All my clothes don’t fit

AllMyClothesToTheTip · 24/03/2025 19:15

I know this is a first world non problem, but I’ve just been through my wardrobe putting winter gear away and getting out spring/ summer and all my clothes don’t fit.

I’ve lost 2 stone and a bit and dropped from a size 14/16 a 10. My bras, knickers, shorts, jeans are all 2-3 sizes too big. My bras are a cup size too big and my back is smaller too.

The worst thing is, a few years ago I chucked/sold/ donated all my younger size 10/12 clothes as I resigned to never being that slim again.

I can’t afford a new wardrobe and I was quite upset actually when I went through my stuff and I realised I was wearing baggy unattractive clothes to hide my mum tum and my wardrobe is quite dowdy. I just tried on a linen dress that looked like a sack.

I’m undecided whether to bin the lot of it, and have less things or just say sod it and just spend the summer wearing crap clothes with a belt.

Do you have a sewing machine or can you borrow one? I too have lost weight and am adjusting my clothes although I had kept my ‘thinner’ clothes.

Theres lots of you tube videos on how to do it if it’s an option. Lidl currently have sewing stuff and have a great little thread box with loads of colours for a fiver.

BeretRaspberry · 24/03/2025 19:27

Can you afford anything? Even just a few cheap basics like bras, knicks and and maybe some £3 vests from Primark or similar. I’m just thinking if you had a few new bits to go with the older stuff if might not feel as bad. As penny says above, you could also try altering. YouTube is definitely your friend there!

UpMyself · 24/03/2025 19:28

Buy underwear that fits first. Nothing will look good if you're in the wrong underwear.

mynameiscalypso · 24/03/2025 19:30

Can you sell some of the stuff that's too big for you now?

Katrinawaves · 24/03/2025 19:30

Can you sell the old stuff via Vinted and buy some nice pieces from there in your new size to replace them?

AllMyClothesToTheTip · 24/03/2025 19:36

I think I might end up putting things on Vinted. Only thing is, hopefully I won’t put the weight back on!

The items are just too baggy to wear, especially the trousers. Having ill fitting clothes makes me look like I’ve been really ill and not eaten for 6 months.

Agree with get underwear that fits.

Then work through what you have. Woven tops will look better than jersey / tshirt material. Find someone local who can alter some of your better things.

I'm having to replace most of my things because I had a mastectomy, and it means a careful change in style. It's a sod but I'm doing it gradually, buying one good basic piece per month. Plus browsing Vinted every night

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/03/2025 19:44

Sell the clothes if you can. Buy well fitting underwear - makes you feel good annd you deserve it to look your best, and then shop at Primark and Matalan for a few bits that will mix and match in the size you are. You can add to them over the next month(s).
thats what I’ve done - I’ve lost 10 stone in six months and gone from size 20 down to a 10. I just bought what I needed to get me through as dropped the weight. (Fingers crossed I don’t lose anymore.)

lindyloo57 · 24/03/2025 19:44

I have opposite problem, all my jeans and bras are now too tight, I feel over winter I've put some weight on round my chest and waist.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 24/03/2025 19:45

Charity shop.

This!

ANagsHead · 24/03/2025 20:45

Truly, @Alphabet1spaghetti2? Good reasons, or?

How do you feel?

Oldgalgames · 24/03/2025 20:50

I'm in exactly the same position OP, iv bought a few bits from vinted to tide me over. Planning on uploading aload of stuff myself at the weekend to give me some extra cash for more clothes, I am determined not to put the weight back on hence I want to get rid. I'm still loosing at the moment so don't want to spend a great deal either buying new stuff

I feel ok now, but it came about as a result of dealing with my husband’s sudden death and a whole host of problems that emerged with his estate, plus the way he was treated and died. It has been a rollercoaster - not one to be recommended on trip advisor. Certainly not a planned weight loss.

AllMyClothesToTheTip · 24/03/2025 21:00

Gosh, sorry to hear that Alphabet1. I hope you are OK.

Pick your favourites that you know you will wear to death and hunt vinted for them just in the right size.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/03/2025 21:07

@AllMyClothesToTheTip I am pleased to say I’m doing ok. That’s enough.

But not planning on buying a new wardrobe full of clothes again! It does get a bit expensive…

ANagsHead · 25/03/2025 03:56

Good of you to respond - thank you. My condolences.

I guess you won’t know for a while whether your weight has stabilised.

Swearwolf · 25/03/2025 06:27

Definitely agree to a Vinted swap!

I don’t know if it helps you feel better about giving away your old stuff and selling your too-big things, but honestly if you keep stuff in that way there is always the chance that if it does fit again, it will be outdated by then or you won’t like it any more. Styles change and your own taste will shift, and you might not want to wear those things in the future even if the weight comes back. Vinted is great as a straight swap, cost-wise.

Xiaoxiong · 25/03/2025 07:15

Please don't feel bad about getting rid of your "thin" clothes. I hung onto mine, and now I fit into them again they are hideously out of date - shiny synthetic fabrics, the cut is all wrong, etc. Also, I'm in a different job now, the standard expected is different and far more casual post-pandemic.

Here I thought I was buying "timeless classics" and it turns out fashion moved on more in 10 years than I thought!!

HorrorFan81 · 25/03/2025 07:20

I've literally just done the same thing - lost nearly 4 stone and finally back at the elusive size 10. I got some knickers and one bra this weekend and am trawling Vinted for at least a few outfits

DelilahDystopia · 25/03/2025 07:33

Alphabet, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Op, how long have you been your current size for and how long were you bigger? I've been a range of sizes over the course of my adult life and was never honest with myself about these two questions. When I lost weight I was "never going to let myself get back to a size x, y, z". Gleefully got rid of clothes and bought new ones. Well, I'm sure you can guess what I did next 🫠.

Unless you're really short on space I wouldn't get rid of any nice clothes which are too big unless you've been your new size for quite a while. Is there a way to alter them maybe?

I'd put them away and get a few cheap / secondhand pieces to tide you over though

LollyLand · 25/03/2025 07:35

Sell and replace.

Go to Primark for some basics to get you by for now. Leggings and basic tops are in fashion so cheap and easy.

Blackcordoroys · 25/03/2025 07:37

I’ve done the same, and like others am buying one nice thing a month. This month a lovely polo neck, next month will be a dress to wear to two weddings this summer. Even replacing my tights!

Sell it on Vinted and then you can use the money to buy some new things. Last year I made over £600 on Vinted. If you have kids, their stuff sells well too unless stained.
Well done on your weight loss.
