Does this outfit sound ok for party tonight?

Going as plus one to 50th party tonight with people I don’t know. Meeting some of bf friends for first time.
so I don’t really know how smart they are generally!

Its a 50th party, in a sports club bar (a sort of middle class sport 😆), the invite said about DJ and bringing your dancing shoes.

i generally like to play it safe with clothes, am early 40s, shortish, size 14-16.
dont really have any jeans that look smart at the moment so jeans and a “nice top” isn’t an easy option, don’t have silk shirts or leather look leggings (i have searched old threads 😆)

I was planning to wear a jersey black mock wrap fitted dress. I feel nice in it and I think it’s flattering with a bit of ruching. 3/4 sleeves.
medium heel black ankle boots and some patterned/lacy tights to make it slightly more interesting.

Does that sound ok? And like I won’t be over dressed? Am thinking surely there’ll be some others there in dresses.
I’m not looking to make a style statement! But don’t want to feel I’ve pitched it wrong.

You definitely won't be overdressed! It sounds a bit mum-sy, but if you're not looking to make a fashion statement and feel good in it, go for it.

Have fun!

User7288339 · 01/02/2025 13:17

Yes I acknowledge it probably does 😬
not sure what a good alternative would be,
am on a weight loss journey so not got loads of clothes and feel a bit lost. For so long have felt I’ve not got loads of choice in what to wear, have to go with the few things that fit my shape, and just want to blend in.

The dress and boots sound fine, but agree could be a bit bland. I’m not a fan of patterned tights and they certainly make things more frumpy in my opinion, not less.

Have a look at the styling of those types of dresses on shop’s sites. They would usually be with bare legs.

User7288339 · 01/02/2025 13:23

But then what shoes? Can’t really do boots and bare legs and would feel too smart in heels or sandals I think.
would sheer black tights be better maybe?
because im a bit short and the dress is just below the knee there won’t be loads of lacy black tight leg showing

Dammit knew I should’ve asked here earlier 😆

Have you got any plain brightly coloured tights? Turquoise, pink, grass green?
Or could you pick some up from somewhere?
And a funky necklace?

User7288339 · 01/02/2025 13:33

Brightest tights I have is probably burgundy
I have some necklaces to choose from but tend to go delicate rather than chunky
will wear big earrings, thin hoops maybe

User7288339 · 01/02/2025 13:34

Gah now I’m doubting everything 😆
have a purpley pink top with some lace on and sheer sleeves, I could wear with black jeans maybe. I just think dresses suit me better

BigDahliaFan · 01/02/2025 13:37

If you feel nice in it wear it with a big smile. And good earrings.

Christ OP don't do this!

gingercat02 · 01/02/2025 13:47

50th parties we have been to were either jeans and a top or full-on dress and heels. I would wear the black dress if it fits and you feel comfortable in it, but bling up the jewellery and choose more interesting footwear

HereComesEverybody · 01/02/2025 14:15

What kind of boots are they OP?

I think you should wear your dess & whatever tights you fancy (not bright colours though 😬)

Do your hair or get a blow dry, nice make up, nice perfume & nice jewellery. Perhaps get your nails paint & if you like lipstick wear a red or more vibrant ine

Just be friendly & open to meeting new people & you will make a great impression.

Your will blend in just fine & I'm sure you'll have a great time. And congrats on the weight loss!

TenThousandSpoons · 01/02/2025 14:19

The dress and your original tights sound good. Have a lovely time!

User7288339 · 01/02/2025 16:17

Thanks all, still dithering between the black dress (I wish it was shorter, it’s below knee, but is quite low cut) and the purple top with black jeans (which I think are slightly ill fitting).
but I know really whatever will be fine and it’s more important to feel comfortable and confident.
Just normally I’d text a female friend going and suss out what they’re wearing to gauge the dress code but not got that option here.

thought the black dress might be a safer middle ground between dressier and more casual.

Wowser01 · 01/02/2025 16:21

Wear the dress! You feel nice in it so I am sure it will be fine and you can’t go wrong with a black dress.

Onleemoi · 01/02/2025 16:38

Wear the black dress, feeling comfortable is important. Go and have a good time, no one worthwhile will be thinking “she’s played it safe”.

Pumpkincozynights · 01/02/2025 16:51

Wear the dress with jewellery and make up.

QuaterMiss · 01/02/2025 17:08

The dress sounds better. As long as you’re not wearing ‘brightly coloured tights’ you’ll be fine …

Hope you have a nice time. But, going forward, if you’re planning to be socialising with the same person more often, it might be an idea to pre-emptively equip yourself with some suitably out-worthy clothes.

You don’t need anything flouncy or lace-embellished or in strange colours - just a few straightforward separates in decent fabrics that fit you and go together.

Plaided · 01/02/2025 17:08

Depends what sport! If it’s a football or rugby club, then I would say jeans. If it’s a golf club, then probably a dress!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/02/2025 17:10

Dress and lace tights sounds fine. Grass green or red tights sound bloody awful imvho.

Purple top and black jeans sounds a bit early 90s goth, which may or may not be what you want!

ApolloandDaphne · 01/02/2025 17:11

Wear what you feel most comfortable in. No one will look twice at you. Get some wine down you and have fun!

Lifelover16 · 01/02/2025 17:15

Black dress, patterned tights and boots sound perfect - jazz up with your hoop earrings, nice hair and makeup and you’ll look lovely! Have a great time!

QuaterMiss · 01/02/2025 17:20

No one will look twice at you.

Perhaps I’m so ancient that this phrase has changed its meaning? Because the old meaning was pretty insulting and definitely not what you’d say to someone getting dressed for a party …

Hoolihan · 01/02/2025 17:26

The dress, patterned tights and boots sound great OP and more importantly you feel good in them. Your outfit sounds like it's understated but sexy and will give you confidence.

PLEASE do not wear turquoise tights and a 'funky necklace'.

Im ancient too but i wouldn't say it was derogatory. I just meant people will be there celebrating and having fun and are unlike to be eye rolling at OP in her black dress.
