Where can I get decent cotton underwear these days?

It used to be M&S for me, but their multipack briefs have gone downhill in quality. The cotton is very thin if there are any high cotton ones at all.

I just want some reliable plain cotton knickers to replace ones I've had for a while. I thought about John Lewis, but they don't seem very well made either, as dd has a few pairs and the seams aren't very strong as they have come undone in the wash.

Anyone had experience with Stripe and Stare?

Is Tencel a good alternative to cotton? Haven't bought anything made of Tencel, but Stripe and Stare seem to do styles made of it.

I love stripe and stare, and also Boody which are bamboo with a bit of Lycra. Not their new freshmesh ones. They have the feel of stretchy cotton to me.

xsquared · 09/02/2025 22:54

Thank you @olderbutwiser . I shall check them out too.

Sainsburys or Wirapa on Amazon if you don't mind very unsexy ones ( I don't).

MyPithyHedgehog · 09/02/2025 22:58

Have you tried Snag? I agree about M&S. they used to be my go-to but they’re terrible these days.

Herbologistinwaiting · 09/02/2025 23:04

The worst thing is I can’t find any that stay up! They don’t have proper elastic and just keep falling down. My best ones are very old and pre Covid. Before the quality went downhill so fast it’s impossible to find any decent ones.

SereneCapybara · 09/02/2025 23:12

I got some good ones from M&S recently, after having had pretty rubbish ones a year or so ago, so maybe they have improved.

I love Boody for sleep bras, so they might be good for knickers but be warned - the bamboo stretches. Matters less with pants as you only wear them once before washing but the bras get looser and less supportive after one wear.

Have you tried Sloggi? I don't like them but they do stay in place.

Underdays. Incredibly soft, great fit and comfort level is beyond blissful. No digging in, no slippage, feel invisible next to skin. Pricey (you might want to wait for an offer) but so worth it. And they wash really well without losing elasticity, shape or softness.

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 09/02/2025 23:31

Same OP, M&S pants are awful now. I tried wirapa from Amazon after seeing them recommended here and they are great. I will buy more and won't be going back to M&S

xsquared · 09/02/2025 23:54

Thanks for the recommendations.

That's what worries me about trying different fabrics like bamboo, lyocell or Tencel @SereneCapybara, that they won't be as sturdy or behave as well as cotton!

I never thought of Amazon being an option, but having had a look at Wirapa, they seem to have good reviews .

the standard M&S ones are absolutely terrible however they've got quite a wide range now and the M&s modal no VPL are excellent

I couldn't care less about VPL tbh!

Coaster1 · 10/02/2025 07:59

Sloggi high legs for me. Every time. They wash beautifully and do a fine job of holding my caearean bulge in!

Keep a watch for them to go on Price Match John Lewis

Idontjetwashthefucker · 10/02/2025 08:56

If anyone can find any that have a decent width gusset I'll be forever grateful!

HoppingPavlova · 10/02/2025 09:09

My DD will not have any other undies/bra’s/cami’s after first trying Boody. Completely refuses any other brand now as claims very comfortable. Everything seems to last well with 2 years constant use.

It must be the bamboo factor as DH and some of our sons will wear nothing else but bamboo undies and socks these days but they all have their preferred bamboo brands.

I just wear bargain shop cheapies for underwear as always think I’ll loose weight then get some decent stuff. Needless to say I’ve been wearing cheap shit for two decades and counting🤣.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 10/02/2025 09:10

Primark cotton pants are great.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/02/2025 09:32

Sloggi, usually cheapest at The Sock Shop

APurpleSquirrel · 10/02/2025 10:00

Wirapa - like you used to only get M&S, but they've really gone down hill, elastic coming undone, & most aren't cotton anymore.
Tried Wirapa off Amazon - thick double layer cotton, stay up & in place, & if you keep an eye on them can get 4 pairs for under £15.
I'll not be going back to M&S.

Thanks @miIIicant . Never heard of British Boxers before, but it looks like the sort of thing I'm after.

Would you say the sizing chart was accurate?

Yes, it is.

miIIicant · 11/02/2025 08:11

PS. I bought Wirapa from Amazon and thought they were terrible. Ugly, floppy pants. They went to the charity shop.

fortyfifty · 11/02/2025 10:47

Ones I've bought from Primark have lasted much longer than the last few packs I've bought from M&S.

SingingLikeLarks · 11/02/2025 11:07

I've found the Uniqlo cotton high rise briefs to be very good. And the H&M cotton multipacks are pretty good (and cheaper) too.

mozzrules · 11/02/2025 11:32

I also was searching for an alternative to M&S and wanted good quality cotton and have found H&M very good. Bought a selection of different styles in cotton about a year ago and have lasted well.

That's worth knowing. Good tip. Thank you.
