Reynaulds misery - best footwear?

SeaSaltHairDo · 09/02/2025 12:19

Just been watching DS football and my feet are absolutely freezing. It'll take all day for my toes to warm up; they are totally numb and then they hurt ☹ I was wearing uggs so thought I would be OK with a sheepskin lining but they are quite old and battered now and my feet were as cold as if I'd been wearing trainers. Has anyone got any suggestions please?
I am thinking about some riding boots but they are so dear and even second hand they cost a small fortune.
That being said, I can't carry on like this, I'm totally miserable! Thanks

Poor you! Raynauds is a misery. M not sure about shoes and boots but I find layering my socks is wonderful, I have silk liner socks. I suggest taking cardboard to stand on too!

sunbum · 09/02/2025 12:24

i wear ski sock liner socks, wool socks and my gore tex nike trainers and my feet stay toasty. I get frozen feet if not. I think the Uggs are the issue.

soupyspoon · 09/02/2025 12:25

I havent found any solutions. I dont have a diagnosis but its certainly what I have. One of my toes gets extremely painful more than the others (which are painful enough), they manage to be both numb and extremely painful. Also red and white at the same time.

greengreyblue · 09/02/2025 12:27

Get platforms - great for playground duty at school . Also my Peter Storm ( Snowden) walking boots are great when walking the dog. I feel nothing but warmth in them.
Edited to say I don’t have Raynauds but generally do get cold feet. I have smart platform trainers and casual ones. The thick rubber is really insulating

Gingernaut · 09/02/2025 12:28

Three pairs of socks and solid shoes

I've got toe caps from Shoezone

These are incredible. I went to loads of places to try on waterproof thermal insulated walking boots, and these were hands down the most comfortable and warmest. Im so picky about shoes and i was hoping to pay less than this, but i dont regret it. My husband has some, and im trying to get my mum to get some

Loveautumnhatewinter · 09/02/2025 12:45

Foot warmers that heat your feet up. They’re like inner soles you put in your shoe and will do the trick.

thornbury · 09/02/2025 12:46

A thick sole will help minimise contact between your feet and the ground. For smart work shoes, I wear FitFlop loafers that have a decent bottom.

olympicsrock · 09/02/2025 12:48

I wear my goretex walking boots - slightly big , thick soles and a pair of thermal socks

CinnamonJellyBeans · 09/02/2025 13:05

Uggs are thin and flimsy, no wonder you got cold. If you're going to spend hours watching your kids do winter sports, you need to be warm, or you will be miserable.

Anything with a thick rubber sole should be fine, even a pair of cheapish snowboots: Search on vinted for bargains.

Get some good real wool socks or well-reviewed ski socks, find a decent brand online and again, search on vinted, as there will be left over ones from Christmas presents still for sale.

I also had a massive supply of the disposable foot-wamers, mentioned by PP, but never actually needed them.

TheChosenTwo · 09/02/2025 13:11

I’ve got neoprene lined wellies, my are le chameau but I suspect loads of places sell them. Only problem I find with them is that it’s almost never cold enough for me to wear them as they make my legs feel sweaty!
If I was a football watcher I’d almost certainly wear them to that. Might be worth looking into, mine were silly money but really are super warm and toasty.

sunbum · 09/02/2025 13:13

I was amazed at how much difference the gore tex makes. You need a completely impermeable, waterproof outer layer that doent let water or air in. Uggs are nowhere near. mine are gore tex Nike Air Force one and i were them for everything that involves the cold outdoors, hiking, watching sports, standign in mud at Rugby. They are absolutely indestructible and after a qucik brush or wash look like new again, and v comfortable once worn in. Silk ski socks!

Octavia64 · 09/02/2025 13:15

Riding boots are not warm. They're just either leather boots or wellies in a particular style.

Personally I'd recommend thermal socks and snow boots as these are designed to handle both wet and low temperatures (that's what I wear all winter).

faustina · 09/02/2025 13:16

it's thick soles you need, as others have suggested. Fitflop do sheepskin boots similar to Uggs but with a better sole and as a fellow reynauds person I can recommend them. I bought these last winter and they're still going strong (and are surprisingly waterproof too):

Waterproof (ie gore-tex) shoes/boots and leg warmers round your ankles. Yes, those things we last saw on Jane Fonda in the 80s!

I have terrible circulation (not Reynauds afaik) and live in a very cold, old house, and wrist and ankle warmers have been a lifeline. I read some stuff about keeping your veins warm at these points of your extremities to keep hands and feet warmer and it seems to work for me.

SophieStrange · 09/02/2025 13:29

While I doubt I even love my own children enough that I’d watch them play football, if you want footwear to keep, your feet cosy while you stand around in the cold, the tried and tested answer is some goretex lined boots like Lowas or Alt-Bergs.

SeaSaltHairDo · 09/02/2025 15:24

Thanks everyone ☺
I genuineley had never made a link between a thick sole / platform and warmth before 😳

I do sometimes layer socks but (this sounds pathetic ha) but they often slip down and then it makes me feel even worse.

Also I have quite big feet so can't get the next size up in shoes to wear, factoring in an extra layer of socks.

I'm looking for some of these, what would you recommend?

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2025 15:26

Handwarmers in my boots was my go to.

Ollybob · 09/02/2025 15:32

Waterproof footwear with thermal socks. Uggs may have the sheepskin lining but the wind and cold gets in easily.
The waterproof liner keeps you feet much warmer. (Make sure they are waterproof using gore-tex or similar as water resistant won't cut it) Try and outdoor shop like go outdoors or Winfield's and take your socks with you for trying on as you may need to go up a size.
If you want to do it on a budget or quickly pop a plastic bag between a couple of pairs of socks, it's what we used to do as children when wearing wellies in the snow!

Ilovelowry · 09/02/2025 15:37

Outdoors to walk I wear 100% wool socks I buy in packs of 5 from ebay.

When I was watching kids sport, I wore wool socks with neoprene wellies.

At work I wear leather trainers with no socks, Socks 100% make my Raynauds worse if I'm indoors.

I was always told NEVER layer socks for raynauds, your toes need space around them for circulation. Extra socks traps in cold between the layers and pushes the toes together.

Omg you've unlocked a childhood memory for me! We used to always do this 😁 I hated wearing wellies and still do as my feet would get so cold in them

Oh that's interesting about the layering socks and not meant to be doing this if you have Reynauds (also realised I have been spelling it incorrectly!)
