Any tips for getting rid of dry hard skin on heels

I have dry hard skin on my heels and I'm looking for the best way to get rid of it. Any foot file, pumice or product I should try?

I quite like the glass pumice stones that look like a sponge but are hard. Flexitol Heel Balm is good for softening the skin and particularly good if the skin is cracked and not heeling. Apparently you should moisturise your feet like you do your hands.

These are my go to. I used to have one of those micro pedi things but this file is much better. I use the Kerasal on a night a few nights a week before bed and wear socks to help it sink in. I also use the Kerasal on the skin around my nails.

A good long walk on the beach in bare feet rubs it all away. Including paddling , wet sand and dry sand it sloughs it all off

Oistins · 29/03/2025 22:07

I have a battery powered foot pumice type thing from Scholl which I use about once a week, I also use Flexitol about twice a week and moisturise my feet daily when I do my body.

My feet have no hard skin whatsoever.

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 29/03/2025 22:08

Yes. Use Footner which is a footmask thing that after about 10 days, all your hard skin peels off, leaving feet as soft as a baby! Once they are at this stage, you then need to use a footcream daily - my favourite is CCS cream.
At first I did Footner every 6 months or so, but since using the cream religiously I don't need them.

Talisin · 29/03/2025 22:08

This glass foot file from Scholl is amazing. Follow up with Flexitol heel balm or the like.

dudsville · 29/03/2025 22:09

I have a file that I use occasionally, and more regularly than that I apply a thick lotion with vaseline on top and socks. It's hard on the warmest days in summer to bear the sock treatment, but it does keep them soft.

Second the Footner foot socks. They’re incredibly effective

If uses the grumm foot scrub with a pumice stone and their foot moisturiser and it works really well. Plastic free too! And smells nice

TheCurious0range · 29/03/2025 22:17

I use a rechargeable foot file I got from Amazon about once a month (more in sandal season) and CCS cream once a week, with socks over the top before bed. At first I did the cream most nights but don't find I need to now

CorneliaStreet · 29/03/2025 22:17

Flexitol heel balm is the best cream for this, gets rid of hard skin in about three days if you put it on each evening.

aliasname · 29/03/2025 22:17

Wish I knew.

Did a Footner 3 weeks ago - fantastic, loads of hard skin off. But already one heel is nearly as bad. I can’t use another Footner for a few weeks, and anyway the other foot is okay & I don’t want to overdo it.

A couple of nights ago I couldn’t sleep, it was so hot and ITCHY. I ended up taking the corn knife to it in desperation. And of course the inevitable happened (those blades are sharp!) and now there’s blood on the sheets.

Foot cream helps a little, but nothing really gets rid of the worst bit. I also have little electrical sander, but it’s not very powerful and would take hours to get through the hoof.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 29/03/2025 22:23

Thanks I will try a glass foot file and possibly footner. I had a good foot file in the past that worked but haven't been able to find one as good. I have read wearing open toed shoes or having bare feet doesn't help.

I had one of those school battery powered things years ago and have no idea what happened to it but my feet definitely need some TLC!

Podiatrist

littleburn · 29/03/2025 22:50

@aliasnamecould it be athletes foot? I had rough heels that wouldn’t go no matter what and were itchy. Turned out it was moccasin athletes foot, which you get on the heel rather than between the toes. Fungal foot cream twice a day and filing every other day cleared it up.

CurbsideProphet · 29/03/2025 23:06

I got to a podiatrist a few times a year and use Flexitol in between.

paintdisaster · 29/03/2025 23:08

Yes! I went to have an ingrown toenail sorted and she asked what I used as she couldn’t find any hard skin to remove
weekly on dry feet - microplane foot file (go easy, it’s tempting to overdo it)
in the shower - I’ll use a body scrub but I also wash my feet with bar soap and exfoliating gloves
every night before bed I use CCS foot cream

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/03/2025 23:15

I started a mission with this a couple of weeks back. Big filing with a metal foot file thing every night, then CCS cream, then socks. After a week I moved onto light filing then the cream.

I’d seen on TikTok about “habit stacking” so my routine has been to do 90 seconds of plank, feet, socks - it’s worked a treat and I haven’t missed a night!

Really?! I did wonder about that, as sometimes I get athletes foot between the toes. And it’s hard to understand why the combination of Footner/cream/file/knife never completely fixes it. I am hopeful you may be right…

SpringIsSpringing25 · 29/03/2025 23:44

Do you drink much water? It's important to be well hydrated.

Cantonet · 30/03/2025 00:16

40% urea cream from Amazon overnight followed by a rich cream & socks. A quick wipe with the ordinary glycolic acid in the morning to remove the dead skin. Recommended by a dermatologist I follow on Instagram.

BillyILash · 30/03/2025 00:42

I have an electric foot file, use to use battery operated ones not I have a rechargeable one. I haven’t needed to use it as much since I started soaking my feet in apple cider vinegar. I also use the moisturising foot socks, just cheap honey ones from home bargains.

ive recently bought a lavender foot cream from Avon I like, just apply it when I feel like.

ive gone from needing to regularly file and moisturise my feet to filing maybe once a month and keeping them topped up with moisturiser a couple of times a week. Went from daily soaks to once a month with the apple cider vinegar.

Edited to say wearing the right type of breathable cotton socks makes a huge difference.

Tbrh · 30/03/2025 00:50

Ask your GP to prescribe you some "fatty cream AFT body butter", put it on every night, better if you can wear socks overnight. Then use one of those battery operated pumice stones. Feet will be looking great in about two weeks. I think there are some foot masks you can use too, but haven't tried to be able to comment
