Cath Kidston not longer popular?

I used to was a huge CK fan, at one point I had about 80 of her items, my house was like CK shop, tens of bags, mugs…
I loved visiting their cute little shops scattered around the country and always finding something lovely to buy..
Also you could see many people wearing CK bags, I could always count seeing a few daily and I live in small town.
But now all is gone.
I mean- they are still trading online at Next and apparently there is new CK shop in London but it’s not the same.
The new designs from Next are not like those what made CK famous, they are unpretty patterns, which could be find in any other shop.
What a shame!
I just looked on CK at Next at their sale bits and all bits there since I looked 3 weeks ago, nobody buys there anymore..
Even when I buy a newish item ( made by Next) it doesn’t give me the same lovely feeling I had when I purchased it in their own shop.
plus the prices are hideous, same style small bag that used to cost £15 is now £60.
I still have about 20 bags I bought pre Covid and I’m seriously thinking selling them all ( I don’t think there is actually even interest in them as few are listed online already and nobody even looked) and just forget all about it.
Anyone has the same?

Market saturation. It’s no longer coveted once every joe blogs has something from there and it’s become common, it loses its value, and so its popularity.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 06/04/2025 09:59

Why would you worry that you can’t buy more, whilst simultaneously considering selling what you already own and presumably liked?

AnnaMagnani · 06/04/2025 10:01

It was trendy and now trends have changed.

If you like your CK stuff then keep it! But if you have now changed as well, maybe hold off buying 20 bags in the new trend as experience has shown you that in a few years you will be thinking 'why did I buy all these?'

TheSassyAmberNewt · 06/04/2025 10:04

It went into administration and Next bought the brand. There’s no shops anymore and Cath Kidston the person has nothing to do with it. So not surprising it’s not got the same oomph as before.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 06/04/2025 10:07

My cats are very much in favour of their Cath Kidston igloo (it was a gift from a friend whose cat rejected it 😹)

I know all that, but even when she was long gone, they still traded until Covid hit with quite pretty bits.
of course I can still buy more but it doesn’t have the same feel as it used to be in their actual shop.

It’s very mass market - it’s not going to give you a ‘premier purchase’ feeling.

BeaAndBen · 06/04/2025 10:16

Chintz came in fashion, went out, came back in, went out, and so on. That’s how it goes.

If you like it but are bothered by it being unfashionable (which it is - market saturation and styles changed) then bag it all up, use one of those vacuum bags to make it small, and put it in your loft until it comes around again. Then it will be “vintage”

(like all the hideous 70s crockery from childhood my Mum couldn’t wait to throw away and sells for stupid money now. And is still hideous)

modgepodge · 06/04/2025 10:17

It was a very particular aesthetic which was huge about 12/13 years ago (I loved it then too). In 2012 everything was branded with a Union Jack, those flowery patterns etc. but fashions moved on and cath Kidston carried on with the same stuff. It was their look, which is fine, but that look wasn’t in fashion any more.

Sofiewoo · 06/04/2025 10:17

I don’t think it’s been popular for like 20 years.

user2848502016 · 06/04/2025 12:44

I used to like them too and they used to be good quality- now they’re just the same as anything else except more expensive because they’ve got the CK logo. Their mugs also aren’t dishwasher safe which is ridiculous imho

Oh really? I don’t have any new mugs, I have some of the old ones called Stanley mugs ( the large ones)
Yeah I bought few bags on next but it’s just not the same, looks rubbish and feels like one too.
i get people say cheap chintz crap etc here, but it was something what we liked.. not everyone’s ones cup of tea but it was our coffee…

It was very popular like 10 years ago.
There was lots CK Facebook groups with each 40k- 80k followers.
There is none now as Next ordered all shut down and delete.
I didn’t know CK 20 years ago, I only started following in 2008..and it was really huge around 2011-2015

Like many fashion items, they go in and out of fashion. It was a fad, and it was ubiquitous at school runs, toddler groups, church etc and now it's no longer trendy.

More recently, I've spotted a few bags in charity shops.

Personally, I didn't like the oil cloth bags, as they it seems so obviously aimed at the mums of small children.

I have a few mugs…mine are deffo dishwasher safe. Either that or I’ve just been lucky!

I loved their Peanuts collection, on the lookout for the glasses as DH broke one of mine 🙄.

I also like the bags being oilcloth as I’m clumsy and messy 😅

Didn’t she have a ‘Ratner’ moment that put people off her brand?
2013 - she gave an interview sneering at the ‘housewives’ who bought her products!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/04/2025 17:00

Her pale blue floral bags are a stalwart in every charity shop near me right now. Can't remember if it were CK or Emma Bridgewater who had a range where everything was covered in spots. I didn't mind it but felt 😯 at the price, just for some polka dots on a mug.

TheMovieFlopped · 06/04/2025 17:02

Funny seeing this thread as I’m having a sort out and my once loved CK bags have gone into a black refuse bag and will be going to the tip along with a load of other junk.

Edited

I read that she said somewhere that her house didn’t even looked like her prints but very minimalist style..
I couldn’t understand as why she then made the prints if she was not keen on them to have them at home?
I must say I feel nostalgic to some prints as some reminded me my own childhood, my Nan always had similar or even same prints bed sheets or table clothes..
We actually had a print at home on duvet sheets in the 80s which later was on CK website, so yes she must got inspiration from pastimes…

I have a few CK bags that I’ve bought from Vinted. I couldn’t afford the prices in the shop here.

I love them, I was so happy to be able to get some on Vinted, I don’t actually care whether things are fashionable or not, I like them and that’s all that matters to me.

Oh god. Really? I just ordered 4 last night as a birthday present. She really wants them. It didn’t even cross my mind to check if they were dishwasher safe. It’s not 1991. Jeez.

SnoozingFox · 06/04/2025 17:36

I have a Cath Kidston bag, I like their cross-body ones and have had about 6 over the years. Current one is red with spots. I don't really care about it being fashionable, mass-market, exclusive, not on trend, I am too old for that sort of shit.

The brand started going downhill when it moved from its core business of retro prints with a British feel, florals, 50s vintage into producing horrible Disney items and patterns.

Very true about the Disney prints, I never bought any as not keen. That when it all started going down.
