Tinted moisturiser & other make up questions

Hello style and beauty experts,

I always used to wear liquid foundation till a few years ago. I'm 48 now and Whenever I use foundation I find it gets stuck in my wrinkles and just looks too heavy and artificial. I recently tried bb cream but I found that still too heavy. I'm thinking of trying a tinted moisturiser now as I would like to even out my skin tone a little. Also my skin looks terribly dull without anything. I have a few questions:

  1. Is there a tinted moisturiser you recommend? Ideally with spf (bw 15-30, I've got darker skin and don't go out much). And non greasy. I've got super dry skin but it looks always greasy.
  1. What is the difference between tinted moisturiser and cc cream?
  1. If you wear a tinted moisturiser do you still need a non tinted moisturiser or does it provide enough moisture?
  1. If you use a primer does it go on before or after rhe tinted moisturiser? My usual routine if I wear make is: 1. Moisturiser, 2. Primer 3. Liquid Foundation

Also can anyone recommend a mascara that is water and smudge proof and super light? I don't want to add volume or length and I don't want to have mascara bits sticking to my lashes. I just want something to darken them slightly.

Finally, can anyone recommend some sort of kohl pencil that definitely doesn't smudge or leak at all? I am looking for something with which I can draw a very thin and very soft line on my upper lid but the soft kajal or kohl pencils I like all smudge and appear under my eye eventually.

Genuinely finally, can anyone recommend a sunscreen that doesn't look white and is extremely matte? I've not found a single one that doesn't make my face look greasy.

Actually finally now, what is the best way to remove make up? If I use foundation I need to wash my face but I find it doesn't remove all the make up under my eye and it's difficult to wash off everything on my neck. I've tried wipes and cleansing solutions but they just don't feel that clean. Does tinted moisturiser also have to be washed off?

  • Try a skin tint, they are everywhere at every price point. I rate the Lisa Eldridge version but you should find something to suit. Evens out your skin without being heavy or claggy.
  • cleansing balm or oil to remove makeup and SPF. I like Aldi's Lacura cleansing balm or Una Brennan's Vitamin C cleansing oil. They remove everything including mascara. Cerave do a good cleanser.

-SPF there are more brands than ever that offer clear SPF that does not leave a white cast. Biore Watery essence, ELF do a clear SPF for under make up.

I use SPF instead of moisturizer and then makeup on top. That way I know I have applied enough SPF to cover my skin properly.

I really like The Altruist tinted moisturiser
which has spf 50 I think. It’s brilliant at evening skin tone and makes me look more human without making any effort, it’s matte formula too so may be what you’re looking for. It doesn’t settle in my lines or wrinkles and it works like a colour corrector (cc cream) as it’s green when it comes out of the tube and turns skin colour when applied to the face, it reduces the redness and blotchy patches on my face.

I got it from Amazon but I’m sure you can get it elsewhere if you don’t want to buy from there.

I don’t use mascara so can’t help with that!

Binfire · 20/03/2025 11:30

I forgot to mention that I put a different moisturizer on first as I have dry skin, and treat the tinted moisturizer like a foundation/spf on afterwards. It does need to be washed off or it’ll clog your pores.

garnier anti age bb cream
moisturise first and apply only a little

That's what I'm using but I'm finding it still a bit heavy.

Oh I like looking human!!

Is this the one?

I don't really have a problem with redness more like uneven patches of brown if that makes sense and generally my skin has started looking very dull.

I received a free sample of the Erborian BB Cream which has Ginseng in it. I’ve found it to be nice and light but with a bit of coverage.

Titasaducksarse · 20/03/2025 13:06

Nars pure radiance tinted moisturiser. It's brilliant as you can wear as tinted moisturiser or build it up to a fuller finish. It contains spf.
I wear moisturiser underneath.

Facial suncream that's non greasy...vichy capital soleil.

Kardamyli2 · 20/03/2025 13:36

I recommend Chantecaille Just Skin. It's expensive, but probably no more so than eg Dior, and you don't need to use much. I use my normal moisturiser underneath and don't use primer.

Chuchoter · 20/03/2025 13:38

For a tinted moisturiser just use your favourite foundation and add moisturiser.

For a glow add a drop or two of liquid highlighter.

minipie · 20/03/2025 13:44

Watching for recommendations

I have used the NARS tinted moisturiser which is good, fairly high coverage for a tinted moisturiser but a little too matte and the shades aren’t quite right for me (they are mostly on the yellow side)

I have also used the Erborian BB cream, love the texture and coverage level but find the lighter shade looks a little bit grey? The Erborian CC cream has almost no coverage so only for great skin days

Interested in trying the Lisa eldridge skin tint but no idea how to choose a shade, I am fussy about shade matching!

Ooohee · 20/03/2025 13:47

Nars. 100%
I haven’t used foundation in years, just Nars tinted moisturiser

LadyOfTheCanyon · 20/03/2025 13:50

Origins Ginzing range do a great tinted moisturiser with spf40. If you’re Caucasian that is.
Victoria Beckham eyeliners will not budge - less spendy is Kat Von D - they stay on for hours.

I take make up off with micellar water and pads then wash my face with an oily cleanser. One gets the make up off and the other actually cleans your skin. I use Hada Labo or Superfacialist vitC or the Superdrug own brand one.

MotherWol · 20/03/2025 13:51

I really like the Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser (the natural dewy one, not the oil-free), the shades are a good match for my cool-toned skin. I found the NARS range were more warm/yellow toned and didn't match as well. I usually wear a light moisturiser under it, but not a primer, and apply with fingers/sometimes blend with a sponge. I find that plus concealer is enough coverage and evens out my skin tone well.

CavaInTheSun · 20/03/2025 13:53

So I bought the Nars one after a load of recommendations on here and honestly I find it way too heavy, almost like some of my foundations.

Much prefer no7 tinted moisturiser in the grey tube (although I’ve just got the one in the pink tube which the lady in the shop said is even lighter coverage) light coverage and you can pretty much always get a good deal as well which is a bonus!

I do wear moisturiser underneath.

Haven’t worn foundation in years now as I find the tinted moisturiser so much more flattering.

Pickledpeanuts · 20/03/2025 14:05

For your lashes have you consider just getting a lashes tint? You can get a pack to do your own at home, or get a simple tint at a salon. Lasts a few weeks each time.

I use the no7 tinted sunscreen. It's like a bb cream, so light, spf50 and although it is lightly moisturising i wear proper moisturizer underneath.

I second the Origins tinted moisturiser; I find it excellent. I have very dry skin, especially in winter, so I do sometimes use ordinary moisturiser first, and then the Origins on top.

Thisissuss · 20/03/2025 15:09

I would have recommended City Block by Clinique but see it has apparently changed formula recently (I luckily did a bulk buy so have a full tube of the old stuff)

XiCi · 20/03/2025 15:09

I've only been using Nars tinted moisturiser for a week and 2 different people have told me how good my skin looks. It's really light, evens out your skin tone and gives you a bit of a glow. It's spf30

XiCi · 20/03/2025 15:12

Victoria Beckham eyeliners will not budge

Strange as I found the exact opposite. Theyre really smudgy and end up half way down my face after less than an hour. Biggest waste of money and ended up in the bin

MsPug · 20/03/2025 15:18

I've used Estée Lauder tinted daywear for a million years 😊

No33 · 20/03/2025 15:22

I'm another that uses eborian CC cream.

Very lightweight and lovely coverage

IlovePond · 20/03/2025 15:28

Hi,

EL Daywear tinted moisturiser is nice if you don’t need a lot of coverage.

I absolutely love Milk’s Hydro Grip Gel Tint from SpaceNK. I would never have bought it myself as I wouldn’t have thought it was ‘my thing’ but SpaceNK sent me a free sample and I am now hooked. It gives skin a lovely soft glow that is long-lasting and moisturising. (No SPF included, but you can put that on first.)

I agree. NARS is great and it’d expensive but a little goes a long way!

Mikart · 20/03/2025 15:34

I've just bought Bobbi Brown tinted moisturiser....I use moisturiser spf 45 under. I'm 66 and it is glowy in a natural way
