Online meetings and alternatives to a dressing gown

Yes, I know the topic is style and beauty and given the title of this thread including a dressing gown for work attire, I am not the target market for this section of the forums. However, here we are.

I WFH exclusively and am in online meetings daily. If at all possible, I like to keep the camera off because I'm a slob. BUT sometimes I do have to go on camera. I need something to wear over my clothes, to stay warm, because I don't have the heating on in the day.

If it's a camera off situation, you'd better believe I'm in my dressing gown. But clearly, as a professional, it isn't appropriate with the camera on.

Does anyone have a suggestion for something I could look less slob-like in, but with the warmth factor of a fluffy dressing gown?

Tube controversial but I'd just get dressed.....

ncforschoolhelp · 15/03/2025 07:14

*maybe!

LuckysDadsHat · 15/03/2025 07:17

What am I reading.... pop up tents around desks etc..... just put the heating on! Wow! By the time you have bought everything that people have suggested cashmere jumpers etc..... you may as well have put the heating on!

I like to have a blanket to wrap around my legs.

I also wear this chunky acrylic cardigan from SilkFred (currently out of stock, but you can find similar online) which is naturally very warm due to the manmade fibres. I call it my "smart dressing gown" because it's acceptable to wear on camera/out of the house as a light coat alternative!

Definitely recommend a heated blanket or I was given the most amazing wool blanket last year and it’s fab. I tuck it under my feet and up to my waist so not visible on camera. It’s so warm! It’s by Ojbro vantfabrik - some are in the sale others full price at £120 - so lovely we have just got one for my MIL for autumn/winter. All the patterns have a meaning too.

My colleagues recommended sitting on a heated throw and wrapping it round your legs, I'm astounded it's a game changer for staying warm, I can only use it on the lowest setting, and frequently turn it off as I get too hot. It's not visible on camera and I wear my normal office wear

Maybe something like this?

Start the meeting with...
"It's a bit nippy today, where I am."

(You will probably have to come back later for the image...)

If I can get away with it, I currently DO look similar to this (particularly if I haven't waxed my top lip for the month). And I explain why. But given that I'm self employed, I've started to realise I might need to up my game a little bit, or the clients will start to think I'm a nutter and go elsewhere.

I'm dressed underneath. The dressing gown is over the top. In more ways than one 😆

Chucky knit cardigans, jumpers and fleeces are all the rage.

I've been looking for a really nice, LONG, chunky cardigan thing (needs to be long to keep my whole body warm) but haven't been able to find one. I'd like a black one, maybe cable knit.

Can you not just put the heat on for an hour or so for the occasional meeting?

Xiaoxiong · 15/03/2025 08:54

One of my colleagues showed me the inside of her gilet - it's heated with a rechargeable battery!!

I have a standing desk because I find that if I move around I don't get so cold.

AlisonDonut · 15/03/2025 08:55

Put some black tape over the camera and tell them it seems to be broken. And enjoy being warm.

Xiaoxiong · 15/03/2025 08:58

What a silly link - Google "cosy rolled edge cardigan" white company

Whyherewego · 15/03/2025 08:58

I wear a plain coloured fleece to keep me warm and I am on camera most of the time. If it was an interview or something where I needed to look smarter, I have a merino wool poncho which I can pull over my head and it drapes over whatever I'm wearing and creates a smart plain look. It's also v warm !

UNIdaughter · 15/03/2025 08:59

I came on to link to the Woolovers dressing gown that Delphiniumblue suggested. Size up to get a wrap around. Wash it as little as possible. It’s so warm even though it is very fine.

SlipperyLizard · 15/03/2025 09:01

I have a heated blanket that I wrap around my waist/lower body.

For those saying “put the heating on”, it would be pretty costly to heat a whole house all day just to keep one room warm!

Gilo2024 · 15/03/2025 09:02

heated Blanket over legs and slippers on. I found if my legs were warm, I was warm. Then layers on top (shirt, cardigan/jumper etc) include a scarf if needed.

GellerYeller · 15/03/2025 09:03

I have a long black chunky cardigan. Zara last season. It’s very heavy though. If you google ‘coatigan’ you may find more options.
WFH I do: thermal top, leggings, fingerless gloves, wool wrap around shoulders, thermal socks, normal clothes over the top, and a fleece blanket over my legs. Wheat bag and hot water bottle in winter. I don’t feel able to work without clothes and some makeup though.

BreakfastMeeting · 15/03/2025 09:05

I have a selection of shirts, mainly cord and men’s, that I wear over my jumper.
