50+ women style and natural face inspiration

Inspired by @Lentilweaver and @Janbluesuary's comments on a thread yesterday...

I don't want to do anything to my face and need some inspiration for stylish women in their 50s, 60s and 70s who both look their age and look fantastic. I'm white, slim, with fairly thin skin that's prone to lines.

Kirsten Scott Thomas in Slow Horses is my current reason to keep away from Botox and other 'tweakments' as she looks incredible and wears her lines beautifully. (Sophie Okonedo is breathtaking of course, but has no wrinkles whereas I most definitely do!)

Who else can I look up to?

If I make it to my 70s 80s, I may well have some fun and go the full Iris Apfel. Don't yet have the confidence to stand out quite so much!!

Oh FFS. Tweakments in your 20s?
Of course a plastic surgeon would suggest that. Vultures feeding off women's insecurity.
This thread has now deteriorated into every other thread on S and B, suggesting tweakments and face lifts.

Edited

As I said, he doesn't do cosmetic work. He was giving her his very knowledgeable opinion.
ASFAIK, she has had no work done, I have known her for 19 years.
Neither have I at 56, so I don't think I am pushing anything.
It is probably how women in the public eye do have excellent PS without anyone noticing!

Thetigerdrankmywine · 02/02/2025 09:52

I think the problem with so many of them pretending they're ageing naturally, is that we lose sight of what 'looking good for your age' is.

I'm going to pick my aunty. She's in her 80s and still looks great. She also retired in her 50s, after a stressfree job and never had kids. That appears to be the biggest help- not having to do the daily grind forever.

The Pamela Anderson thing annoys me too. Fine, she's not wearing makeup. But show me all the ones that have honestly not had anything done. Like me. 😄

Lentilweaver · 02/02/2025 09:55

My mum is 80, looks great and has not had anything done. No one in my family has. But I can't post a pic of her.

I am going to say Hilary Mantel, a woman I greatly admired.

Yes to former athletes. Denise Lewis looks great.

Denise is ridiculously attractive! I always thought she was one of those who had the whole package. Talented, good looking, elegant and has the gravitas that comes with being smart too.

I am Indian, so quite a few of my models for aging well are also Indian. Madhur Jaffrey looks great in her 80s.

I’m loving your suggestions. Please keep them coming 😊

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 02/02/2025 10:20

I'd say my mum too. She's 77, and has amazingly few wrinkles. She's a bit plump, but fit as a fiddle I hope I am lucky enough to age the way she has!

Kate Winslet looks great. But I'd agree with what a ppl said, these people have always looked great, and so continue to when they're older.

wipeywipe · 02/02/2025 10:21

People forget about bone structure which makes a huge difference as you age, it's like scaffolding.

Cameron is beautiful but that is not the jawline of a middle aged woman who has had no work done.

My mother has a very defined jawline at this age, some do.

Equally it's not particularly helpful to compare to rich celebrities who may have had years of non surgical treatments eg lasers, massages, etc.

Annie Lennox is 70 and looks incredible. She has never had cosmetic surgery or used Botox and fillers.

Similar to Jamie Lee Curtis. But again, they're good looking women anyway. That and a smile gives such an advantage.

wipeywipe · 02/02/2025 10:26

a colleague of mine is friends with a plastic surgeon, (who works in non cosmetic NHS PS) that she was too late for botox etc, at 46, a face lift would be her best option. Apparently good, not noticeable tweekments, need to start in your 20's

I know a plastic surgeon who is against stuff in your 20s

Thetigerdrankmywine · 02/02/2025 13:31

I thought jl Curtis had had work done years ago?

I have a long face, weak chin and long jaw rather than stcky out one; think Elizabethan women in paintings. There's going to be very little jawline to hold everything up. I'm slim, but my whole face is going to slide into my neck soon.

Mrsredlipstick · 02/02/2025 13:54

I work in beauty. Have done for forty years. No botox, fillers or surgery.
I did train as a make up artist and it has protected my skin as I wore foundation daily.
I was in hospital recently and got asked my age frequently. Very kind as I thought I looked like death.
Do not smoke, sit in the sun or drink frequently. That's my advice.
I use everything from Aldi, Kanzen (both cheap) to Dr Sister and Shiseido (expensive).
I think good teeth and shaped brows help. An exfoliating scrub and sun protection are essential.
I always like a bright lipstick like Annie Lennox.
FWIW I don't think Cameron Diaz is on the tweakments or surgeons knife. She supposedly refused to wax for Charlie's Angels!

I admit I’m not quite sure about the meaning of the thread - as you can’t take someone else’s face, however much you may admire them.

Rather than celebrities with retinues of people dedicated to making them look good, I tend to focus on beautiful clothes and think about their sustainable use in my own wardrobe as I get older. (I’m in my 60s.) After decades of careless wearing and discarding I now consciously buy things in the hope that at least some of them will see me through whatever the future throws at me.

Anyway - don’t know if this is of any use:

My ‘style’ probably intersects most with Véronique Tristram’s - but I look nothing like her.

Garlicworth · 02/02/2025 15:21

Well, I'm not suggesting a rigidly curled hairdo and sensible white shoes, but I'm pretty sure her face wasn't tweaked or lifted. QE2 in her fifties.

If you want to embrace how you look as you age, just try focus on the things you like about how you look and accentuate those.
There is no point looking at anyone else and holding yourself to that arbitrary standard, for all the reasons previously mentioned and because people just age differently. You don’t really know what way things will go. It’s better not to cultivate a mental image of what you want to look like as much as possible, better to try just take things as they come.

HeyIamhappynow · 02/02/2025 16:51

These threads always end up with some posters disagreeing on who has had work done and who hasn’t. It’s a shame women tend to be judged so much on their appearance

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/02/2025 17:13

I don’t know about the work they have had done, and I do think most women in the public eye have likely had some, but I love Sarah Jessica Parker. She is a total style icon for me, and more natural looking than many her age. Also Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh.

OddBoots · 02/02/2025 17:22

She is 78 but I think Dame Penelope Wilton has always looked amazing, she has a warmness and a kind twinkle to her which always looks great.

chargeitup · 01/02/2025 23:04

Excuse me? I'm almost 60 and I have a defined jawline with only the tiniest hint of a jowl

Not everyone loses their jawline. CD is very lean. I think that makes a huge difference to the jawline

You are blessed 😇
Would you be happy to post a lower face and neck pic?

Well you've taken my first suggestion with KST! I will read the thread and have a think!
