Foundation that won't just settle in my pores!

Fitzcarraldo353 · 20/02/2025 12:02

Hi
Looking for any recommendations from you lovely, knowledgeable posters!

I currently use Charlotte Tilbury's Beautiful Skin Foundation but lately I've found it just sits on my face and in my pores (or around my glasses on my nose) in a way it didn't used to. I do like it's coverage but need to find something new.

So does anyone know anything that fits this brief that I could try? Vital info:

  • I'm 48.
  • Skin is good I'd say. Fairly normal, not too dry or oily. Use serum, spf and and always remove make up well so I do take reasonable care of it.
  • Looking for medium coverage
  • Usually go for something that gives glow but open to suggestion if that's not a good idea at my age
  • White, pale skin. Usually use something that's in the very lightest few shades of any foundation, and probably with cooler/slightly pink tones.
  • Have tried this foundation over primers or not, and with setting spray or not. Same result.

What do you all use that absorbs and stays in place? Thanks.

I love the Trinny BFF foundation myself.

I find application process helps as well. As I've got older, I've had to be a lot more careful about application. ensure skin is moisterised and smooth. Then these days I use either a beauty blender or I've recently been using a big brush which I've smooshed ALL the foundation into and then apply.

I’m 47 and had to swap from Estée Lauder double wear as it really just sat in my pores to their futurist hydra foundation which sits much better on my skin. I have to spend far more time on skin care and prep though before applying can’t just slap it on anymore

Gervhill · 20/02/2025 12:32

I have a similar skin type and am also finding lots of foundations just emphasise my pores. The ones that don’t are Bobbi Brown Skin foundation (I read it might have been discontinued). And L’Oréal Infallible 32hour, I use the Rose Ivory shade. This one is really nice, it has a satin finish. Or if you want to try slightly less coverage, Erborian CC cream is amazing.
Do not bother with Armani Silk foundation, my pores have never looked so big!

Fitzcarraldo353 · 20/02/2025 12:38

@Sunat45degrees thanks. I do use the Trinity BFF factor 30 cream for 'non-make up' days and really love the consistency. I'll check the foundation out.

Similarly have used Bobbi Brown and Estee Lauder foundations in the past so will check out these recommendations. Thanks.

I use il makiage foundation with their primer. It helps to "fill in" the holes on my nose so foundation goes nicely on top.
If foundation sits on your skin, is it something else needed in your prep? Dermaplaning massively helped my skin. As mentioned, primer is good too.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 21/02/2025 08:18

I don't always use primer so maybe I need to use it always but also maybe a different one (use Ren skincare one currently).

I keep hearing make p artists and dermotologists banging on about how s we get older we have to put more effort into making sure our skin is "ready" for make up. Lots of recommendations to use acid exfoliators for example. And I do find that if I use my Clarins Gentle Face Peel mask thing my skin is incredible and make up looks amazing! I use it about once a month but probably should use it once a week! I have definitely also found vitamin c realy helps to keep my skin looking and feeling smooth and a lot of them have a very mild exfoliating effect too.

Also 48 and pale. I've just started using Hourglass Luminous Glow and I really like it so far. It's expensive but I'm not disappointed. I'd say it is a medium, buildable coverage, not drying and wears pretty well all day. I usually set it with a small amount of powder in problem areas. My previous favourite was Dior Forever Skin Glow which I still rate highly but this might end up having the edge.

Great advice on skincare @Sunat45degrees , thanks.

And also to others for continuing recommendations.

I'm the same age and have experience same problem. After much experimenting (and expense), I have landed on Lisa Eldridge Enhancing Skin Tint. I am also pale, and shade T1. Total game changer. Love it.

Calypsocuckoo · 21/02/2025 20:52

Your skins sounds very similar to mine and my perfect foundation which I rebuy over and over is Dior Forever skin glow. Perfect texture which doesn’t spilt, buildable and comes in lots of shades. I have always found the counters for dior in John Lewis super helpful in choosing the right shade and type of foundation.
i use a fenty primer and Charlotte tilbury flawless filter underneath it and it lasts all day. Also use Charlotte tilbury powder.

W7 legend
Very cheap- usually less than £4
Has a bit of a glow
Is buildable
Does not retreat to pores
Downside -no spf so need to apply that before.
Give it a go a very low cost if you do not like it

MissAtomicBomb1 · 21/02/2025 21:21

I use the CT beautiful skin.
I had a similar problem but realised after taking advice on here that my moisturiser was causing the problem (I was using Clinique dramatically different)
I switched to Cerave and have no issues with it settling now. I think if you're using a water or oil based foundation then you have to match it to the products you use underneath or else they don't sit well together.

IJustLoveDogsTBH · 21/02/2025 21:29

DD was using Beautiful Skin but had the same problem with it clinging to dry patches and being very obvious.
I got her samples of the Unreal Glow stick and it’s a million times better, so much more hydrating and glowy. She needs primer though as her skin is dry and sucks up the foundation otherwise.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 21/02/2025 21:35

Thanks for all the additional recommendations!

Looks very the idea of a £4 option to try @Breadcat24 !

I think I need to do more research on skincare. I have no idea if either my foundation or moisturizer are oil or water based. @MissAtomicBomb1 !

This is about what goes below your foundation. My skin needs a vaseline type layer before foundation. I use Elizabeth arden nighttime miracle. I forgot to pack it on a recent holiday, and as a result have since found a cheaper alternative. But without a balm layer, any makeup will sit in rather that on my skin.

BackinBlack24 · 22/02/2025 08:22

How do you apply it ? Only way foundation doesn't settle into my pores is if I dab / pat it on with a beauty blender type sponge (damp) no rubbing with a brush

maximalistmaximus · 22/02/2025 10:29

I was getting that pore sitting thing too.

Now I use primer and no7 and it works well.

Breadcat24 · 22/02/2025 11:40

@Fitzcarraldo353
Sorry I have just looked it up and it is £5.50. But you can get it cheaper not buying direct. I use natural beige and am quite pale.
Whispers- they used to sell it in B+M bargains if you want to see it..

Interesting. I've been using a brush and kind of dappling it around and then buffing in. Never got on with sponges before. Will revisit.

It sounds like you could do with a good facial to clear out your pores and then close them. That might help your foundation settle better.

SiobahnRoy · 22/02/2025 12:07

L’Oréal plumping tinted serum foundation is amazing

Fitzcarraldo353 · 22/02/2025 12:13

Right. So taking on the advice I gave my skin a good Vit C peel/mask last night. This morning I used my AHA toner before usual moisturizer etc but have tried a new primer I had bought but not used. Also buffed in make up with a sponge.

Will see how it goes today...but will keep the skincare improvement up.

@Overtheatlantic a good facial sounds amazing. As soon as I get a new job I'll book one in (holding off on spending until then).

YSL Blurring primer, NARS radiant foundation 👌👌

Overtheatlantic · 22/02/2025 12:32

I had a good facial just a couple days ago and she did some extractions and my skin looks so clean and glowing. Well worth it!
