money lining old white mens pockets and so people choose to remove it.

You also tell them that this woman was very rude to comment on your physical appearance and is a bully.

QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 19:31

@Fibrous Thank you, laser seems like a brilliant option.

Dreamhaus · 08/04/2025 19:34

I honestly just shave, it's not a problem. It takes less than a minute every other day, my skin looks fine, and the myths about it growing back thicker are a load of crap; it's just because it doesn't pull the hair out from the root so when it does grow a bit it can feel different. My skin is smooth, no one has ever commented or noticed, and it's painless. It's not for everyone, but unless going for something pretty permanent or long lasting then it's worth considering.

QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 19:37

@Doggard Thank you, you know what; you are absolutely right; that's exactly what I need to tell my DC, instead of feeling embarrassed! And society has still got a lot to learn. All your points are valid and I will discuss them with DC. As far as the neighbour is concerned, I will have a word about her rude behaviour, that will make me feel better, and I sincerely hope she sells her house quickly!

@Dreamhaus Thank you, do you use this special tool to shave your face? (like a special blade for the face)?

@FirefIy Thank you for your kind message and support. I'm feeling much better reading all these wonderful messages, and got lots of advice. Thanks to the detailed info you provided, it looks like laser could be worth it while on a low budget.

@SpringIsSpringing25 Thank you for your message, glad I'm not the only one who'd rather not wax herself! I hope I can find a magician right away...keep fingers crossed. Electrolysis has been mentioned by a PP so it's on the list of options.

OP posts:
QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 19:49

@TomaytoTomaato Thank you for your message, I haven't thought of the cream, in fact I didn't know there were so many options out there. This gives me hope.

QuickCoffee · 08/04/2025 19:54

@ToBeOrNotToBee Thank you for your message. I am so sorry to hear your sisters and you have Pcos. Electrolysis seems quite promising (and fast), thank you for telling about the pain being bearable, I must admit I have a very low pain threshold but I just want this hair gone so ready to try it.
