please help.

I have DH's grandma's funeral this week, and am in a slight panic about clothes for the elder two girls and me.

there is no 'dress code', just something in keeping with the sombre mood, but for my two elder girls, they have nothing.

I don;t really think they need to wear black, but smart is needed obviously......but.....also something they will and can wear again.

they are not dress wearing girls, both prefer jeans or dancing type clothing. the last smart thing they both had was for a wedding and was very trendy.....not suitable now......and those outfits were hard enough to find.

I don;t want to traipse around, and I don;t want to take them either (I know sizes etc to fit so they won;t need to try on!).

please can you help track something down and tell me the bast places to try......budget is not huge, about £50 for them both maximum please.

so.....no dresses, no white and navy in one outfit (school colours....they won;t wear it again), and nothing that will look like waitresses or as tho they are in a type of school uniform.

DD1 is in age 13 clothes, or if poss, sz4 adult.

DD2 is in age 11 clothes.

now me.........help.......all my stuff that would be ok is in sz 10 or 12....I am now an 8 or 6 depending on shop. I am 5ft 4 too, so don;t carry loong well.

I cannot wear heels anymore either, so even if the clothes fit, I couldn;t wear them as most of my old stuff was long to go over heels.....obviously now would drown me!!!

budget of £50 - £100....I have some ballet style flats in black already, or more shoes will be needed too if they don;t go.

I know that this may seem trivial, stressing about clothing for a funeral......it should be easy....black! but I want to know that we are as turned out as grandma would have been and she was one very smart tidy lady who took great care in how she looked and was always commmenting on how we looked and how it made her so proud.

I think any dark colour would be appropriate for the dds tbh - purple, dark green, brown (black is hard to find, esp. in summer).

Peapodlovescuddles · 10/05/2008 17:48

Try primark, lots of white/cream/black blousey things and black/black and white print skirts, very cheap and the tops could be worn again with jeans. Wear a black cardigan over the top, saw some today for £6 or a cotton blazer in black for you £12. Lots of black ballet flats/pumps for adults.
Kids section is gettting better too.
Hope you find something.
One thing though, would your girls wear the clothes again or would they not like the connotations? I only ask because I can still remember me and my sisters point blank refusing to wear the (very expensive but thats a whole other story)dresses my mother bought us for our grandfather's funeral because they made us feel so sad.

EffiePerine · 10/05/2008 17:49

Do you want black/dark colours?

if not, this is nice and reasonably plain

Psychomum5 · 10/05/2008 17:52

oh, peapod, not thought of that....them maybe not wearing it again for that reason.

ok....primark is a maybe if I cannot get exat items to search for on here.

I like the miss selfridge dress for me, and to put a white vest under will make it suitable....along with the flats I already have.
that shape is more 'me', plus it is short sleeved and I can add to it, or take away, depending on heat etc.....

girls......eeek......

Psychomum5 · 10/05/2008 17:55

effie...I like, but not for this...and probably not ever as teeny prints on me, altho I like, seem not to like me IYGWIM.

Flame would tell you about my attempt to go for a pretty print dress once.....was utterly hidious on me, yet lovely in the picture....I am not good it seems.

www.george.com/browse/womenswear/g21/product-10328/ for dd1
there's not much on the george website but the clothes are reasonable and you should be able to get to an asda reasonably easily, they go down to a 4 for your 13 year old too. Tesco or sainsbury's could have something suitable also.

ChippyMinton · 10/05/2008 18:27

an idea for the girls - black/white print skirts & white tops, plus a cardi/shrug in their choice of colour (maybe one grandmother liked them in?)? Would go with your other DD's black/red outfit.

Psychomum5 · 10/05/2008 20:22

DD1 wants smart shorts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HELP (please)

and for me.....DH says dress....he does not like any of the options

((DD2 ....no idea....she on a scouting comp that she still wanted to do, so we have let her go.....I am hoping that the skirt will be ok tho)

New look 915? They might do 3/4 or knee length tailored shorts, tbh I think the short short ones you can get might not be suitable for a funeral...
Peacocks? www.peacocks.co.uk/Products/Womens_Catalogue/Trousers/Shorts/STONE_BELTED_CITY_SHORT_-13383152.html maybe with a black shirt? something along these lines? www.peacocks.co.uk/Products/Womens_Catalogue/Tops/Shirts_and_Blouses/BLACK_AND_WHITE_POLKA_DOT_BELTE DSHIRT-14896010.html
perhaps?

Peapodlovescuddles · 11/05/2008 10:43

maybe you could build an outfit up from some of these? www.peacocks.co.uk/Products/Shop_the_Latest_Looks/The_Hamptons

Psychomum5 · 11/05/2008 10:47

oooh.....yes....that looks ideal.....will have to look out for that.

DD1 said that she wanted a belted blouse too, so if I can find something like waht you have just linked to, then she will b sorted.

DD2 I think is sorted....skirt and pretty blouse and a tiny black cardie is what I am headng for for her.

me............I think I will need to eat lots and pile on an extra size to get into the dress I have((not sure how, cannot eat at the moment))

OP posts:
Beetroot · 11/05/2008 10:49

somewhere like New Look?

this

Psychomum5 · 11/05/2008 10:55

beety......I am not sure that shirt dresses suit me.....tried one before (I do like them), and it made me look odd.

maybe with my new glasses I will see me clearer and not look so odd!!!

OP posts:
Beetroot · 11/05/2008 10:57

I know what you mena - they don't suit me either.

not sure hwat style you want - skirt short long?

I ususally wear black trousers. H&M have really nice linen wide leg one s for 20 quid. side fastening then vest adn fited jacket

Psychomum5 · 11/05/2008 11:04

right then....I would like a dress....

I have a liking for lowish cut dresses, but it does need to be suitable for FIL (he made inapropriate comments at xmas when I wore the other dress.....told me my boobs had shrunk too much (it wasn;t a nasty comment, more a shock as he is so shy normally!!!.....I just cannot get that comment out of my head and don;t want to think he will be thinking it at the church.....he probably won't, I am just projecting it into something far bigger than what it is.....).

I also cannot wear heels anymore since the second car accident......my hips to injured, so it also needs to be a dress that looks good in flats.

short sleeves, or sleeveless that I can then team with a small cardie.

shortish skirt is ok, but again, needs to be ok in flats.

I am unsure as to what suits me anymore tho as since I have lost weight my shape has changed (well, boobs and bum and hips shrunk, confuses me)....I have a waist to......more a boyish straight waist, but still....I do go in.....tis kind of strange!

ChippyMinton · 11/05/2008 14:27

principles £££ though.

principles again

Psychomum5 · 11/05/2008 14:35

I love that bardot dress.......unsure if it will look ok on me, but it may.

will ask DH when he gets home.

plus, the bardot dress should look good in flats too!

OP posts:
ChippyMinton · 11/05/2008 15:10

yes, i thought the flat would work

Flame · 11/05/2008 21:22

@ the last pretty print dress!

I have never seen anything look quite so bad

I will click all these links later/in the morning so I have an idea what we are looking for.

Flame · 11/05/2008 21:23

The principles again link I think is more you - I thnk the bardot, as nice as it is, may make you have stumpy legs

KristinaM · 11/05/2008 21:30

ok - your budget is fairly modest ( £50 - 100 for three of you) and you have no time and two fussy teenagers

if i were you i woudl look in their wardrobes for anything that might do eg trousres or even school skirt or school type white blouse, then get a couple of things to go with it. like cardi & ballet flats as others have suggested

no one will really care what you wear to a funeral anyway, as long as you look reasonably respectable and respectful

Psychomum5 · 11/05/2008 21:56

budget is up.....MIL gave me £50 for the girls, and I also then have my budget on top, now just for me....well......ish. (also got to add in some balloons for the funeral out of mine)

girls don;t need cardies, they have some....well, DD1 does, DD2 has a white one, which in all honesty, if teamed with black will be fine for her.

DD1 wants a belted blouse....seems that the longish shorts that I got her last year may still be fitting her (I took them in then....they will fit if I let them out now IYGWIM).

DD2 is umming and ahhinh about skirt now(she is sat here with me!)

arghhhhh

me...I am not fussy ()....I just need a dress that will suit, in black (MIL said black for certain tonight!), that fits and is ok for flats.
