What to do with a silk scarf?

ZeroDucksLeft · 19/02/2025 15:20

For my birthday I was given a beautiful Fable silk scarf. It really is lovely but I am absolutely not the type of person who would wear it! I wear jeans and sweatshirt with trainers everyday. It wasn’t cheap, particularly given the gifters situation, so I would love to get some use out of it but have no clue how!
It’s 90cm x 90cm with a large single design in the centre.
Anyone got any ideas?

As a hair tie rather than around your neck? e.g: https://themomedit.com/5-ways-to-wear-a-silk-scarf-in-your-hair/

Claudyamoreira has great scarf tutorials. She's on YouTube, Insta, and TikTok.

Bandanas / triangle scarves are popular right now and could make the scarf more casual. Fold in half and wear the triangle to the front. Put both ends round your neck then tie them at the front under the triangle.

Wiennetta · 19/02/2025 17:59

You could tie it onto a bag too.

TeaRoseTallulah · 19/02/2025 18:05

I tie scarves onto bags too.

I have several Hermes 90x90 scarves and I just wear them under my coat. Tie them at the neck and tuck the ends inside the coat. Pop the scarf in your bag when you take your coat off. Or tie it on the bag but 90x90 is quite big for this.

henlake7 · 19/02/2025 20:58

Or if it's a nice design you could always hang it on a wall somewhere!

Same here. I don't understand the problem. Although I don't necessarily take them off indoors.

90 x 90 is too large to tie to a bag.

Hermès guide. I use all the "men's" styling with mine.

I'm collecting silk scarves to make scrunchies from!

mdinbc · 19/02/2025 23:54

I wears scarves in cool weather under my jacket. Even casually. They keep my neck warm and I love silk ones because they are light. Fold in half and do a loose wrap or tie; nothing too neat.

mdinbc · 19/02/2025 23:56

Also, pull a couple of colours out of the scarf for your outfit.

waltzingparrot · 19/02/2025 23:58

As a belt

KittenPause · 20/02/2025 00:39

Just wear it it'll brighten up a plain outfit

Tie your partner to the bedpost? ❤️

Edited

It just doesn’t “go” with anything else I wear, it’s not my look. So I was hoping for some suggestions for other options.

I might try it in my hair and see if that works.
Putting it on as a scarf would be like wearing court shoes with my gym wear, it just looks wrong, it doesn’t go.

I think they go with anything.
Right now I'm on bus to work, wearing black "mom" jeans, Nike trail running trainers in grey pink and green, a grey hoodie, a black full length quilted coat and an Hermes scarf folded in half as a triangle, tied round my neck and tucked in my hoodie.

When I get to work I take my coat off but leave hoodie with scarf tucked in and wear this all day as I work manual labour in a workshop.

The scarf keeps me nice and warm but can whip it off and scrunch it into my pocket if I get too hot.

Just try it out for a while, you're not used to it and that's why it looks jarring, but if you keep wearing it, you will absorb it into your style.

The man in the second Hermès link I posted is wearing jeans and trainers. It's not relevant that he's a man, the way he has tied them will work equally well on a woman. I don't wear jeans or trainers but one of the most stylish woman I know wears Hermès scarves with jeans and trainers.

It's not really a question of "going" with anything else. It's just out of your personal comfort zone but if you can't get over that there's not much that can be suggested other than happysunr1se 's advice

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 09:31

Hermes tie them as a scarf around the head, as a belt and they are shown with casual clothes worn at the neck. I’ve seen them used as backless tops in the past and as a ties around the hips. The latter 2 not for me.

There’s not much else to suggest. Fable, on their website, show a few ideas on how to wear them. Plus these are pretty inexpensive scarves so just sell it for what you can get for it or regift to someone who would wear it. They don’t seem to make many pure silk scarves this size, most are a silk mix or feels like silk, but someone would like it. Find it a home.

@ZeroDucksLeft , my beaten up old phone won't do links at the moment, but the lady in this video covers your issue!

DeLaRuiz · 17/08/2025 14:09

Well that’s a weird gift, as it really isn’t your thing, I’d sell it on Vinted!

Wiglio · 17/08/2025 14:13

I found an Hermes scarf in a charity shop, it’s beautiful but I’d never wear it. I had it framed, worked well.

MarmaladeHoverfly · 17/08/2025 17:09

How about using it as an antimacassar? You'd need to sew it onto a backing of some sort to give it enough heft to lie flat, but it wouldn't be difficult. Plain cotton fabric would do, or a cut-down old towel. Iif you have wool and needles a plain knitted or crochet backing would also work well. Decorative and (sort of) functional.

Kdubs1981 · 17/08/2025 17:39

I wear my fable scarf folded in half, over my shoulders and around my neck with a tight cashmere cardigan buttoned up and tucked into wide legged trousers

OR

folded in half as a triangle and around my waist over smooth trousers or a figure hugging skirt
