Suitcase for a luxury cruise

inneedofanewcase · 12/03/2025 09:01

DM is going on a luxury cruise for a milestone birthday with a friend, who moves in different circles and is well accustomed to luxury travel. She told DM to get a suitcase that is appropriate for the occasion. DM's suitcase is fine (to me) but obviously not good enough. I want to buy her one, but have no idea what is considered in/on trend in the luggage department. It doesn't have to be designer, and I don't want to spend massively as it's not going to get a lot of use. Maybe up to £250?
Of course it shouldn't matter and wouldn't to me, but DM doesn't want to look like the poor cousin beside her friend and her circle.
Any suggestions please? It needs to be a big one, up to 30kg.

Honestly I am so confused what the friend is insinuating!! You do not need a luxury suitcase (and if I'm honest £250 isn't going to buy you anything designer / fancy depending what the friend is suggesting). What suitcase is her friend taking? That might help with the suggestions.

I just use a normal matching suitcase set I bought in a regular shop! No one at the check in has ever eyeballed my suitcase or declared in unworthy of luxury travel. TKMax / Antler / Béis all do perfectly nice travel bags and they're in lovely colours.

did She mean ‘appropriately posh’, or did she really mean ‘appropriate for the type of holiday’ ?

a four wheel roller case is essential for cruises in my opinion - then you can roll it on and off yourself and not rely on the luggage system

is it possible you could borrow a case?

and it seems to
me that if this friend really meant ‘posh’ , your mum is going to have a lot
more to worry about than her case: cocktail dresses, full length dresses, etc, if it is a Cunard cruise. Is this ‘friend’ going to be constantly critical?

inneedofanewcase · 12/03/2025 09:36

Appropriate meaning high end looking. Yes, friend often does look down on DM, but that's another thread! DM is sorted for the clothing, it's a cruise that is exclusively aimed at a certain profession, so not as formal apparently.
Yes had a bit of a google and cases coming in at £3k! Not the kind I'm going for, I think I'll get her a matching set.

I’ve been on a lot of cruises and this one honestly baffles me! Nobody sees your suitcases as you don’t wheel them onto the ship yourself. They get delivered to your stateroom and then stored under the bed. Your mum’s friend is being entirely unreasonable but if you want to get her something then Costco often do reasonably priced sets, and TK Maxx is also worth a look.

Parker231 · 12/03/2025 09:47

On a cruise your suitcase goes under the bed or in a wardrobe - no one sees it and an expensive case rarely lasts any longer than one from a chain store. Don’t waste money on something no one will notice.

Soontobe60 · 12/03/2025 09:50

I think your DM has got bigger problems with her ‘friend’ than the suitcase she uses.
Her friend is a snob of the highest order.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 12/03/2025 11:05

Wow, I'd be telling her friend to bugger off!

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 12/03/2025 11:09

If her friend is like this about a largely unseen item, what the heck is she like about dressing for dinner, etc? Delusions of grandeur.

Chuchoter · 12/03/2025 11:20

What about this one -

Cheap as chips and looks smart

It isn't the cruise per se she wants/needs new luggage for. They are having some sort of VIP experience in the airport and DM doesn't want to be the only one with mismatched luggage. She hasn't used a large suitcase for years, she has a nice cabin bag case thing but doesn't want to turn up looking less than compared to the others.

If they're doing VIP, do you know at which airport? At Manchester for example you barely see your luggage, they whisk it away from you and it's delivered to the aircraft, you just have your hand luggage with you.

Chewbecca · 12/03/2025 12:45

We use American Tourister cases which are good and within your budget. I would get the one which is regular sized (so generally accommodates the standard 23kg) but has the expandable zip so you can add more if you are driving or coming home in a higher class cabin.

We did one, can’t remember which airport where your luggage was lifted from your car for you and the next time you saw it was in your cabin.

valder · 12/03/2025 12:54

I'd ask Mrs Bucket. She'll know.

Sorry OP but that has to be one of the maddest posts I've seen on here.

angelinawasrobbed · 16/03/2025 11:39

Borrow a luggage set if you can and put the cash towards a good handbag, which her cruise-mates will definitely see more of...

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/03/2025 11:49

Just take a suitcase surely?

DingDingRound3 · 16/03/2025 11:54

Aww your poor DM, that sounds stressful. I have felt ‘less than’ before and it’s not nice. Hopefully you getting her some matching luggage will help her feel the part.

<her friend is a fucking twat>

Dearover · 16/03/2025 11:57

Please don't let your mum worry about such things. Nobody else will give a flying fig. They are all too busy worrying about where they've put their passports and where the toilets are at the airport.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/03/2025 12:00

If she has her luggage disembarked then she;ll need to put this outside her door at 5pm on the last night , so keep out her evening clothes , any essentials and some clothes for the journey home .
And TopTip make sure you put an AirTag/luggage belt /ribbon or similar (or all 3) if her case is grey or black as every other case will be . She'll end up looking up/down rows of cases ( they're put into a group - you are given a colour / number to disembark)

We did our own disembark last cruise as it was DH/DD/me and a short cruise so not over loaded with bags .

beAsensible1 · 16/03/2025 12:02

Swiss, beis or just a nice matching set from tk maxx.

or is she suggesting like a rimowa ?

minnienono · 16/03/2025 12:06

Ignore, nobody sees your suitcase! If it’s U.K. to U.K. (no fly) I’d actually opt for 2 medium suitcases matching but Argos have some nice ones anyway

eg https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3103612

minnienono · 16/03/2025 12:10

Do get her to check her weight and bag quantity carefully if flying as I’ve had either one or 2 23kg bags allotted for fly cruises, my medium suitcase can fit this amount (just over in fact). I personally don’t bother with a rolling cabin bag instead I have a nice large handbag for flying plus a canvas bag (important) because on the last evening you will not have your suitcase, I slip the canvas bag contents into my suitcase after disembarking before heading to the airport

What about this one OP, lots of celebrities have been seen with it and its within your budget.

I would get a smart looking hard shell case. I do like a nosy at luggage along the corridors. Last time we took a couple of soft sided IT cases
that are admittedly well-travelled and they did look a bit sad and saggy. I’ll take my hard shell next time.
