Which jacket and shoes would you wear with this dress?

I am thinking navy fisherman sandals but not sure about the jacket. No denim or leather, please.

Also is the dress hideous? It was only a few pounds off vinted, so I won't be offended!

What’s the context? Everyday or wedding or Buck House garden party?

Navy sandals would surely be awfully drab? Bright yellow or pink would be more summery.

Given the little ruffles on the shoulder it’s not really a dress that’s made to be covered by a jacket. A collared white shirt beneath might be rather nice. There’s too much material in the sleeves and bodice for this year’s little cropped faux-Chanel jacket. Not sure about a field jacket.

For styling ideas have a look at

Doen

which has several similar looking dresses on its site.

Wow, thanks! @CapaciousHag

I was thinking of wearing it to the pub in the day/ evening but casual not smart. Yes the sandals may be dull. It's a shame about the jacket as I think it would break it up a bit. I am 50 and it looks a bit odd on me without a jacket as I am broad - shouldered.

Ok - how about a little quilted gilet? (As it’s too warm for anything furry.) Let’s see …

Plumo has completely failed to provide what I’m thinking of but it may be your sort of thing anyway. I’m not forbidding you from wearing a jacket with the dress, btw! (If pushed I’d probably wear something in Harris tweed) but a sleeveless garment would be better.

Although I’m pretty sure all those tiers balance out broad shoulders …

I will have a look at Plumo. I also like your suggestion of a shirt underneath. Do you think fisherman sandals will look dull? Thanks.

I would wear clogs and a quilted jacket or maybe a thin knitted kimono type cardigan. It’s a pretty ugly colour though. If it’s cotton could you dye it?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 03/04/2025 21:19

I wouldn't wear fisherman's sandals with that dress. I think you risk looking like an actual fisherman in a biblical, 12 disciple sense

It's a bit drab for my taste but shoe wise I'd want something frivolous- silver or gold metallic flat pumps or Mary Janes or velvet Mary Janes.

Jacket- either tweed- fitted riding jacket or over sized or quilted cotton.

sparrowflewdown · 04/04/2025 07:56

I am getting the consensus of it being a bit drab! Yes, I agree. Haha yes about the biblical reference! I am rubbish at putting outfits together.

Thanks for the help. I like the idea of a quilted jacket. Would that be a long gilet or a short quilted one?

I am also leaning towards this dress being a bit of a dud.

OP posts:
sparrowflewdown · 04/04/2025 07:57

It also has loops for a belt on the second ruffle, should I ignore that?

QuirkInTheMatrix · 04/04/2025 08:10

Honestly, I’d worry you’d look like you’d joined the Amish in that dress. Maybe it will look nice on but the colour isn’t great, loads of material, looks drab.

Britpopbaby · 04/04/2025 08:10

Dr Marten Sandals in a light tan colour with maybe a light knitted vest top. Just avoid yellow for the 80’s brownie vibes.

Britpopbaby · 04/04/2025 08:16

Light knitted tank top= tank top

CapaciousHag · 04/04/2025 12:10

I don’t know about being a bit of a dud - it depends on so many things. The fabric, your colouring, accessorising. I had rather assumed you were thinking of channelling Debbie Harry at the Vanity Fair Oscar party …

This would be the length of gilet I’m thinking of; I quite like this but not sure it’s the one for your dress:

Aime London gilet

Really like this - but then, I don’t subscribe to the ‘one half tight, the other loose’ mantra:

Doen jacket

And this would be so much fun:

Damson Madder gilet

newrubylane · 04/04/2025 12:40

If you feel like it needs a jacket then I'd tentatively suggest the dress itself isn't right. Surely the great thing about dresses is you chuck them on and go?

However: I'd go for a bright beaded sandal and I second the quilted jacket option.

I agree re dresses. A jacket over a dress is needed if it's cold, but not to add anything to the dress. I agree with the suggestions made.

Ignore the "looks Amish" comment.

It's a terrible dress. Put it back on Vinted!

sparrowflewdown · 04/04/2025 22:58

Grin Please elaborate. I am starting to agree tbh!

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 04/04/2025 23:24

Haha. I can usually find something nice to say about most things, but this dress? No. There's no redeeming anything about it. It's the kind of dress that the even Maria von Trapp would have refused.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 04/04/2025 23:26

FWIW, I always think that if you need to ask the critical mass/Mumsnet about how to wear something, they it's a sign the whatever it is isn't right for you in the first place.

That's ok, not great but breaks up the brown.

Colenimo does fabulous gilets and waistcoats but I don't like that dress.

Colenimo, like Plümo are very, vaguely, almost, but not really in the same ball park as your dress. Have a look at Colenimo's dresses- or Toast for stylish versions of this type of dress.

Ha! I debated adding Colenimo to the list of inspirations for the OP - particularly as they have a few sleeveless things. But then I remembered she’s said she has broad shoulders - so if she likes any of their clothes with actual sleeves she’ll find herself woefully disappointed. (I know this because I spent hours in the shop trying stuff on. All gorgeous - but I too possess Shoulders, so came away without the things I’d hoped to buy.)

Shetlands · 05/04/2025 01:52

Fisherman's sandals, rope belt, large cross on a chain and a white wimple. 😉

Monty27 · 05/04/2025 02:00

A belt and a funky cross over tan bag and tan sandals. Glam sunglasses and maybe a pashmina in br>ght colours with good earrings.
