What colour and style of knitwear are your most used?

redstripestar · 18/02/2025 21:46

Just that really.

I have a slouchy grey New Look cardigan, a cropped cream New Look cardigan, a red M&S roll neck. Also a navy funnel neck ex Topshop jumper that I got in a charity shop for £5. For work I have a beige M&S roll neck and a bright pink M&S crew neck jumper.

They are all tatty and need replacing and I am leaning towards merino/cashmere. I need to smarten up my work look too.

What knitwear do you recommend having?

I absolutely love knitwear and have loads. I live in a pretty chilly Victorian tenement in Edinburgh and WFH so can justify having so many as I wear knitwear most of the year 😂

I have a few chunky/thick knits that I wear when it’s really cold.

My favourites are:

https://jaggerylondon.co.uk/products/nora-turtleneck-alpaca-pima-cotton-cloud

https://www.theknottyones.com/products/heartbreaker-seal-salt-alpaca-wool-sweater

So I would recommend at least one really snuggly item that you can chuck on and wear at home.

I probably get more wear out of slimmer/lighter jumpers though - a bit easier to wear (fit better under jackets/coats. A really nice cashmere jumper in a colour that suits you is really versatile. Easy to wear casually but also can be dressed up. So worth looking at some simple but good quality jumpers.

I have these which I love:

https://www.genevievesweeney.com/product/maud-lambswool-cashmere-sweater-burgundy/

https://navygrey.co/products/the-weekend-navy

Not sure what your budget is - some ideas though. And Vinted is great for affordable good quality.

I love that Jaggery jumper. And the Genvieve Sweeney ones - love the speckling. This is nice too https://jaggerylondon.co.uk/collections/womens-jumpers/products/lenny-rib-jumper-highland-wool-indigo

I've been looking at the likes of M&S, Uniqlo etc. but not sure how long they last. I'd save up and go up to £250 I reckon. Do the ones you mention last a long time? I'm also trying to find a navy one but I don't suit dark navy - it needs a bit of warmth to it without going so blue that it's cobalt.

I have a collection of knitted vests of various colours, some fitted some baggy. I find them perfect because they brighten up an outfit under a coat and I never seem to overheat while wearing them. I can also pack one in my bag if I’m not sure about the weather.

KatharinaRosalie · 19/02/2025 07:06

All my most used knitwear is this style, preferably also with cowl neck:
https://www.roman.co.uk/ribbed-batwing-jumper-16014054
I have big boobs but decent waist, so I find this style the most flattering. They are mostly in summer colours - blue, grey blue, grey, pink, light green etc

Meadowfinch · 19/02/2025 07:11

A long thick Celtic&co sweater and a Bosie Aran type sweater for really cold days. A mad multicoloured tank, and several safe lambswool/cashmere tidy sweaters from Woolover.

rivalsbinge · 19/02/2025 07:14

I've always found the white company cashmere lasts, not the brightest colours but great basics. And they have voucher codes.

Everything M&S for me bobbles so badly even with care.

icanatilldancetowhigfield · 19/02/2025 07:17

Wow, I love jumpers but my budget doesn't stretch to such prices! OP you can get nice jumpers without crazy prices (though these jumpers are beautiful). I get mine in Fatfacd usually or White Stuff.

Re: quality, I have had some cashmere jumpers from Uniqlo and M&S and they’ve only looked good for one year really. Uniqlo I found developed holes (which I did sew up) but DH had the same problem. Others might have had a different experience though!

The more expensive items I’ve had for a bit longer are looking great (probably the oldest ones I have are 3/4 years and I expect to get a lot more out of them).

All knitwear needs a bit of TLC though - minimal washing and worth getting a de-bobbler.

Other brands I like if you’re investing in something:

https://babaa.es/home-b-3-2025-01-2/

https://www.and-daughter.com/

https://www.lenversfashion.com/

I’ve built up a good collection quite slowly however. And generally not paid full price. I’ve previously bought &Daughter on sale at the Outnet. Paid about £120 for a cashmere cable knit - not a huge amount more than Uniqlo cashmere which is around £80. I got the Jaggery jumper with a 25% discount. Knotty Ones often yearly archive sales etc. Vinted is great for this too - I got an &Daughter cashmere tank for £30.

quirkychick · 19/02/2025 07:28

I have some ultra fine merino from uniqlo that has lasted 10+ yrs, I also have a couple of cotton cashmere mix ones too. They're useful all year round as lighter jumpers. I really like merino as it tends not to pill and is lovely and soft.

I buy a lot of good quality knitwear from Vinted too. Some of my most worn heavier jumpers are an aubergine Toast Shetland knit (sale bargain), plum original Aran knit (Vinted), navy angora Diesel cardigan (Vinted), purple Peruvian cardigan (Vinted), grey cashmere poncho John Lewis (sale bargain).

ILikeMyBike · 19/02/2025 07:59

Slim fitting ribbed roll necks that go under absolutely anything and everything including blouses, cardigans, sweaters, chunky knit jumpers. I feel really smug when wearing one as it makes such a difference. I have loads, including a fine wool one from Uniqlo, but the best is the Lucy and Yak one which looks like wool but is actually a thicker, knitted cotton. It's amazing quality. I got it second hand and wear it loads and it looks like new still.

cannaethink · 19/02/2025 08:42

I’ve got some lambswool jumpers from Uniqlo that are a few years old that are still looking pretty good, but this years lambswool jumpers looked thin and not anywhere near the same quality. The merino ribbed roll neck tops are great though. I’ve got cashmere from Uniqlo but from Vinted which is also great.
My most worn knitwear is a light grey cashmere jumper from Jack Wills (via Vinted) which I’ve had for a couple of years.

Manchesterbythesea · 19/02/2025 08:47

Oh I love a nice jumper! My favorite is a navy & white one I bought in Penneys about 8 years ago. I’ve worn it to death! It’s so soft and comfy. My comfort jumper.

AmeliaTangfastic · 19/02/2025 08:49

My office at work can be very cold! So I wear a lot of knitwear. My most worn are probably navy v neck or boat neck (I have one of each) and an olive green, chunky cowl neck.

I want some cardigans for Spring, but can't see many in the shops...also don't want to buy anything too cheap as they tend to bobble quickly

dudsville · 19/02/2025 09:01

I love knitwear. I have 8 jumpers that are slightly loose fitting, and 6 cardigans, all oversized. I avoid cashmere, but otherwise they are all various wools, and in a range of colours and shapes, most are block colour or flecks, but 3 are fair isle. I have too many and they don't all get equal use, but they each have their place in my wardrobe. I collected these over time in sales so that I could get better quality. And then I baby them. Hand-wash maybe once a year, and I do a bobble session once or twice a year when I sit down at the kitchen table with music, a glass of wine and my debobbler. They are stored in a small cupboard that's lined with moth killer and homemade lavender sachets. (I realise I've detailed into generic knitwear love...)

TianasBayou · 19/02/2025 09:08

Cashmere! Most worn are a couple of M&S men's roll necks in charcoal and black. So versatile, go with anything and not too bulky to layer.

Branched out with a colourful wool mix roll neck from White Stuff in the sales.

Also have a very long navy cardigan from Monsoon and a boxy cream one but prefer the ease and cleaner lines of a sweater.

quirkychick · 19/02/2025 19:48

I meant to add, I have quite a few pieces of forest green knitwear, including Uniqlo x Lemaire chunky cotton space knit jumper, that is actually very warm and I wear a lot, and a crossover cardigan/jumper hybrid, can't remember the brand.

I bought a grey cashmere vest and am a convert to this style.

This is a good idea - I might look into one of these from Phase Eight - I used to wear their jumpers. Just very simple and go with everything.

I have gradually built a cashmere collection which sounds very grand but basically means buying one or two jumpers a year and taking very good care of them. My most worn are all grey or navy, particularly men’s crew-necks, a cowl-neck from Fenn Wright Manson about fifteen years ago, and some oversized slouchy men’s cardigans with pockets (see my username!).

Vinted is a good source for cashmere but you have to be very disciplined about washing and freezing things to avoid moth infestations.

Sunat45degrees · 23/02/2025 11:59

I am usually a fan of entirely natural fabrics but I have had surprising success with some synthetic knitwear from both M&S and John Lewis for every day/casual wear. I have a grey hoodie style from M&S that still looks good (although is a bit stretched now) after 3 years and a brown v-neck with a collar that has lasted a similar time.

John Lewis cashmere is a good mix between very high quality and poor quality - lasts much better than the M&S stuff I find but isn't as expensive as the White Company or similar. I've also had good knitwear from Mint Velvet, including a white cashmere jumper that is starting to look a bit tired now but for a white jumper to have lasted 3 winters... I'm impressed! And it was only £85 when I bought it so not crazy expensive. [I'm actually toying with investigating how to dye cashmere as the jumper itself has kept its shape really well, it's just that the colour is not as fresh and there are some very mild stains].

Recently got a few bits from Phase 8 and have been very disappointed in the quality. Luckily I got them at a sample sale so I'm not as upset as I could be as they weren't expensive but I doubt they'll look good beyond one year, max.

I hate being warm so tend to wear thinner jumpers.
My most worn ones are as follows
White company thin cashmere ones in grey and Fawn
Thin cashmere mix in a petrol blue
Grey thin merino one from M&S
Burgundy cotton mix v neck from M&S (mens)

I tried a merino one (too small) in a charity shop and loved it - I will be looking out for more of these. I recently got into wearing turtle neck layers in viscose but the wool adds another level!
