Urgent help styling this dress

Tigerlilian · 13/03/2025 15:02

Please help me style this dress for a wedding.

I'm hoping to disguise my tummy as much as possible.

Think I shouldn't really wear a white jacket and don't want to wear a black one.

Have access to most High St shops and online if they have fast delivery options.

I'm hopeless at this so any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

I wouldn't wear a jacket with that dress. In a non wedding situation if I were cold I'd put a cardigan over it.

if you're wearing it to a wedding wear your smartest coat or outdoor jacket to get to the venue, and if it's a church, keep it on. Take off coat at the reception.

Tigerlilian · 14/03/2025 19:00

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle Thanks. Do you think a wrap would work? Trying to hide a big tummy!

I doubt that a wrap would hide your tummy unless you held it permanently draped over your stomach.

But trying to hide bits of me isn't a criteria when choosing an outfit.
And that's not because I'm tiny- I'm a 14 on a good day, 16 on a bad. I tend to just focus on the overall effect. I like clothes that are dramatic.

ColdHenrietta · 14/03/2025 19:57

Honestly, @Tigerlilian the point of that dress, and the element that draws attention, is the combination of the sleeves and the bodice. Putting a jacket over it would totally spoil the effect. As suggested above, just take your coat if necessary. But I’d be inclined to simply add something thermal plus a full length slip beneath the dress for the reception.

Again - if you’re wearing a nice dress, that is what people will notice.

Karen9099 · 14/03/2025 20:02

It's an awesome dress!

Tigerlilian · 14/03/2025 20:03

@ColdHenriettaI think the dress is not for me! And I should look again - it’s very difficult with my body shape as I just want to hide it all!
Thanks for the reply.

What’s the issue, exactly? Why does any part of you need hiding? What clothing size do you wear?

It’s a nice dress but if you feel you need to think again I’m sure posters can make suggestions.

ScribblingPixie · 14/03/2025 20:50

Something more empire line than pulled in at the waist?

The worst thing you can do if you're a bit larger around is to try and hide that area. Try an amazing headband or earrings. People see what their eyes are drawn to so if you wear something to disguise your waist people will automatically look at it.

KeepYaHeadUp · 14/03/2025 21:31

I know you said not a jacket, but I think an oversized / longline blazer could work really well with it, even draped over your shoulders.

It’s a lovely dress and I think with some decent Spanx / similar it will be really flattering, a dress like that looks great on someone with a bit of shape. So as others have said I wouldn’t worry about jackets etc, just wear the smartest one you have for any time you are outside

Cally102 · 14/03/2025 22:11

I like the dress and reviews are pretty positive. Only you can tell if it fits comfortably. I agree with spank and a coat.

Tigerlilian · 14/03/2025 22:15

I really appreciate all the advice. I’m quite tall but currently overweight but working on it.
I would be wearing a size 18 but my tummy is disproportionately larger than the rest of me.
from the front it looks ok but sideways not so good.
I’m a jeans and big shirt person usually so maybe I’m always going to not feel myself in a dress.

Get a spanx and take a jacket/blazer. Attract attention to your good points and people won't notice your tum.

tipsyraven · 14/03/2025 22:31

I ordered that dress and returned it as I found it very unflattering on, I think because of the neckline. Perhaps you might be better off with a v-neck which will draw the eye up and away from your middle.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 14/03/2025 22:50

You need to embrace not hide any part of you. I have a belly as most 40 somethings tend to but I still wear figure hugging pencil dresses.

the trouble with this dress though is that the line of the bodice will sit just above your tummy so yes may well emphasise what you don’t. I like the bodice but equally don’t I feel like everyone looks like that have slightly droopy boobies.

Mumandgrandma85 · 15/03/2025 06:42

I usually get my dresses from here have a look and get one that flows outwards that's what I do as I'm the same currently trying to tone tummy but after hysterectomy it seems to still be all wobbly lol

ColdHenrietta · 15/03/2025 06:55

Any particular reason you’re not keen on anywhere a little more up to date, @Mumandgrandma85? (I’m probably older than you - and would be flabbergasted if anyone suggested I should shop at Debenhams.)

Mumandgrandma85 · 15/03/2025 07:02

Have you looked there dresses are gorgeous they stock mango boohoo everything and I'm 39

Mumandgrandma85 · 15/03/2025 07:05

It’s a lovely dress, to think that it looks ok, when you are admittedly not a dress person to me means that you like it, just that it’s different to what you normally wear, if it’s the side view that you don’t like i would try again with some control underwear, you’d be surprised at the silhouette it gives, i’d also try a shawl. Good luck. X
