Best dewy foundation that doesn’t gather on my skin! Aged 43

Hi

Used to use Bare Minerals tinted moisturiser but need a bit more coverage. Just wasted over £50 on two of the best selling Clinique foundations, one which made my skin very dry, the other gathers over patches.

Generally my skin is good, just struggle to get on with foundation!

thank you x

I'm a makeup fanatic and have tried out most brands. I've got to say that I hate the Clinique range now, I used it a lot when younger but there is so much better out there in a similar price range! I use the Hourglass Veil which is nice, and I also have Pat McGrath Labs foundation for higher coverage days. Nars tinted moisturiser for every day. As others have said it's all in the prep. For me I go with a micellar cleanse and then start with vit C serum (Sunday Riley or Glow Recipe) then some light moisturiser and a primer (I dislike the silicone or gel ones). I also use the charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Glow under foundation if I'm wanting a bit of a filter glow but not always. Best bet is to go in store (Space NK) for some colour matching and advice. Once you know your shade you can get better deals online or freebie gift days.

Armani Luminous Silk.

I’ve got sat upstairs - Even Better Clinical and Moisture Surge Hydrator. The Hydrator is the worst one, really thick and gloopy.

Wondering if primer is the way to go, I’ve just always been put off as it another layer of stuff on my skin…

I must say, mine is so much better since I've laid off the primer! Finding the right moisturiser is half the battle, I've found - unfortunately it's a case of trial and error.

I love Clinique Super Balance.

shivermetimbers77 · 29/03/2025 09:42

I also love the L’Oréal Tinted plumping serum someone else mentioned above.. Sali Hughes also rates it , it’s about £10 and I find just as good as the very expensive ones
i have tried. Never makes me feel ‘cakey and flakey’ like some foundations do.

If you have good skin, have you looked into CC or BB creams? They are not all created equal, so don't give up after first try. I use Erborian CC cream or even CC water, which is super light and leaves a lovely moisturised glow - not much coverage though, if that's needed.

I agree with this post. I've tried loads of bb cream and the best one I've found is the L'Oréal magic BB. Good coverage and sits well on the wrinkles.

Absolutely avoid garner BB and olay 7inOne BB. They pile and look orange and awful.

Fenty eaze drop is another one that gives a better coverage and is nice and dewy. I do have to use a setting powder with this though as it doesn't stay put all day without one.

The best coverage I've used, but less dewy than the rest is elf soft glam satin foundation. Long lasting and is nice and light on the skin. I use the elf gel moisturiser under this for the best finish as some regular moisturisers don't mix well with it.

Armani luminous is heavy and cakey, as is bobbe brown and nars. I find Clinique to be oily and it pills on my skin.

Estee lauder is okay, but still a heavy finish (I wish they would bring back the double wear lite) 🥲

I keep coming back to YSL touch eclat foundation, it’s not perfect but seems to sit on my 50yo skin best. I have dry patches now (it only gets worse) but sometimes add a drop of almond oil either to my moisturiser or to the foundation. Seems to help it sit better. I’ve had a few branded samples through from cult beauty/SpaceNK/lookfantastic which have been awful but were highly rated - I assume they work better on younger skin.

I use Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette over the top which is truly amazing, I’ve had lots of comments about my glowing skin with that.

HauntedHen · 29/03/2025 10:02

I’ve tried pretty much every ‘drug store’ foundation. All the Rimmel, Max Factor, L’Oréal, Maybelline etc.

The best foundations I have found have been No7 Hydraluminous and No7 Radiance and Brightening. There is always an offer on and No7 staff are always really helpful in colour matching and giving you a voucher for some money off.

Im early 40's with dry skin & I use the Maybelline super stay skin tint foundation & it's fab on the skin, lovely coverage & sits really well on my dry skin, makes me look glowy & healthy & I find all my other products work well with it,i used a good primer under it (an elf one at the moment) & it stays all day

Totally agree with Maybelline super stay, I have tried every foundation under the sun and that’s my fave. You do need a good cleanser to get it off though!

Ramblingaway · 29/03/2025 11:10

Yves Saint Laurent Nu Bare Look Skin Tint provides more coverage than the bare minerals without caking or going orange. Easily bunged on in the morning, with a spot of concealer for under my eyes. Might not give you enough coverage but could be worth a try if you have always preferred lighter coverage in the past. It can be tricky to jump from a BB cream to a full coverage foundation.

Pegsmum · 29/03/2025 11:28

NARS Light Reflecting foundation is the best imo, Armani Luminous Silk is a close second but didn’t have enough coverage for me and my red face.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/03/2025 11:37

Laura Mercier is the classic and v good - technically a tinted moisturiser but more like a light foundation. I’ve used it for decades and people say nice things about my skin when I do.

lots of people also like Nars, but I found it too runny

Clinique wash morning and night, serum, moisturiser. Clinique face Scrub once a week. Then a moisturising face mask once a week.

Also, I think that’s quite a harsh regime if you mean a non oily wash

I’d use an oily wash or a balm at night and a v creamy wash in the morning. Don’t use a facial scrub - just use a bamboo flannel at night a few times a week.

minipie · 29/03/2025 12:14

I really like NARS light reflecting and sheer glow - BUT their colours tend to the yellowy so no good if you are more pink or neutral.

I also like Laura Mercier, which is good for pinker or neutral skin.

Interested to try the No 7 based on above

However what really makes a difference IME is the moisturiser underneath. I have a thinner moisturiser and a thicker moisturiser, I prefer the feel of the thinner one but makeup definitely looks glowy for longer with the thicker one.

So maybe a richer moisturiser is what you need? And/or a less drying face wash as a pp suggested.

I'm 53 and this is the best I've tried. I can't get away with a tinted moisturiser as I have uneven skin tones and broken capillaries. It lasts all day and covers without looking cakey. I only apply where needed and blend it in ☺️

prettyneededchill · 29/03/2025 12:19

Another vote for Estee Lauder Futurist. I have skin like the Sahara and it’s the only foundation I’ve kept re-purchasing.

I use Chanel https://www.chanel.com/gb/makeup/p/145764/n1-de-chanel-revitalizing-foundation-illuminates-hydrates-protects/

It's not dewy - more satin/natural. But it glides on beautifully if I use a good primer. Primer wise I use one from either 'it works' or Boots No 7 flawless. Once I've applied the foundation I spray a dewy make up fix over. I like NYX or Milani dewy. I'd say it give a light to medium coverage, and lasts well through the day. I've not experienced caking.

Price wise it's not cheap - I tend to buy it from JL when they have an offer on (usually 20% off make up or similar). I never buy direct from chanel as it's £60 whereas with JL it's £50.

JL will often give you a tiny pot to try at home too.

To add I am early 40s and have combination skin.

Edited

Seconded. I used to use their Les Beige until it was discontinued - I find this one has slightly more coverage but without any 'clinging' to skin

cigarettesanddisappointment · 29/03/2025 12:22

Have you tried the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ cream? It has good coverage and is still dewy. I’m the same age and am having the same issue with foundations, I’ve been searching for the holy grail for a couple of years and this one is the best I’ve tried; I’m currently using the Estée Lauder Double Wear but it seems to sit on top of my skin, if that makes sense?

MattCauthon · 29/03/2025 12:23

Love the Trinny BFF foundation.

Nota60sChick · 29/03/2025 13:07

43 is hardly getting on a bit.
I thought you meant someone in their 60s.

I like Bobbi Brown new foundation- it's £43 full price but on offer at the moment.
I'm on my 3rd bottle. It's light but lasts and has a slight glow.

LOreal Match is supposed to be good for a tenner.

If you put moisturiser on let it sink in for 10 mins before putting on your foundation.

I like ELF primer- the pinky one that is moisturising.

Nota60sChick · 29/03/2025 13:12

DIOR Forever Nude is nice but I bought the wrong shade so it's more or less unused.

mynameiscalypso · 29/03/2025 13:18

Similar age and similar experience with some foundations! I generally use Eborian on a day to day basis but, when I want more coverage, I use Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation with primer underneath. Much better than some of the other expensive foundations I’ve tried that just sit on my skin.

superplumb · 29/03/2025 13:24

Eborian super bb is great. Long lasting dewy and decent coverage.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 29/03/2025 13:25

I had the same issue with piling and makeup collecting in my pores.
I stopped using Clinique dramatically different moisturiser and switched to Cerave and the problem stopped immediately.

If you’re using a water based foundation then you need a water based moisturiser and vice versa with oil or else they will react.

I use Charlotte Tilbury beautiful skin on top of the Cerave lotion now. No need for primer or anything else.

zaxxon · 29/03/2025 13:27

I had to throw away my No 7 hydraluminous foundation. It was one of the worst I've tried, made me look like a zombie

PrimalLass · 29/03/2025 13:28

By Terry Cellularose CC Cream. Fantastic stuff.
