Tinted moisturiser & other make up questions

Hello style and beauty experts,

I always used to wear liquid foundation till a few years ago. I'm 48 now and Whenever I use foundation I find it gets stuck in my wrinkles and just looks too heavy and artificial. I recently tried bb cream but I found that still too heavy. I'm thinking of trying a tinted moisturiser now as I would like to even out my skin tone a little. Also my skin looks terribly dull without anything. I have a few questions:

  1. Is there a tinted moisturiser you recommend? Ideally with spf (bw 15-30, I've got darker skin and don't go out much). And non greasy. I've got super dry skin but it looks always greasy.
  1. What is the difference between tinted moisturiser and cc cream?
  1. If you wear a tinted moisturiser do you still need a non tinted moisturiser or does it provide enough moisture?
  1. If you use a primer does it go on before or after rhe tinted moisturiser? My usual routine if I wear make is: 1. Moisturiser, 2. Primer 3. Liquid Foundation

Also can anyone recommend a mascara that is water and smudge proof and super light? I don't want to add volume or length and I don't want to have mascara bits sticking to my lashes. I just want something to darken them slightly.

Finally, can anyone recommend some sort of kohl pencil that definitely doesn't smudge or leak at all? I am looking for something with which I can draw a very thin and very soft line on my upper lid but the soft kajal or kohl pencils I like all smudge and appear under my eye eventually.

Genuinely finally, can anyone recommend a sunscreen that doesn't look white and is extremely matte? I've not found a single one that doesn't make my face look greasy.

Actually finally now, what is the best way to remove make up? If I use foundation I need to wash my face but I find it doesn't remove all the make up under my eye and it's difficult to wash off everything on my neck. I've tried wipes and cleansing solutions but they just don't feel that clean. Does tinted moisturiser also have to be washed off?

La Roche Posay facial sunscreen on a tube is wonderful. Matte and great for my sensitive skin. I use Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturiser as it glows but not greasy and sweaty looking.

I'm 50 and use Bare Minerals complexion rescue which has SPF 30. It's great and doesn't settle in your fine lines.

I'm using the nars tinted moisturiser and it's really nice applied with a beauty blender sponge. The Laura Geller one is also good.

I have dry skin so always use usual moisturiser first and wait 15 mins before applying tinted moisturiser

Trinny BFF if you want super light but I do love it or Lisa Eldridge skin tint if you want a tiny bit more. I'm the same age and honestly the two best I have tried and I have tried every single one on the market, if all price ranges.

I've tried some budget cc and bb creams, and they slide off my face and never really seem to dry. Should I go up in price? My normal foundation (mac) dries and I can put blusher on top.
Any tips? Is it the product or the application, I wonder.

Erborian brightening CC creme (purple one) sounds like it would be great for you.

Or just the normal one in Doré. It has SPF in.

I also LOVE Beauty of Joseon rice water SPF 50. They do a tinted sunscreen which has great reviews but not tried it myself.

Clarins- not sure if is bb or cc but for dry skin it was mind blowing and I always got compliments. Wore with a primer (Aimee Connolly or glossier) and then mac spray fx after- so a lot of work but worth it! They’re very limited in shades though.

I tried garnier, Nars and it cosmetics, rosaleic, L’Oréal, Roche power tinted moisturiser and none sat well with me (all very shiny and greasy either in look or feel)

Clinique felt amazing but shade obviously didn’t suit as I regularly had people ask me was I ok, I looked a bit ‘off’😅 Estée Lauder was gorgeous but like putting on cement, a lot of work involved!!! By the way a lot were testers, some pharmacies are fab at letting you try out, skin very sensitive so people were nice about it, I made sure to go back and shop with them

I love the origins tinted Moisturiser

Estée Lauder everyday

The problem is different things suit different skin types, as you can see some like something and it doesn't suit someone else,

For me at 64 I use eborian cc cream in clare and doir which I have to mix to get the right shade.
Eye liner pencil is a hourglass one , the only one on me that doesn't move, as long as I put it on with a brush,
Mascara no7 the one with a slim brush, doesn't budge and easy to remove.

ScribblingPixie · 20/03/2025 18:16

I had the same problem, tried the NARS which also settled in tiny patches on my face. Now using Eborian cream which is perfect.

Another vote for La Roche Posay. It's expensive but a little goes a long way.

They do an "invisible fluid" suncream that isn't greasy, goes on under makeup if needed, and comes in tinted or un-tinted. It also has a great broad spectrum uv protection.

I feel like I can help!
I start with Neostrata sheer hydration SPF 40 which I use all year as moisturiser/sun screen. It was recommended to me by a dermatologist and is IMO fantastic. Sinks in completely, doesn’t block pores, isn’t chalky. Expensive but a game changer.
I then use the Clarins BB skin detox fluid. Has spf 25. I find it helps with evening out skin tone and it sits well on the skin doesn’t emphasise wrinkles/pores. Is a light/medium coverage. I have tried Trinny BFF which is ok but I don’t think it lasts as well. I have also tried the No 7 BB cream and tinted moisturiser. Both ok and a good price. I think they are a lighter coverage but also don’t last as well. (I use a cleansing balm and cloth to cleanse so can see by what is on the cloth how much has stayed on all day!) I am interested to try the Erborian BB/CC creams as they get good reviews.
I use Clinique lash power mascara. As you say it doesn’t extend or thicken. It’s just a thin product that coats your lashes and I find it doesn’t smudge. But as a previous poster has suggested try getting a lash lift and tint. I do this for holidays or just when I’m in the mood and if your lashes are longish you don’t need any mascara. I have just had my lashes done and they look great. I might add Donna May fake lashes to the outer corner if I’m going out. (They are brilliant and very easy to apply. )
As for eyeliner-I use Clinique quick liner intense. They come in nice shades (I personally wouldn’t use black eyeliner at my age because it’s too harsh) they have a smudger thing on one end to soften the line. Alternatively use a small brush (like a lipstick brush) and use a little eyeshadow around your eyes. Never smudges.
Sorry that’s a lot ! but I think like you, I generally just go for a little boost rather than a full face of makeup!
