DD (10) has upper lip hair

Cat3rpillar · 05/03/2025 21:32

Can't bring myself to call it a moustache but that's what it is. She's becoming understandably very self conscious about it and is wanting to do something about it but I don't know how to go about it most effectively. It's very fine but dark hair that sometimes you can't see at all depending on the light.

Is it going to get worse as she enters puberty?

Definitely look into options for hair removal. She's only young but if you help her get into a routine, she won't ever be teased for having a moustache. Kids can be so cruel.

Reading this with interest. I have tried every possible method on my tache over the years and have basically given up at this point.

Hair removal cream burns my skin, and any type of razor (including the one linked upthread) gives me ingrown hairs that cause huge welts/scars on my face/neck - no matter how diligent I am with aftercare. Threading and tweezing both cause a bumpy rash for weeks.

Waxing seemed to be the best option but the last time I did it, I ended up with perioral dermatitis that spread around my mouth and across my cheeks. Nothing shifted it - not zinc, not hydrocortisone, not even antibiotics from my GP. EIGHT MONTHS I spent looking like The Joker Sad

It finally cleared up last May and I'm scared to try anything else after that.

I've had this since early teens. I just use a bit of Veet silky fresh for sensitive skin for a couple of minutes then wipe it off with loo roll. I do this every few weeks and it is really quick. I think the one I use is for legs but I just use it for a couple of minutes instead.

Lwrenn · 06/03/2025 19:34

I bleached my moustache at high school and my best friend noticed and immediately gave me the nick name hulk hogan. The wee bastard.
I say no to bleach from personal experience.

Icebreakhell · 06/03/2025 22:29

If you can afford one I’d get a Philips lumea

Beware. If you shave it off it will return darker, bushier and thicker.

No it won't

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 07/03/2025 02:15

Get her hormones checked at the doctor. Facial hair can be a sign of PCOS, in which case, the sooner she is treated, the better.

Gemstonebeach · 07/03/2025 03:25

Hair removal cream. I have a blonde mo and remove it that way as it is visible.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 07/03/2025 04:08

10 is too young for this, too young for facial hair and too young to be having to scrape razors across her face or apply caustic creams.

I was going to mention this. My sister had teenage years of misery - because of being hairy as a result of PCOS. Proper treatment made a great difference.

Cat3rpillar · 07/03/2025 07:31

@amusedbush that sounds awful!!

@selffellatingouroborosofhate I will bear that in mind and see how things develop. She's quite olive-skinned unlike either of her parents but there's southern European genes in our family so it could be related to that as well. I've also had a tache all my life, although not quite as early as her, but without PCOS issues.

@Lwrenn yes, I used to bleach mine as well and I often thought it made it more obvious!

Don't do anything akin to shave it. Despite the "no it doesn't" crew, it will look worse as it grows back. A few people aren't affected by it but most people are.

Bleach gives her a blonde tache. Veet is alright but not kind on skin.

As soon as she can get lasered, get lasered. I was a hairy person, pale olive skin and black hair and I suffered with daily hair removal issues (modelled and had to be hair free) and the shaving, waxing, plucking, ingrown hairs, rashes, was awful.

I discovered proper lasering at 32 and I could honestly cry at not knowing about it before.

DD will be getting it at the earliest safe opportunity.

This is such a crock, I can’t believe people still believe this.

Thanks @LePetitMaman

10 is absolutely not too young for facial hair. Many of us are speaking from experience. I had it from a ridiculously young age and don't have PCOS or any other underlying hormone issues. I'm not saying don't look into it but it's incredibly misleading to say her DD is too young for facial hair.

I go down the threading route and it has worked for me for years - and the more you do the less often you have to do it. But I'm intrigued by the flawless touch/ Nu options. Are they plucking the hairs or 'shaving' them? They look super handy.

As an aside do some research into laser and IPL treatments. They're a wonder for a lot of women but certain skin tones and hair types will make it less affective.

I was always so ashamed and I'm sorry your DD is starting to feel self-conscious. Only in recent years have I started to realise that an awful lot of women go through the same thing so maybe it would be good to remind her that she is not alone and it's way more common than she realises. Usually women with body/ facial hair also come with thick luscious hair on their head which is a lovely positive way of looking at it!

This is what we have!! I refuse to allow my children to go through what I went through.

QuickMember · 07/03/2025 13:14

I read about “finishing touch flawless” in a previous thread. I’ve ordered for my own ten year old as not sure she can withstand Jolene bleach! (Have memories of that as a child myself).

The hair is there whether she wants it or not so bit puzzled how anyone can determine she is too young for it!

As many others of South Asian background have said, it is extremely common for girls with our heritage to have this from the age of 7/8. I have no doubt my DC is going to become conscious about it at a similar age and I plan to discuss the options with her and help her safely remove it should she want that. I also intend to pay for her to have laser hair removal as soon as she is old enough if she would like it so she doesn't experience the discomfort I did

Tell me more about this. I've been thinking about it for my daughter. Might wait for winter (southern hemisphere) as she is currently tanned with sun-bleached leg hairs. She has commented on her hairy legs a few times.

Epidote · 07/03/2025 14:58

Pre teen super lip hair is very common. It kicks out close to the hormonal revolution. I used jolene and cream and burnt my skin. I started to use cold wax for a few years until I was old enough to use hot wax without burning myself.
The monobrow was another thing I remember. They were two brows with dark brown peach fuss in the middle. Very pale skin and dark hair is a hell of combination when you are pre teen.
Now I'm fighting revel whiskers.

Cat3rpillar · 07/03/2025 15:42

@suki32 yes, she has beautiful dark hair and a lot of it!
