Does this wedding ring look strange?

We went wedding ring shopping today. I thought I wanted a plain band to frame my engagement ring, but then I spotted this ring and was instantly drawn to it. I think because the diamonds are the same shape as my engagement ring. But does the gap between the two look weird? Is it too much sparkle overall for everyday wear? Can’t ask people in real life as I don’t think I’ll get honest opinions as no one will want to offend!

You need to get one made that fits your ring. Not as expensive as you'd think, we had a local jeweller make mine to fit my engagement ring

I've attached a photo but it'll take a while to show

I love it and thinks it looks great in your original pic

FindingMeno · 09/02/2025 19:54

Absolutely love it.

Readysetgooo · 09/02/2025 19:54

Agree with PP that neither of the rings "fit" with your engagement ring and leave quite a bit of a gap. I'd be worried, especially with the shape of each, that they'd damage each other as they moved. A jeweller should be able to guide you to something that fits. I have quite a plain engagement ring but the band is apparently an unusual shape because it's a bit barrelled. The jeweller spent ages trying to find wedding bands that fitted alongside it so they sat squarely together. Agree definitely go with sparkle though!

GlassBellJar · 09/02/2025 19:54

My engagement ring is a similar shape to yours and I had a a Silversmith make me a gold and diamond wedding that has a very slight indent to it so fits perfectly under my engagement ring but it's not enough that you notice the curve in the occasions when I take my engagement ring off and only have my wedding ring (dirty jobs for example).

It was also considerably cheaper to have it done that way than to buy one off the shelf from a jewellers.

Plus He used some other sentimental items of jewellery that were no longer used and melted the gold down to remake into my wedding band so it has something from both my parents in it.

Verlaine · 09/02/2025 19:55

I really don’t like it. It looks quite old fashioned and a bit ‘frumpy’ to me. Also, as you say as strange positioning next to the engagement ring. For some reason it reminds me of something a GoT character might wear!

If you like it though go for it, don’t care about what other people think

Anonmousse · 09/02/2025 19:58

I like the first one but agree it would look better a similar style but a tighter fit against the engagement ring.
The plain one could easily be made to fit next to it, but the diamond one is more unusual.
It might be worth asking a jeweller for an approximate price to make something that will fit.
Although gold prices are eye watering at the moment!

mummyh2016 · 09/02/2025 19:59

It looks a lot better than the plain one. I'd definitely look into having one made to fit your engagement ring though. If you live in the Midlands Hockley jewellers at the jewellery quarter did mine and they weren't expensive at all and it matches my engagement ring perfectly - it looks like they were purchased together as a set despite my engagement ring being from a different store.

MouseMama · 09/02/2025 19:59

My wedding band is a similar shape but has been made to sit snugly around the engagement ring. It wasn’t hugely expensive and when I had my children I had another one made for the other side with coloured stones to symbolise my different children. i love it and get a lot of compliments in it. So I think it’s a nice idea but yours needs a bit of refinement as neither the shape nor the style are perfect matches.

mummyh2016 · 09/02/2025 19:59

If the gap is bugging you now it will bug you for years btw.

persisted · 09/02/2025 20:00

I wear my engagement ring on the other hand because it doesn't fit well with my wedding ring. No-one notices or cares. Get the one you love.

Cinnamonbonbon · 09/02/2025 20:02

We did get a quote from a jeweller to make a plain 18ct. gold band to sit flush with my ring and it was (I thought) really expensive, so I had ruled out getting one custom made. Will check out Hockley though for a quote as we are in the Midlands.

Nice but maybe your engagement ring need an extra diamond to fit together

Doggymummar · 09/02/2025 20:10

They are still the wrong way round. Wedding ring goes on first, then engagement ring. First one looks best but need to see it the correct way round.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 09/02/2025 20:12

Personally I do not think it’s too much of a gap and I quite like it…. I also internally called booooo at the plain band 🤣
But who cares what I think!

A PP said it but the 💯 best advice is get something YOU love.

If you love that one, go for it… if you like it but it’s not quite right go to a jeweller show them that pic and explain you want similar but more flush.

they will knock up some CADs in plastic and you will get a good feel for how it will look before committing. I’ve commissioned several pieces now I realise it’s a. Easy and b. Not particularly expensive

FindusMakesPancakes · 09/02/2025 20:13

You need to switch them round. Wedding ring on first, then engagement ring. And also see what you like the look of with just the wedding ring on, as you may not always wear both together.

The price I was charged was less than a comparable one from a high street jeweller which wasn't made to fit my ring, it's definitely worth looking into.

AzureLurker · 09/02/2025 20:24

Former silversmith here, I like both but the gap isn't quite right. Rings are better made for each other as where they meet they will wear and the concern would be that the claws wear fast and you lose stones. Many people will only wear the band daily which also preserves the engagement ring, how do you feel about it by itself with the shape?

theduchessofspork · 09/02/2025 20:28

I like it - unusual in a good way
I think you want a bit of a gap as you have or if would look like a giant ring

engagement and wedding rings are usually so dull, so excellent find

Honestly the order does not matter, however the OP likes it is fine

No you see I prefer the OPs, because this is more like one too big ring (to me, it’s subjective obvs)

Thank you, honestly I really dislike this whole ‘rings to in this order’ nonsense. Because it is nonsense. I’m divorced and I wear rings on my ‘wedding’ finger sometimes. No one has ever dropped dead…

Nice, see what you did there with the extra diamond!

EarlierDistraction · 09/02/2025 20:42

I like it but agree it needs to be custom made. I didn't want a shaped one so I could wear it alone and went for a plain band, I do like the look of them together (they touch at one point with tiny gaps either side which don't show) but they have both worn, luckily the engagement ring is a rubover setting not claw so the stone hasn't come loose (yet, 25 years in) but I do keep an eye on it. If I was doing it now I would get a shaped one made. In fact maybe I ought to get mine modified but I don't want to lose our engravings.

I do also agree that it will catch on things (hair, towels etc).

MorrisZapp · 09/02/2025 22:38

How can there be a 'correct' way to wear jewellery? What nonsense.
