All my clothes don’t fit

I know this is a first world non problem, but I’ve just been through my wardrobe putting winter gear away and getting out spring/ summer and all my clothes don’t fit.

I’ve lost 2 stone and a bit and dropped from a size 14/16 a 10. My bras, knickers, shorts, jeans are all 2-3 sizes too big. My bras are a cup size too big and my back is smaller too.

The worst thing is, a few years ago I chucked/sold/ donated all my younger size 10/12 clothes as I resigned to never being that slim again.

I can’t afford a new wardrobe and I was quite upset actually when I went through my stuff and I realised I was wearing baggy unattractive clothes to hide my mum tum and my wardrobe is quite dowdy. I just tried on a linen dress that looked like a sack.

I’m undecided whether to bin the lot of it, and have less things or just say sod it and just spend the summer wearing crap clothes with a belt.

Same here, gone from a 16/18 to 8/10

Buy bra and knickers that fit. Don't need to be expensive but they will make a huge difference to comfort

Im another who had a wardrobe of sizes and even though Im determined the weight isnt coming back ( two years now ) Im still scared it will. So when I went through taking out the too big stuff, favourites I have vac packed away - JIC. Ive got to have another cull this summer as vest tops which I live in during the summer are just hanging on me now. Luckily living and working rural, my wardrobe has never been high fashion so a lot of my small sizes are back in use

Im also buying new bits that are needed from Matalan and Sainsburys ( I don't have a lot of money and both these shops have clothes I like at prices I can afford ) and I hunt through charity shops. But the best purchase to make is definitely undies that fit

I would keep anything that you like and could get altered to fit you, perhaps that linen dress? Sell anything else that you can, donate the rest. Check out the Next sale/clearance section online, they have good brands with decent discounts there - I never buy anything full price anymore.

Thank you all. You’ve helped me a lot.

With your wisdom I’ve decided to get rid of a lot of my clothes (sell, recycle <H&M £5 I believe> or donate). You are right in that, even if I put weight back on, I don’t think I want to wear these clothes anyway. They aren’t classic, they will be 5-7 years old.

I’m also hanging onto things. I’ve a few dresses that I had to buy for weddings. They are decent brands, and 2 sizes too big. I’m not going to any more weddings I don’t think, plus I’d need a new dress if I did because I’ve lost weight, and the same crowd would all be there. I’m going to sell them.

I’m going to seriously Marie Kondo everything.

I have to wear a sort of uniform to work, and I’ve too many clothes for work, so I’m getting rid of half. When I’m not at work, I’m working out a lot down the gym or running, or doing chores, so don’t need to replace these really. It was more being squeezed into old work out gear, and it is now just a bit big.

I’m going shopping today and I’m going to buy new underwear and have a look around. Wearing bras that are too big, and oversized clothes just makes me look like I’ve been ill. I’m going to go through my wardrobe and see what I desperately need.

I’m very happy with my weight loss, but most pleased that I’ve toned up and am looking fit and healthy, I just don’t want to wear my old baggy clothes and bras that are 34FF when I think I am now a 32E or F and my knickers are a 14, when I need a 10 :(

If you want new things Matalan is worth considering, I go to charity shops a lot and the clothes can be worthwhile. Vinted and ebay are worthwhile but if you need things straight away then primark is worth popping into.

Well done you! You have the right mindset for going forward. Don’t hold on to clothes that are too big. The rule I set myself is to not grow out of my size. If I feel clothes getting a bit tight I keep a food diary which soon shows me where I’ve been overloading. Also keep up with the fitness. It will make you feel better all-round and because you e lost boob size too, it might be worth getting g a bra fit.

I went shopping yesterday and bought a pair or work trousers, cream wide leg jeans and a dress from H&M. Also got £5 off with recycling. I bought 2 bras too. Down a band and a cup size. Didn’t have time for the knickers!

There’s not much inspiration in the shops. I had to drag myself away from looking at shoes, makeup and perfume. I DO NOT NEED ANYTHING…Repeat.

I’m spring cleaning and decluttering today. I’m going to ruthlessly cull my clothes. I don’t need many I’ve decided. I probably only get dressed properly once a week (gym to shops to home to chores and dog walk. Work uniform(ish) to home to loungewear/ cleaning grub. I don’t go out that much and our holiday this year is sports related and in the cold so no need for swim and beachwear.

I might be back on later as I’ve some very hard decisions to make over beautiful floaty maxi dress that I bought 2 years ago and never worn, now 2 sizes too big.

Sounds like yiu e got it all under control.
Apropos the maxi dress, check out Vinted to see if it’s up for resale in a smaller size or check on the shop website. If available then sell on the one that’s too large. 😊

TheOliveFinch · 26/03/2025 17:36

I’m in a similar situation and have lost 2.5 stone, I have been selling a lot of my old clothes on eBay and also buying things in a smaller size also mostly on eBay so fairly cost neutral

vac-pac anything that doesn't fit at all, and stick it in the loft. (review in a couple of years whether your weight was changed again, and make a decision on selling/throwing out then).

The stuff that fits best, keep and leave out - this is what you're wear day to day, figure out what you like, what your style is etc.

The stuff that kind-of fits, keep somewhere vaguely accessible, but not in your wardrobe - maybe a separate draw, or in the spare room? You can use this if you really need it. If you don't, at the end of the season vac pac it and put it in the loft with the other stuff.

Anything you really don't like and wouldn't wear again, even if it fitted, sell.
Bin your underwear that doesn't fit.

Buy yourself some basics that fit as soon as you can - packs of knickers, 2 bras that fit properly, white tshirt, maybe a couple of decent tops, and some sort of jacket (denim, or blazer style maybe?). Then when you've got the money spare you can add or replace other things - jeans, trousers, dresses etc.
Aim to build up a new wardrobe slowly -avoid spending a whack of money on a whole cheap wardrobe at once!

That's the worst advice I've read on this post. Why would the OP want to keep her fat stuff just in case in couple of years she's put on weight.
I am sure the OP has no desire to ever fit in those clothes again.

She might not, but she's regretting getting rid of her old clothes, and has said she can't afford to buy a new wardrobe, so she needs to keep some of them regardless.
She's also regretting getting rid of her old stuff, so keeping stuff that doesn't fit currently, and re-evaluating in a few years isn't necessarily the worst idea. She might not have the desire to fit into them again, but having them as a backup in case she needs them again, and avoiding throwing everything away and having to shell out £100s on new stuff seems sensible to me!
