dress for 15 year old to go out in

dressfor15 · 19/02/2025 11:47

DD has been asked to wear a dress to go out for dinner with her friends so they all look dressed up. I think they are wearing fitted/short length/plain dresses. Where should she buy one and what style to fit in? As in where do your daughters buy theirs and what do they wear. Then what about footwear/coat/jacket? DD wants to fit in rather than trend set/stand out.

To be honest this seems a bit much for a 15 year old. Does she want the dress? I love my dresses, more or less live in them and don’t often wear trousers or jeans. I would resent being told to wear one though.

HollyGolightly4 · 19/02/2025 12:20

Leather jacket/crop jacket/fitted dress (length depends on what she feels comfortable with) then trainers, Nike or new balance. Have a look on ASOS or plt. (Tbh i'd probably go to Primark/New Look at that age, and claim it's Zara 🤣)

TriangleLight · 19/02/2025 12:24

They all wear strappy bodycon mini dresses. Cropped aviator or leather jackets. Shein is where they shop.

Manchesterbythesea · 19/02/2025 12:25

My dd16 is out of this ‘dress’ scene for now. It’ll probably come back! But it was dresses from Shein that they were all wearing. Very short, very tight..sometimes with cut outs. If a jacket is needed then nothing will beat the Molly Mae leather cropped jacket from Zara. Shoes are Converse or Nike’s.

DreamingOfASilentNight · 19/02/2025 12:30

As much as I dislike the whole concept, I think for a ten who doesn't really know what they want or like and who will be buying an item without any hope if longevity, id honestly but something from shein or maybe boohoo or ply. They are cheap and are a good option if it's likely something that won't be worn much it they'll go off of really fast. Most of DS friends have bought that kind of thing around that age.

BigFatLiar · 19/02/2025 12:34

Have a quick look inthe charity shops, there might be something.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 19/02/2025 12:36

Skin tight, short and trainers, AF1s mostly.

‘Grief! Have you never been a teenager? Grin It’s prime Let’s all dress the same! time. I recall a Lower Fifth school trip to the Houses of Parliament, sometime in the mid-70s, when an entire gang of about a dozen girls all contracted to wear jeans and (possibly) bomber jackets … I wasn’t one of the gang so had to make do with raising a supercilious eyebrow. SadGrin

Yes, l was a teenager. Brought up in Paris too! I was merely asking if the daughter actually wanted to wear a dress. Pertinent to the conversation l think.

Backinthedress · 19/02/2025 12:51

Primark or h&m would offer something suitable at a low cost

Decapitatedsausage · 19/02/2025 12:52

Like others have said, very short strappy dresses, cut outs, worn with trainers and leather bomber jacket. DD loves Shein, H&M, Zara, primark etc.

roselilylavender · 19/02/2025 12:56

Exactly what everyone else is saying
Think about the bra? Having bra straps showing seems to be acceptable but you still need to think about the cut of the dress/whether most of your DD's bra are a grungy grey from the wash!
Get your " you look lovely" face ready even if you want to wail "my baby!" or say "you're not going out dressed like that"!

TheGlamour · 19/02/2025 13:00

is what the OP says … 🤷‍♀️

Of course wearing the sort of dress described here might be outside her daughter’s usual wardrobe - but it’s not inevitably a bad thing to be made more brave by being in a crowd. It might be sad to spend the next 15 years of her life afraid to wear dresses like that because she’d never tried.

(Can never forget the middle aged poster on S&B who exclaimed Well, what am I supposed to wear if I don’t wear leggings?! )

TheGlamour · 19/02/2025 13:21

I’m not in possession of any teen girls but stumbled upon this site:

Bershka

via another thread. Is this the sort of thing? Definitely more pocket money friendly and less grown up than Zara - though I know nothing about the provenance of the clothes.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/02/2025 15:43

H&M online might be a good option

mamatoTails · 19/02/2025 15:56

SHEIN short body con type dress with spaghetti straps my DD would wear, with a cropped jacket and high top white converse.

mitogoshigg · 19/02/2025 16:14

My dd has this one from H&M

She's a little older but still young!

She wears dm boots mostly

dress for 15 year old to go out in
WhiteLily1 · 19/02/2025 16:21

I have a 15 year old DD.
Its very tight strappy short one colour dress, cropped jacket (leather or a light denim) and trainers or white converse is what my DD wears.
Shein is ok if you have time. Otherwise berska is very popular at the moment, or Zara. H&M is too young for dresses, river island too uncool / older my DD finds. It’s the online shops too such as PLT and boohoo etc. My DD also seems to get quite a few things from vinted.

Absolutely - I do have a teen Dd and this shop is in right now.

HollyGolightly4 · 19/02/2025 17:27

I can't cope with Shein because of the returns policy. I appreciate not everyone has that luxury, but I think it should be raised.

dressfor15 · 19/02/2025 21:32

She wouldnt choose to wear a dress (to the person who asked) and now has the added worry about shoes/accessories but she wants to fit in and the friend wants them all to look dressed up and different to usual. Have tried H&M and Primark in stores only and there was nothing. Bershka was on our list to try thank you. Not keen on buying online. What about underwear as it would be fully visible on most of these clingy styles? Are adidas trainers ok?

My 15 year old DD loves clothes from Cider. She likes florals but would be happy with this sort of thing in plainer colours

http://ciderhere.com/dUuiK4

ciderhere.com/NshdLR

She wears opaque black tights, sometimes with fishnets over the top, and chunky white trainers or chunky Mary Jane shoes. She has a white fluffy fleece jacket and a fake fur hoody style jacket, or she wears a fitted cardigan like this
http://ciderhere.com/cfNvXI

She generally looks gorgeous- not too revealing or too mumsy.

Tahcnibor · 19/02/2025 22:01

Why doesn't she just ask her friends what they are wearing and go from there, if she wants to fit in? Ask them where they are getting their outfits from.

marmiteloversunite · 19/02/2025 22:05

Hollister does little dresses. Adidas are fine.

dressfor15 · 19/02/2025 22:17

Thanks she has asked her friends who havent been shopping yet and have just sent pictures of the type of dresses they plan to buy!! DD needs to shop this half term as she plays football at weekends and we dont have local shops.
