Tips for long haul flights

I've got a 13 hour flight coming up soon and I'd love tips of what works for you when travelling beauty or anything else wise. Also, what do you tend to wear. I usually wear long dresses when I fly but end up getting quite cold. I'm wondering whether to go for some comfortable loungewear. I'll be leaving from the Uk to get to around 28'

This is a good thread to have a trawl through about what to wear: Long haul comfy but not PJs | Mumsnet
Bring wired headphones so that you can plug them into the entertainment system, and download some movies onto your phone/tablet/laptop in case nothing takes your fancy.

I went and got a length of warm fabric that was just the right size to be an oversized scarf, a lovely shawl or a full sized blanket. Hemmed it and I take it on all flights. It doesn't take a baggage allowance place and I'm toasty on the flight.

How do you wear a dress with flight socks ?

DeftJadeLeader · 25/02/2025 02:06

Wear loose and comfortable clothes

wondabar · 25/02/2025 20:49

Great tip about headphones and shawl. I love looking at Trinny's flight reels but everything she has seems to cost a fortune .Does anyone use any lovely reasonably-priced beauty products that they can recommend for using on flights?

Lightweight trousers, socks, trainers, lightweight cropped top type bra, Tshirt and hoodie. Neck pillow and eye mask.
take toothbrush and toothpaste, wet wipes, hair brush and deodorant in hand luggage and a clean set of underwear, flip flops and top in case your hold bag doesn’t arrive.

Currently trying to solve the “what to fly in” issue! Have ordered about 400 pairs of “loungewear” bottoms. Most were too thick, too baggy, too much fabric (so made me look giant) or felt like they would go baggy.
Ipad won’t let me post links, but I finally settled on a pair from The White Company, made with cashmere. Pricy, but super comfy and very flattering. Also a wide leg pair from next in a leopard print. Didn’t expect to love those but I do. Next also have some really nice Jersey Ponte trousers but they only had them in long in my size and they are about a mile long! Only £38 so definitely worth a look.

Beauty wise I travel with Liz Earle travel size cleanse, tone and moisturise if it’s a night flight, so I can take my face off. Usually pick up a mini dry shampoo at the airport because flying makes my hair go weirdly greasy.
Comb, socks, lipsil, toothbrush & toothpaste, loads of water, a warm jumper and an AirTag in my luggage.

I’m flying long haul soon and am preparing my cabin bag. I’ve got the following so far:

single face wipe
eye drops
deodorant
toothbrush/small tube toothpaste (I’m not a fan of what the airline provides)
moisturiser
eye mask
ear buds
ear plugs
book
kindle
ipad
chargers
powerbank
spare t shirt
spare knickers
spare socks
a pair of Virgin pj’s from a previous flight
Kalms herbal sleeping tablets
hand sanitizer
small pack of wet wipes

I’ll be wearing black yoga pants, a t shirt and a zip up hoodie with socks/Vans

Kendodd · 25/02/2025 21:32

is it overnight or daytime?

Poppyfield15 · 25/02/2025 22:02

Wide leg trousers drag on toilet floors.

Katrinawaves · 25/02/2025 22:23

Assuming you aren’t going straight into a work meeting after you land, I tend to travel in yoga pants, with a soft bra, vest top and jumper on top. Just before takeoff I change socks for compression socks and shoes for travel slippers. I have a soft pashmina and a travel pillow which is actually a blanket folded into a small pillow case in case it gets very cold.

if I do have to go straight into work I have a hard wearing suit from Dai which is designed to be crease resistant and travels pretty well and looks ok though isn’t the most comfortable or stylish item ever and I pack a spare top so can change into something crease free when I land.

For toiletries I use travel size versions of toothpaste, hand cream and moisturiser and a lip balm. Pack a few healthy snacks too and a usb charger for your phone and tablet as most plane seats now have charging points.

Daytime flight there and overnight back. I was looking at getting some of the Me + Em travel trousers from Vinted but been put off them by the comment about long trousers on washroom floors! I have a Turtl travel pillow which is very comfortable. Can anyone recommend nice hydrating face masks to put on during the flight? I don't have a work meeting - straight to the hotel and out for dinner when we get there so I hope to be rested!

Airfly, plugs into the entertainment system and then you can use your EarPods or wireless earbuds.

Noise cancelling earphones or earplugs if you want to sleep. Eye mask.

Don't go to the bathroom in your socks. Wear comfortable layers.

I take handcream, antibacterial wipes to wipe down my tray table. Lip balm.

Water, yes it's expensive in the airport which is criminal but I take at least 3 ltrs to drink inflight.

Snacks

I put my lip balm, earbuds/ear plugs, cables etc in one little bag so I can put it in the seat pocket and not have to get up and down.

If you've got an iPad download all the things you want to watch so you have plenty of choice. IFE choices aren't always great.

If it's a daytime flight I pay for the WiFi so I can do other stuff as well as read and watch tv.

Femalefootyfan · 26/02/2025 12:31

Airports usually have free water fountains available to top up your own water bottle.

MiddleAgedDread · 26/02/2025 16:06

and sunglasses in your hand luggage if you're going somewhere hot and sunny, i forgot once and nearly burnt my retinas when I stepped off the plane!!

Sarkyandcynical · 26/02/2025 16:28

Sweaty Betty Gary (or whatever the new version is) are good. The cuffed hem means they don’t drag on the loo floors. Also layers on the top half. It can really vary between too hot and too cold on flights so a blanket/scarf/throw is a good shout.

Make sure you have a power bank if you’re using a phone or iPad as some of the older planes don’t always have working USBs - the last BA flight I was on I could charge my iphone but it didn’t work for my iPad.

wondabar · 27/02/2025 08:44

These are all great - thank you. I saw an amazing White Company cashmere cable hoodie on Vinted but by the time I tried to buy it, it had already been snapped up. Maybe someone on this post Wink

Would you really wear a face mask in public? I’d be mega self conscious about that! Also the washbasins on flights are tiny so it would be a total nightmare to wash it off when you needed to. Even a sheet mask which didn’t need rinsing off would look odd whilst you were wearing it!

Lobelia123 · 27/02/2025 09:55

Long flights are notorious for drying out your skin and leaving you with that tired grey washed out complexion when you land. I highly recommend taking a sheet face mask in your hand luggage, and then once youve eaten and are settling in to sleep or get through a couple of movies, put it on and let the serum soak into your skin. I leave it on for as long as I can - hours even. It does wonders to keep some moisture in your skin. Doesnt have to be a very expensive one - a cheapo 3 for 2 special from Boots will do the trick.

I found a nearly new double width long cashmere scarf in a charity shop a few years ago. It goes on all my holidays and is SO useful. Keeps me warm on flights and journey to and from airports. Cosy on plane. Can roll up like a pillow. Used like a blanket on plane and in hotels if a bit chilly. All for £3.50. My best charity shop find ever.
