Calling all apples... (let's share tips and good finds that suit our shape)

I thought it might be a good idea to share our good finds that suit our shape.

I saw an apple in a gathered full skirt today. It looked dreadful. It made me think that there must be loads of us on mn. What is your favorite outfit? What do you get complimented most in?

"Apple shaped tends to describe women who have wide torsos (full bust, waist and upper back), as they store body fat around the mid section of their bodies (stomach, abdomen and chest). Such women have relatively slim thighs and upper legs. Apple shaped women often have a 'top-heavy' appearance, with a bust and midriff bigger than their hips, a prominent tummy and a flat bottom.

To assess whether you are apple shaped, again measure your hip-waist ratio; if the ratio is greater than 0.8, then you are apple shaped.

If you are apple-shaped then you are in good company ~ other famous UK 'apples' include the beautiful Elizabeth Hurley and Oscar winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.

What to wear if you are an 'apple'

Trousers and skirts that are straight. Avoid very fitted or tailored garments, particularly those with well defined waist bands as these will only draw unwanted attention to your mid-section
Avoid mixing and matching many different colours. Choose monochromatic outfits, as the use of just one colour will create an overall impression of length that will focus away from your width
Tops should cover the hip area and be worn over tapered trousers that flatter slimmer legs. Shorter skirts also help to draw interest to your lower body region. Light coloured hosiery (preferably 'nude') will help focus attention on your legs
Pockets should be avoided as often these can be unflattering and attract unwanted attention to the upper body"

thank you bran...i had that on a longlist for the next order. anyone tried thisit seems to tick the boxes...

Oooooh good thread.

I am an apple, but with smallish norks. I wear a lot of dresses, especially in summer.
Have just bought this dress from monsoon which is miraculously stomach falttering/ skimming and lovely (in dark blue and orange)

Can also recommend high waisted jeans from gap which are fabulously comfy - straightlish/ skinnyish leg. Also cropped trousers.

I find trousers are the worst - my wardrobe is full of jeans and smart work trousers. - nothing in between.

pollywobbledoodle · 23/05/2008 12:52

you could be their anti-PR woman btw....very funny description of it in all it's vileness

pollywobbledoodle · 23/05/2008 12:55

cropped trousers are a revelation to me from this thread...never even try them on normally being 5'7'' and mainly body with stumps on the bottom....but have tried a few out of a bag of pass ons and they are relatively flattering

lovely dress btw

Pinkjenny · 23/05/2008 12:55

Where do I find the on-line diagnosis? I can't work out what I am.

foothesnoo · 23/05/2008 12:56

This dress is fantastic too and a bargain at the moment from the dreaded boden. It's really nice on - I bought it after seeing a friend wearing one.

CountessDracula · 23/05/2008 12:56

ooh that is a nice dress
will go and try

CountessDracula · 23/05/2008 12:57

it does look nice that boden one but I WILL NOT buy anything with the word sassy in it

i think tranny and suze do one on the littlewoods site but if your trousers are the right size to fit your waist but therefore so huge on the bum that they slide down all the time thats a good clue....

foothesnoo · 23/05/2008 12:59

CD it's very nice. And only 23 quid.

cadelaide · 23/05/2008 13:00

bran · 23/05/2008 13:02

T & S shape thingy

There's a Gok one too, on the BBC website I think (or on some tv channel site if his programme isn't on BBC).

foothesnoo · 23/05/2008 13:05

I may have to leave the thread - T and S say I am a column.

CountessDracula · 23/05/2008 13:09

it says i am an apple

bran · 23/05/2008 13:09

You could start your very own column thread foothesnoo.

pollywobbledoodle · 23/05/2008 13:13

or , in fact , your own column

foothesnoo · 23/05/2008 13:14

Well, it says any trouser shape suits a column which is certainly not me! However I note that celebrity on the column page is Nicole Kidman - rather more aspirational than Kathy Bates.....

bran · 23/05/2008 13:22

at polly.

bran · 23/05/2008 13:28

foothesnoo, I suspect that your trouser problem is that that most trousers in the UK seem to be cut for pears.

They're not at all fashionable, but if you wanted plain hardwearing trousers that suit a straight-up-and-down shape then Hawkshead are quite good.

Do you actually look like Nicole Kidman? Sadly I do look very like Kathy Bates, and she's much older than me.

foothesnoo · 23/05/2008 13:42

I wish Bran (although she looks frighteningly botoxed these days). More Patricia Hodge....

KateJess · 23/05/2008 15:47

This is a great thread!! I am also a most definite apple, having to wear 18 tops to accommodate my massive F-cup boobs, but a size 14/16 on the bottom. To add to this I am also 6' tall which makes clothes buying an absolute nightmare.
I'm going to a wedding soon and dreading the inevitably depressing shopping trip...I love that Monsoon dress above so might try it - but I fear I'll have the usual too-tight-round-boobs-too-big-everywhere-else problem!
