Calling all apples... (let's share tips and good finds that suit our shape)

I thought it might be a good idea to share our good finds that suit our shape.

I saw an apple in a gathered full skirt today. It looked dreadful. It made me think that there must be loads of us on mn. What is your favorite outfit? What do you get complimented most in?

"Apple shaped tends to describe women who have wide torsos (full bust, waist and upper back), as they store body fat around the mid section of their bodies (stomach, abdomen and chest). Such women have relatively slim thighs and upper legs. Apple shaped women often have a 'top-heavy' appearance, with a bust and midriff bigger than their hips, a prominent tummy and a flat bottom.

To assess whether you are apple shaped, again measure your hip-waist ratio; if the ratio is greater than 0.8, then you are apple shaped.

If you are apple-shaped then you are in good company ~ other famous UK 'apples' include the beautiful Elizabeth Hurley and Oscar winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.

What to wear if you are an 'apple'

Trousers and skirts that are straight. Avoid very fitted or tailored garments, particularly those with well defined waist bands as these will only draw unwanted attention to your mid-section
Avoid mixing and matching many different colours. Choose monochromatic outfits, as the use of just one colour will create an overall impression of length that will focus away from your width
Tops should cover the hip area and be worn over tapered trousers that flatter slimmer legs. Shorter skirts also help to draw interest to your lower body region. Light coloured hosiery (preferably 'nude') will help focus attention on your legs
Pockets should be avoided as often these can be unflattering and attract unwanted attention to the upper body"

having a small behind might make these look extra good and swishy...

Dr Briffa used to write a column in The Observer about nutrition, and now he writes in Observer Food Monthly. He seems to specialise in sorting through all of the scientific research as to why some people are pear shaped while others are apples. Anyway, his recommendations are working and what's more it's not another diet where you end up feeling crap about yourself after two days and ready to eat the carpet.

CountessDracula · 24/05/2008 20:33

and what are his recommendations?
I can't see anyting on the site you linked to!

Hi Countess,
What he says is that people who put weight on around their middles are sensitive to insulin(this is the hormone responsible for storage of fat amongst other things). There's also evidence in The New Scientist this week that fat deposited around the abdomen behaves differently to that stored on the thighs and hips, in that it releases hormones that encourage more fat to be laid down there - great! What Dr Briffa recommends is that you reduce the intake of sugars, processed foods and starches which in turn reduces the effect of them releasing huge amounts of insulin into the body. It's a bit like Atkins but not even vaguely as extreme. The good news is that he also says that exercise has been shown to have little effect on weight loss. The more exercise you do, the hungrier you are. So in short you up the amount of protein you eat, always eat breakfast (but avoid breakfast cereals) and try to drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake. p.s. I've lost 5inches off my waist in 3 weeks. without even feeeling vaguely like I'm on a "diet". I couldn't last more than 2 days on Atkins. By the way, in response to your original thread, that skirt is gorgeous, thanks for the tip.

pollywobbledoodle · 26/05/2008 14:00

just bumping so we don't lose this thread...any more good tips for places to go or things that look good on us trouser hitchers?

wineplease · 26/05/2008 19:11

TKB thanks for the weight loss tips. Can I ask how you managed to loss so much around the waist in several weeks? What kind of things did you eat?

My diet is ok, I cook most things from scratch. However, I need to adjust my portion sizes and also reduce my carb intake (but nothing else seems to fill me up!!).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

pollywobbledoodle · 27/05/2008 17:37

llareggub · 01/06/2008 19:13

I'm another apple who has to continuously pull up trousers!

My hips really are quite narrow and if it wasn't for my huge tummy and norks I would be slyph like, I know it.

pollywobbledoodle · 02/06/2008 10:35

only just got your name! [slow] pmsl

Mikafan · 10/06/2008 13:15

I'm also continually pulling up skirts and trousers but only so that there isn't a gap between my waistband and the bottom of my top/t-shirt. Most tops are too short on me. Does anyone know of anywhere that sell them longer?

Mikafan · 12/06/2008 12:39

I'll take that as a no then

lovecat · 12/06/2008 12:43

Principles have got some really long ones in this season, I also find Wallis good for length - but they can be a bit 'mother of the bride'ish (don't know how old you are!) so you have to pick n' choose your stuff

Mikafan · 12/06/2008 13:29

Thanks Lovecat. I'll take a look.

CountessDracula · 16/09/2008 11:58

Any apples got any new things to share with us?

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 16/09/2008 11:58
