Online meetings and alternatives to a dressing gown

Yes, I know the topic is style and beauty and given the title of this thread including a dressing gown for work attire, I am not the target market for this section of the forums. However, here we are.

I WFH exclusively and am in online meetings daily. If at all possible, I like to keep the camera off because I'm a slob. BUT sometimes I do have to go on camera. I need something to wear over my clothes, to stay warm, because I don't have the heating on in the day.

If it's a camera off situation, you'd better believe I'm in my dressing gown. But clearly, as a professional, it isn't appropriate with the camera on.

Does anyone have a suggestion for something I could look less slob-like in, but with the warmth factor of a fluffy dressing gown?

I have just bought a borg lined hoody from the Crew sale which will be my WfH uniform from now on, it's the cosiest thing I've ever owned Grin not exactly smart but presentable enough for my work

I do get dressed when I WFH, but I’m often still cold despite layering up. I’ve tried a variety of heated blankets, hot water bottles etc. the warmest solution I’ve found is a large mohair blanket, folded double, which covers me from ankle to just below camera shot. It’s toasty warm! I found it in a charity shop for £20 so it was nowhere near as horrendously expensive as a new one would have been.

NotMilanese · 15/03/2025 09:40

@RunsAndWalks Probably you were just kidding, but I think it would be risky to enclose yourself in a tent indoors with any kind of heater....

Xiaoxiong · 15/03/2025 08:54

One of my colleagues showed me the inside of her gilet - it's heated with a rechargeable battery!!

I have a standing desk because I find that if I move around I don't get so cold.

Yes I have a heated gilet, I love it!

What am I reading.... pop up tents around desks etc..... just put the heating on! Wow! By the time you have bought everything that people have suggested cashmere jumpers etc..... you may as well have put the heating on!

We've got a big five bedroom house, it doesn't make sense to heat it just for me. i do sometimes pop the heating on if the dog looks cold though

Reachforthestars00 · 15/03/2025 09:59

I have a roll neck knitted black cape/poncho that I can throw on over other clothes. Its very warm, looks fairly smart, and goes with everything!

Just heat the room you are in! Turn the thermostats off in the rooms you aren't using and leave it on in the one you are using.

Or get a room heater!

ShinyClouds · 15/03/2025 10:10

Marks and Spencer’s do two packs of really fine but very warm thermal tops and leggings. Easy to put normal clothes on top

Do people not realise they can turn off the heaters in the rooms they aren’t using? I didn’t think this was that unusual. We only have the heaters we need to use turned on and you can also set a timer to only heat in the times you need it so none of this “for the whole day” needed. Ours is a standard gas central heating system, different if you’re relying on storage heaters I suppose.

Jumper, cardigan. Scarf. Heated blanket. Camera off is very dismissed in my world. Don’t get me wrong, I mostly wear pj bottoms
but top half is dressed and presentable.

bridgetreilly · 15/03/2025 10:41

Heated lap blanket that they can’t see; lovely poncho that they can.

I'm not spending my days scampering the house turning radiators on and off (not least because I am disabled).

I do have a room heater. But I prefer my heated blanket

We have gas central heating, but why would I bother with all that faff when I can just heat myself/my study?
Outside the school day the house is full of children and their various hangers on.

I keep one of these scarf/ jumpers FreyaHarper handy for surprise video calls and just make sure my camera is lined up properly.

Love this! Thanks for sharing the link.

You need a long cardigan from Henrietta Steffensen. They’re made from fleece so comfy and warm but manage to look smart enough that you can wear them for work calls:

I find that Uggs and a chunky cardigan work well for me. The Uggs really do make a huge difference when seated for a long period of time.

pistaacioaquestion · 15/03/2025 11:41

@Amonyme I find it interesting that you’d see it as faff or scampering about. We only put on the heater in the room we’re in and it’s never crossed my mind that it would be faff. I’m disabled as well for what it’s worth. Maybe just depends what our own families did growing up as to what we view as normal or faff. I couldn’t imagine heating the whole house every time, that would cost a lot more over a year. It’s literally just turning a dial on the radiator in our house and there’s not a heater in every room. Maybe it’s different in your house though.

Ahsheeit · 15/03/2025 11:48

I have a black, fleece lined hoody along with my heated throw, plus fingerless wrist warmers/gloves.

FinallyHere · 15/03/2025 11:50

m&s heavy heatgen thermal fleece lined tights and polo neck. The footless version of the tights more comfortable so I wear thin socks and a thicker over sock

’any normal long sleeved top’ on top of the polo neck.

heated throw across my lap anytime necessary which is really not often.

Therams not cheap but repurposed from the ones I use to spend hobby time outdoors, and wear thermal shower proof trousers and wind proof fleece on top.

We have a houseful of people, so use the whole space most of the time even though it is large. And every disability is different of course.

AdoraBell · 15/03/2025 11:51

Jumper or cardigan with a scarf.

user2848502016 · 15/03/2025 12:42

Just a plain hoodie?

Jk987 · 15/03/2025 17:05

I don’t know how you’d feel professional in pjs.

WhereAreWeNow · 15/03/2025 17:20

Heated blanket on lap. Thermal top and nice jumper/cardi on top. Maybe a couple of jumpers if it's really freezing. And I have a little plug in radiator too.
I don't like working in my dressing gown. I like to feel vaguely dressed for the day even if my clothes are really comfy and casual.

The work I do is professional and I have to turn work away. Therefore I feel valued and that my profession is respected. QED
