Intimate hair removal if I’m too scared to get a bikini wax

icebearforpresident · 09/03/2025 19:23

Apart from a couple of waxes to ‘tidy up’ my bikini line (basically make sure nothing is sticking out my swim wear when I’m on holiday) I’ve never really bothered doing anything with my public hair. When I was 18 I shaved it all off at the front when I got a bit too carried away with a razor but didn’t go near any intimate areas and it itched so much growing back in I’ve never done it again.

For various reasons I’m thinking I would like to be more ‘groomed’ down there, not totally bald but definitely trimmed.

A full on wax, especially around my genitals makes me want to clamp my legs shut but is it the only option? I’m guessing removal creams would be unsafe in that area and I certainly don’t want to go any where near it with a razor.

Ingrown hairs....

A lot of A&E time with genital abscesses from ingrown hairs after developing a Staph infection.

Staph bacterium live on the skin usually and do nothing.... but a combination of micro abrasions from shaving and the removal of the healthy microbiome (your public hair) means that staph can take hold. Potentially dangerous. We have pubes for a reason.

Maybe I’m just old (I’m not that old really mid 30s) but I’ve never understood this trend of taking it all off. I’m sorry I’m not trying to be rude like someone above was I’m just curious why? Does it feel better during intimacy or something. I understand tidying up the edges when it’s swimsuit season because no one wants their pubes peeking out on display.

I don’t have much experience on the topic but I would say others have given good advice:)

See I actually think it might be because you're younger, not older? I'm a decade older than you and credit growing up as a teenager in the 90s with my complicated internal battle between porn influenced female aesthetics and feminist principles. In my experience women younger than me are much more varied in their approach and more of them are confident enough to leave their pubes.

Obviously fashion is doing it's damndest to counteract any of this confidence in younger women by providing them with extraordinarily skimpy swimwear.

Maybe, but to claim “pubes are there for a reason” is a myth. This suggests that the human body was designed, it was not! It evolved. If everything had a reason, what about eyebrows, leg hair, men’s facial hair or indeed the spleen?

l’ve been hair free since l was about 15, l’m in my 40s now and never had any problems in that area.

Hair removal in ancient times was also practiced to deter pubic lice.

But none of this answers the OP’s queries and is a separate debate.

Thank you all again for the input, I’ve ordered some woohoo and will report back on how I find it.

The whys for me (and I know no one was asking me as such) are two fold. One, as I’m getting older I find I just feel a bit sweatier and more unruly down there and while there’s no odour it can feel itchy in the evenings despite showering daily. I’m nearly 40 and assuming it’s all related to perimenopause. So I’m hoping some maintenance might help. Two, quite frankly, is the sex element. DH has never expressed a preference either way but I’m pretty confident he’ll find it more attractive and I think it would help me feel sexier as well.

See if you can find someone that uses Lycon or hard wax, instead of warm wax and strips, I find much more comfortable for an all off, but not everyone does it.

Good luck OP. Hopefully summer is on its way and as a fellow and long term “bald eagle” l think you will find it much more comfy in the warm weather.

If Woowoo doesn’t do the job (it’s very mild) give one of the other options a go!

I’m older than you (early 40s) and I hate hair down there. I don’t think it feels better but I suppose I wouldn’t know because I have always waxed but for me I feel much cleaner especially on my period.

OP - the only thing I would say is for me waxing lasts longer than removal creams - not sure if that is a factor for you. If you do it regularly - start small - I get mine done every 6 weeks you get used to it.

edited to say: if you do decide to go for waxing find somewhere that uses Lycon wax as for me it’s more gentle and hurts less.

Agree on the period comments. Far easier to manage. And wee as well.

Every 4 weeks works best for me with a wax. More or less first of every month makes it easy to work and for me to book in, unless she or l are away.

Interesting I never considered it because I’m too young 😂. I was going off what I see when I’m in the swimming or gym changing rooms. Everyone that looks to be in their early 20s is always completely bare down there

Oistinemup · 15/03/2025 12:17

I had laser hair removal many years ago on my bikini line - so very few stragglers to worry about. If i feel the rest of it is getting unruly I get the Wahl bread trimmer out and go over the hairy area without a guard on. So it's not shaved off, but is barely there. No itchy regrowth that way

Really?

I'm in my early 50s and have never had an 'internal battle' re pubes. They are just my pubic hairs, don't muck about with them, no good will come from it!

Eyebrows stop the rain and sweat getting into your eyes, don't they?

icebearforpresident · 01/04/2025 19:22

I’m back - later than planned but as promised.

I did indeed but WooWoo and tried it a week or so ago. I ended up removing all of it, I planned to try and tidy it and shape it a bit but quickly realised it was way too tricky to get it looking even so just went for it. Zero stinging, even in intimate areas, and a week later have had no itching which has amazed me. Wishing I had done it years ago.

Thanks to all of you who recommended it!

I’m pleased you are sorted OP. I’m not surprised you found any “topiary” options too difficult. And complex rather than a clean sweep as it were.

l think you’ll find things much more comfy in the warmer weather. x

Always someone bringing some paedo element into it 🙄

Do your hairless arm pits make you look prepubescent? Or do you rock a hairy pit?

What about your leg hair?

Do flat chested women only attract paedos?

What about women with small breasts (not totally flat, hardly any woman is 100% flat)?

Thanks for answering, a removal cream would probably be my preference but I’ve not been able to find one that explicitly says it’s ok to use in intimate areas. Woowoo actually popped up as an ad on my instagram a while ago but I’m always hesitant to buy from instagram ads, especially for something like this so appreciate the recommendation.

As for waxing, a California wax is probably what I have in mind but I’d be starting from scratch - my last bikini wax was when I went on holiday almost 3 years ago.

Veet do one specifically for bikini line. I haven’t tried it but I have seen it on sale in Boots.

It’s very late and I misunderstood this, reading “bread trimmer” I thought you meant some kind of electric bread knife… wasn’t sure whether you were joking or had the dexterity of Edward scissorhands.

Moveoverdarlin · 29/06/2025 01:12

I find hair removal creams better than anything for the bikini area. I use the Veet one specifically for the bikini area. Once a year before my summer hols I take the whole lot off. Put it everywhere, wait 10 mins, wash it off. Couldn’t be easier.

I’m howling at this. It does say bread trimmer. I’m remembering those lethal, really loud electric knives everyone had in the 80s.

Exactly the image I had in mind.

tipsandtoes · 29/06/2025 14:00

Had it all lasered off. Wasn’t pleasant but now I have nothing but a few thin fine pale hairs. Life down almost .
