Spring 2025 - Which jackets? Which shoes?

BBQHulaHoops · 01/03/2025 12:04

Please advise wise and stylish women of Mumsnet!

I really need a new jacket. I no longer suit blazer type jackets and no longer fit in my denim jacket - so what to wear? Everything is so boxy or oversized and I am not keen to make myself look any larger. I love quilted jackets and the kimono style but I look like an upholstered armchair in them as they hang down from the shoulder, but most jackets that are waisted hit in the wrong place because I have a long back.

This is most lovely thing I have seen so far but it's so expensive: https://www.toa.st/collections/womens-coats-jackets/products/garment-dyed-cotton-linen-neat-jacket-slate and I am not sure how well it would look over my DDs. (what I would really like is someone to tell me that it is a great investment piece and worth the money and it will be 0.3p per wear for the rest of time).

Additionally I am sick to death of always wearing chunky boots, but I struggle to find something a bit more elegant and am not good at proper lady shoes. I have a tendency to wear Dms in winter, trainers sometimes and birkies all summer.

I saw some clogs with heels - but I fear my penchant for ugly shoes is leading me astray. What are the alternatives right now?

My style is a sort of cheap version of Toast/deconstracted linen and layers/artsy older lady, but a bit more urban. Size 14-16 on top with broad sholders and big boobs. I just want to look a bit more put together, less clumpy and dumpy with giant clown feet!

Those black ballet flats are nice, but they're so bad for your feet! Are there any with more of a padded sole to give you some support? ( sorry, it's my issue, but pp have had foot problems cos of shoes like these! )

I am worrying about that as I have never been able to wear pumps. I am now being advertised to on Mumnset these vivia shoes which seem to claim some kind of support. https://www.vivaia.com/item/square-toe-mary-jane-margot-mary-jane-p_10020155.html?gid=10027482

I’ve just ordered the asos one in khaki, looks more like light grey? https://www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-oversized-washed-barn-jacket-with-leather-look-collar-in-khaki/prd/207508444?_gl=1nonwkb_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQiAoJC-BhCSARIsAPhdfSjA3epL-HnzGpURcfMSi0OBkOBhkDOsg4Isr4h6NkN7AZ1WoqQz_OYaAp_uEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&gbraid=0AAAAADqFjOBUIRILceVJ7KW_TRwZYpXhu#ctaref-more%20colours%20swatches&featureref1-more%20colours%20swatches

I wear an awful lot of trainers for shoes, different coloured adidas, Nikes, etc. I also have some black Birkenstock Mary Jane’s which I love

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Birkenstock-Mantova-Womens-Mary-Jane/dp/B01N79W1WL

got them a couple of years ago and they’re very versatile

Buy the clogs you like - vogue says so SS25

I really like this although I haven't seen it in RL.

I have a slate grey herringbone version of the Zara jacket linked to above. It is hands down the most useful item of clothing I've bought in years. Annoyingly, mine was £ 30 cheaper. If I has a spare £120 ...

Hoping to try the Reiss one on tomorrow but tbh I think I just feel awkward in jackets generally. I need it to be really cold (so I can get out my puffer) or warm enough to just wear a cardi 🤦🏻‍♀️

@BBQHulaHoops What do you think of these? I’ve always found Mint Velvet shoes to be very comfy

I bought that Toast jacket last year OP and unless anything has changed it's very flimsy and unlined. i love that design but it felt really cheaply made for me (and it's not cheap!) Bought online and returned.

As well as the Whistles ones I also have this in the chamomile and love it. The colour is nicer imo than on the website:

How can I have spent all morning looking and not spotted that?! Thank you!

OP - dunno if you have M&S sparks account thing . But I've just got email with 20% off until the 5th March x

Flamingoknees · 03/03/2025 08:27

I bought 2 utility jackets with draw string waists last year. I wear open, with the drawstring pulled to create shape at the waist, but not fastened. I have tan, and black, and a similar green one from Zara. Very useful.

Shetlands · 03/03/2025 08:38

You might like this jacket - great price too!

I like the shape of this denim jacket (I don't think denim jackets should be very expensive, they're about the same quality if you spend £30 or £130)

Birkenstock does Mary Janes:

Under £50 from Zara: too short? Would boobage be an issue?

Not wild about the fabric, but wondered if it would be a useful look to consider. Love the Toast jacket you posted. About 18 years ago M&S offered a fabulous range of linen on summer and I bought a Mao-collared black linen jacket. Still in my wardrobe, still being used 20 times a year. Try it on and if it flatters you, consider investing. If not, nothing lost.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/03/2025 13:22

Love the Poetry jacket.

RobinEllacotStrike · 03/03/2025 13:24

I have one of these - it might be too boxy for you. I was unsure of the shape/style but its become my fav thing to wear. Its oversized, mid weight and when I wear it everyone comments on it - I meet many people wearing the jacket as so many people comment on it, ask where it is from etc.

If you don't want it oversized size down.

I don’t like trenches either. Too much swishy material & I still feel cold. And awkward.

The cropped trenches around at the moment are fab. You'll still be cold though. 😅
