Does this outfit sound ok for party tonight?

Going as plus one to 50th party tonight with people I don’t know. Meeting some of bf friends for first time.
so I don’t really know how smart they are generally!

Its a 50th party, in a sports club bar (a sort of middle class sport 😆), the invite said about DJ and bringing your dancing shoes.

i generally like to play it safe with clothes, am early 40s, shortish, size 14-16.
dont really have any jeans that look smart at the moment so jeans and a “nice top” isn’t an easy option, don’t have silk shirts or leather look leggings (i have searched old threads 😆)

I was planning to wear a jersey black mock wrap fitted dress. I feel nice in it and I think it’s flattering with a bit of ruching. 3/4 sleeves.
medium heel black ankle boots and some patterned/lacy tights to make it slightly more interesting.

Does that sound ok? And like I won’t be over dressed? Am thinking surely there’ll be some others there in dresses.
I’m not looking to make a style statement! But don’t want to feel I’ve pitched it wrong.

That’s not what the phrase means, though!

‘No one will look twice at you’ would usually be said as ‘ No one would look twice at her’ - indicating that the woman in question would be considered exceptionally plain compared to other women. It’s the sort of thing an early 20th century parent with daughters to marry off might say of her frenemy’s bookish, mousey daughter who’s just inexplicably become engaged to a billionaire.

What I mean is - you would never say it to someone’s face, only behind their back!

We will have to agree to disagree i think @QuaterMiss

Have you got any plain brightly coloured tights? Turquoise, pink, grass green?
Or could you pick some up from somewhere?
And a funky necklace?

Yes, OP, do this if you want to look like Su Pollard.

@User7288339 how did you night go?

User7288339 · 02/02/2025 13:07

Thanks all! Had a good time!
and felt I’d pitched the dress code “right”. There was a complete range from a couple of women in jeans to a full on sequin shift dress.
No one looked twice at me (in a good way 😆)

What you propose sounds great , I shudder at the thought of a black wrap dress with bright green tights - grottbag
