What will help burning/stinging if rosacea?

Decisionsdecisions1 · 21/03/2025 11:56

I've developed rosacea out of the blue - am 50s and menopausal and have very sensitive skin so not a surprise perhaps.

I'm also already under care of a dermatologist and on immunosuppressants for severe eczema and have an appt in few weeks so will ask for her advice, but in meantime does anyone have any recs for something that might help with the burning/stinging sensation?

As I already have skin issues I'm very careful about the skin products I use (retinols, perfumes, using water on my skin etc are a no) , always wear full.spectrum suncream etc.

It's so depressing 😔

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast is good for irritated skin

Floisme · 21/03/2025 12:11

I had a similar episode in my 50s and I hadn't even suffered from sensitive skin beforehand. I was so desperate, I grabbed a bottle of olive oil from the kitchen and the relief was instant!

Anecdotal and it might not work for you but worth a try? Olive oil light, if you can find it, will also reduce the salad bowl smell.

247SylviaPlath · 21/03/2025 13:19

The only thing that helped mine was Soolantra, to get rid of the problem…a year on and still no issues…the GP said I might need another treatment at some point but so far so good

Decisionsdecisions1 · 21/03/2025 14:17

Thanks all - I've put on some Eucerin Atocontrol just because I had some to hand and it's helped a bit. I can't avoid going out in the sun and I really don't want to give up running (both were triggers) so hoping to sort it.

Argh just tried Cerave after reading so many reviews on MN for rosacea but it stings like mad! Skin feels so dry and tight but everything stings….

Have you tried La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Crème? The daytime one in the upright white/clear pump. It’s not cheap but is the only moisturiser I can use on my similarly over-reactive rosacea skin.
Is your spf mineral and is it high enough? I use 50 indoors and out throughout the year.

Thoughtsonstuff · 21/03/2025 16:20

Oh bad luck. How annoying!

I had perioral dermatitis recently (bit similar family to rosacea) and the only thing that didn't sting was Avene cica cream. The other thing I used was my son's prescribed emollient cream which was basic but good.

If you want to camouflage it (although if its really sensitive Id just go cold turkey on any product for a while), Rosalique green cream is made for rosacea.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 21/03/2025 16:21

I'm hesitant to use la Roche as I've tried a different product from their range before and aggravated my eczema. Have the magic combo of eczema and rosacea.

Trying to get an earlier dermatologist appt to see what's going on. My face is a burning stinging mess and I just want to cry.

I use Eucerin ultra sensitive.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 21/03/2025 16:22

Thanks all for the tips. I know what to do with eczema but have no idea with rosacea. I definitely got the crap end of the skin stick!

Decisionsdecisions1 · 21/03/2025 16:23

Joyless - currently the only thing I can use is Eucerin ato control so maybe will stick to Eucerin.

If it's like PD the other thing to try is getting antibiotics in a skin cream. Metrazoile or something. I got mine from Skin+Me and combined with the Avene cica cream it calmed things down. Not much else helped. You could send some photos to skin+Me and see what they suggest. You say you are seeing someone anyway so with any luck they might help with that.

whatwouldlouisaguydo · 21/03/2025 16:31

Hmm, that's tricky. I would still try the Toleriane creme as it's different to La Roche's other ranges. I found it was the only one that calmed the stinging and now it's my holy grail (along with daily spf). I couldn't/can't tolerate anything else, not even Avene or Eucerin.
Hope you find some relief soon.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 21/03/2025 16:32

Thanks Thoughts. I've already used Klira for hyperpigmentation but my dermatologist prescribed that - as I'm already on medication I don't want to be on multiple types of poss.

It's just come out of nowhere.

In the interim try Laneige Waterbank Intense moisturiser (it’s the one in a dark blue pot not light blue) - from someone with similarly sensitive and irritated skin, this helped soothe it before I had the Soolantra and I still use it now. Not cheap but usually a 20% deal somewhere and it lasts ages as you need so little (it’s really thick but never greasy or heavy) .

247SylviaPlath · 21/03/2025 17:45

Tried Toleraine before that and no joy - hope you hit on something that works for you, it feels awful, I know

hazelnutlatte · 21/03/2025 17:48

I have roseaca and have improved it by removing anything harsh from my skincare regime, using avene hydrating serum and cicaplast cream, using spf every day even in winter, and stopping using saunas and steam rooms (and also having cooler baths and showers).
However my skin doesn't actually get painful, just very red so my recommendations might not be enough for you.

SoapCollector · 21/03/2025 18:30

I agree with @Floisme that a simple oil may be your best bet at the moment. I use coconut or almond oil for cleansing and moisturising and find it gives some relief. For me it's not a miracle cure but it's nice to use something that doesn't burn or sting!

@Floisme please can I ask if you use any other (none stinging!)moisturizers on top of the oil as I'm finding oil is not always moisturising enough for my skin (especially now it's getting dryer with age 😁).

Silvertulips · 21/03/2025 18:32

do you have a photo?

Im asking because it maybe the coldsore virus which you can treat with coldsore cream.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 10/04/2025 21:01

Just wanted to update - consultant has confirmed it’s rosacea and prescribed Soolantra (off to research MN threads on Soolantra!)

I can’t use my eczema steroid cream in the same area so trying to use moisturisers designed for atopic dry skin to keep it calm….so far Aveeno Calm, Weleda skin food and Eucerin Atocontrol haven’t aggravated my skin. Someone recommended SVR products and they look promising.

Thanks all for the tips.

Glad to read you managed to get a diagnosis and found some skincare that works for you. I’m going through a similar journey and have spent a fortune on skincare since January trying to find products that don’t sting and irritate my skin. I think I have finally found something I can use which is REN’s ever calm range. I use the day cream and overnight balm. So far so good and my face is calming down a lot. Good luck and hope things improve even more for you!

Decisionsdecisions1 · 13/04/2025 08:17

Three days into using Soolantra and my face is a burning stinging lumpy mess. I don't know whether to persevere or stop and restart when I'm home from holiday...

OP posts:
Phunkychicken · 13/04/2025 08:36

Where are you on holiday? And is it sunny? UV is a known rosacea trigger, it might be that you have reacted to the sun/UV and it's just a coincidence that you've started the soolantra.

I am currently going through my own rosacea journey and discovering that many of the sun creams I was using thinking they would help are actually triggering me. Currently safe ones are altruist and la Roche Posay. Clinique/L'oreal/ any dry touch or quick dry ones are a definitely nooooo. Think it's the alcohol and or fragrance.

Most of the foundation I have is very much a no, as is anything perfumed.

I can't advise whether to carry on the Soolantra or stop but I would suggest looking at what else could have triggered your flare first to see if there's anything you can tweak.

Good luck, it's a complete nightmare

DearBee · 13/04/2025 09:13

I've had rosacea for years. Going to suggest something a little. MSM capsules (from Holland and Barrett but can be found elsewhere) really help me. Also look at dietary triggers - nightshade vegetables flare mine up.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 13/04/2025 17:59

Phunky I'm a big fan of altruist sun cream.

The rosacea was triggered by sunshine when the weather started to warm up early March.
