Reynaulds misery - best footwear?

Just been watching DS football and my feet are absolutely freezing. It'll take all day for my toes to warm up; they are totally numb and then they hurt ☹ I was wearing uggs so thought I would be OK with a sheepskin lining but they are quite old and battered now and my feet were as cold as if I'd been wearing trainers. Has anyone got any suggestions please?
I am thinking about some riding boots but they are so dear and even second hand they cost a small fortune.
That being said, I can't carry on like this, I'm totally miserable! Thanks

I get very cold feet as I'm on blood thinners and have an underactive thyroid. Wool is your friend here as previous posters have said.

InfoSecInTheCity · 09/02/2025 15:53

I have diabetes with some circulation issues and get very cold feet, I've found leg warmers more effective than any socks I've tried, it seems keeping my calves warm keeps my feet warm. I got some from primark and wear them over leggings.

You should use the disposable foot warmers. From Amazon or outdoor shops like mountain warehouse.

Fellow sufferer here - warm socks, warm feet at home the.ln put them in warm to Sorrel Boots. Best buy ever. I also just cant stand out and watch the whole match so will go out after first half. I bought a full length Bench coat too and its helped keep my legs warmer than usual plus fleece lined leggings.

then and electric throw for home as they really thaw out my feet quickly - £40 from amazon will do!

I wear hiking boots as they have thick soles, with 3 pairs of socks including really thick thermal socks.
You have my sympathies! Both my ds play rugby and whilst I love watching them, the cold is miserable.

IkaBaar · 09/02/2025 16:29

I’d second Sorels, I have several pairs of their winter boots. I got a good deal on some at the end of winter a few years ago. They also tend to have a chunky sole.

Thanks everyone ☺
I genuineley had never made a link between a thick sole / platform and warmth before 😳

I do sometimes layer socks but (this sounds pathetic ha) but they often slip down and then it makes me feel even worse.

Also I have quite big feet so can't get the next size up in shoes to wear, factoring in an extra layer of socks.

Mens boots will come up bigger.

Depending upon your budget either snow boots, leather hiking boots with a sturdy sole and goretex lining, or winter insulated shooting/country boots. I love my ariat boots, warm, practical and reasonably attractive.

Buy a size up and get thermal foil backed wool topped insoles. Wear silk liner socks and knee length merino ski socks.

Wear a long coat and waterproof overtrousers for maximum warmth. Keeping your legs warm stops your feet from getting chilled.

Outdoors to walk I wear 100% wool socks I buy in packs of 5 from ebay.

When I was watching kids sport, I wore wool socks with neoprene wellies.

At work I wear leather trainers with no socks, Socks 100% make my Raynauds worse if I'm indoors.

I was always told NEVER layer socks for raynauds, your toes need space around them for circulation. Extra socks traps in cold between the layers and pushes the toes together.

This is why you need socks that aren't tight and roomy boots, leave space so your toes can wiggle. You need to trap air for warmth. Ideally put the socks on warm feet and warm the socks and boots so you aren't having to warm up cold air.

Agree with others - a leather boot with a decent sole is what you need. I have sorel but the sizes do come up small so you may struggle. I then add sheepskin insoles (sometimes have to take original ones out for fit) and wear 2 pairs of socks - one pair of normal crew socks then a thicker/warmer pair. As someone mentioned, make sure it's not all too tight as that can make raynauds worse

liveforsummer · 09/02/2025 17:10

I could never not have 2 pairs of socks in winter though

SeaSaltHairDo · 09/02/2025 17:31

Thanks for all the advice.
I also didn't get told about keeping my legs / calves warm. So useful to know! I think I'll get some legwarmers if Primark have any left in stock!

I have a warm coat which is great but it's not that long (I am pretty tall) and just comes down to my bum. I think when I need to replace it I will get a longer one, maybe calf-length.

I love watching the football but it really does cause me pain / numbness for the rest of the day; it's really miserable! ☹

Would deep heat work before you got to football?

Maggieb90 · 09/02/2025 17:44

I really like these socks, ordered a second lot. I find my feet need to be warm before I go out or they never get warm even with these socks. I also use the disposable feet warmers as mentioned by others but be careful about using them with memory foam shoes, I'm sure the heat from them distorted the memory foam in my Skechers and made them wider!

Thermal socks from Amazon are great with my walking boots. Can’t fit them into normal shoes though Heatgen is the brand I think

MumonabikeE5 · 09/02/2025 17:54

Good thick soles, waterproof uppers. and add inner soles with foil on one side and sheepskin on top.
cashmere socks

also making sure the rest of your body is proper warm, so doesn’t encourage the blood to go away from your extremities .
