New trainers - Sambas, Gazelles, Spezials?

I'm looking for a new pair of trainers and am leaning towards Sambas, but I realise they're everywhere atm and possibly will be on the decline fashion wise soon?

I also heard that they're quite narrow and Gazelles/Spezials are a bit wider? I do love all the different colourways and tempted for something bright, but am on the fence as a more classic colour will go with more?!

Any recommendations for anything similar welcome! Mainly to wear with wide legged trousers/jeans/dungarees. Thanks!

Genuinely, do you think your teen DC is the barometer of fashion? It always strikes me as a bit surprising when people quote or refer to what their kids are wearing. I don’t necessarily want to seek teens’ approval or wear what they like. I want to know what’s stylish and fashionable but teens don’t have a monopoly on that.

Tbh where trainers are concerned, they are more clued up than me, so I asked them. If it was a question on 90s pop I'd have answered myself. The aim was to be as helpful as possible for the OP. Your aim seems to have been just to have a pop at teenagers so I hope you enjoyed that. 🙄

I wear Puma Suede, they come in lots of colours. I always have black and then one other colour ( I have a burgundy and green pair as well as black at the moment). I found Adidas didn't suit my feet. But make sure they're actually "Suede" because the other cheaper ones don't last.

I find spezials really comfy but i have a high arch.

wipeywipe · 08/02/2025 19:56

Nike Cortez are very comfortable too

JustJazzy · 09/02/2025 06:49

I find spezials the most comfortable out of all 3(I have all 3), I do remove the arch support off the insole as its too high for me.
Imo Sambas would be the most narrow, then gazelle indoor, gazelles and spezials would be the widest. The suede on spezials is really soft.

SL72 & SL72rs(these are wider than the sl72) are both really comfortable aswell and don't have the high arch support.

I'd say go for a bright colour coming into spring/summer.

Classic Adidas never go 'out'. They always look good. Their Grand Court style might be an option if you want something wider.

Second Grand Court. Have 2 pairs wear them almost every day to work comfy from first wear and wee bit wider than other styles.
I do have a pair of Spezials too and I love the high arch because I have a high arch but if you don’t I could see them being uncomfortable.

JustJazzy · 09/02/2025 06:58

Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 are nice too and a little different than Adidas. They are wider fitting to sambas and look great with wide leg trousers. I have the black ones but regret not buying the yellow ones

jellyfishperiwinkle · 09/02/2025 07:00

Just get the ones that are most comfortable.

I used to have Gazelles in several colours 30 years ago, but always wore plasters with them for ages when they were new as they rubbed my feet to fuck otherwise. Don't be me aged 20. Trainers should be comfortable straight out of the box.

I find them all a bit flat and rigid for my flat feet now, and can't get my arch support insoles in them.

JustJazzy · 09/02/2025 07:01

Adidas campus are wider fitting, really comfortable and come in some lovely colours.

Cazziebo · 09/02/2025 07:48

I have neither taste nor style and shouldn't comment. However, I love my Hoffs. Loads of colours, so comfortable, waterproof and dead easy to clean. I've had my oldest ones for well over a year, wear them constantly and they still look and feel as good as new.

Skigal86 · 09/02/2025 07:48

I have a pair of the adidas breaknet sleek which are similar to sambas but a lot cheaper. They’ve got a cushioned insole and are SO comfy, right from the first time I put them on! Mine are the cream and purple ones.

Genesis G-Volley in the sale atm - the most comfortable trainers I've ever had (worn Adidas for years)

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 08:47

i have the country (?) ones & they tore my heels to shreds.

RavenT · 09/02/2025 09:04

Are any of these styles good if you need arch support and a comfortable footbed? I've worn NB 574 for the last few years as they are suit my feet and feel like slippers, but I keep looking at adidas for a change,...

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 09:06

@RavenT I have a high instep & like spezials the best.

oOiluvfriendsOo · 09/02/2025 09:16

I like Puma Suede and they come in lots of lovely colours.

Londontown12 · 09/02/2025 09:38

Adidas sl 72 are lovely !
Puma speedcats
slim trainers like low vintage trainers are in this year

myladyjane · 09/02/2025 09:39

You are bad people. I bought some pink trainers the other day with a hefty discount so I had enough in my new trainer budget that when I came across some turquoise campus trainers in the sale I could treat myself. Thank god for junior sizes...

FriendsDrinkBook · 09/02/2025 09:41

Gola elan? I've got gola harriers and they're very well made. Great colours too.

ProfessionalPirate · 09/02/2025 09:49

I think they all look more or less the same! So just go with whatever is most comfortable

ProfessionalPirate · 09/02/2025 09:55

Itiswhysofew · 08/02/2025 10:12

Her teen just said if she likes them, and added a little bit of advice; that's all.

Fair enough, but you do see it a lot on the SandB threads and I think it’s a bit strange. ‘My teenager says…’

Like, why is the poster giving her child’s opinion rather than her own? Confused

The spezials have a good arch support, it's too much for me so I take it off, it's a piece of foam underneath the insole. The insoles come out easily if you do want/need to replace them with more supportive ones.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 10:07

@ProfessionalPirate I think people perceive younger people to be a bit more ahead of trends etc. Some definitely are but many look a mess, I live near a big 6th form. 😆

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 10:07

I want the leopard sambas but I really do need more trainers!

fairycupcakes · 09/02/2025 11:08

@peachweach Bought these recently and love the look! I’ve always been a white trainer only kinda girl so wanted something different and I can definitely see these going with a lot (like you I love wide leg trousers, jeans etc) Had sambas in the past aswell and they are definitely more narrow imo. I also prefer to get wide-fit shoes in general and find these ones better than sambas however the instep has been a little uncomfortable for me (only got them the other day and worn them once though) because it’s quite high and I’ve got fairly flat feet x
