Collagen- which one!

TesterPotQueen · 31/01/2025 21:38

I am early sixties and fancy trying a collagen supplement for 3-6 months and longer if it works. I'm mostly wanting it for my nails and my joints, although younger looking skin would be a great bonus! I've done quite a bit of research but I'm still confused! Marine/bovine/denatured....etc
Was wondering about a brand called British Supplements?

Any real life recommendations from you lot?

Also anything anyone has taken that's really helped joints? I have arthritic fingers and toes which are increasingly giving me a hard time.
Thanks

I take ancient and brave true collagen and its really helped my bad knees. If I need a bit more (when it’s cold or I’ve done a lot of exercise) I top up with their noble collagen tablets - I take a couple of courses of those a year but never miss true collagen in my morning coffee. I’m mid 40s but knee and hips are shot after years of intense ballet as a child.
TBH I think you’d get the same result with cheaper (wellguard is decent on Amazon) but I absolutely can’t taste this one and others sometimes I have done.

TiramisuThief · 31/01/2025 21:56

I use protein rebel run easy.

I'm 44 and run a lot and my knees would complain after an intense week. No problems since I started taking it and my hair and nails are fantastic.

Agree with PP, you'd probably get good results with something cheaper but I tried some capsules off amazon before and they did nothing. Couple of spoons of this a day and within a week I felt better.

Cheesypumpkin · 31/01/2025 21:57

I used ancient and brave for nearly a year.
Wonderful stuff but have just changed to willpowers collagen and so far so good

Jemimapuddleduk · 31/01/2025 21:59

Willpowders is brilliant

LittleGreenDragons · 31/01/2025 21:59

Can anyone provide links please? I'm using collagen gummies from Superdrug and I think they help a little bit but not enough.

LittleGreenDragons · 31/01/2025 22:00

oh bugger. I used the special word beginning with gum 😣

Youcanttakeanelephantonthebus · 31/01/2025 22:03

Does anyone find it gives you wind/bloating? I use ancient and brave but my stomach always feels quite gurgly every night and I think it's that causing it.

venus7 · 31/01/2025 22:52

I've just bought some from British Supplements; haven't started the course, but have had slippery elm from them, and it's very good quality.
Their collagen is marine, which is considered better than bovine.
I'm aching because I'm moving house, and packing boxes, shifting furniture etc is hard on joints.........better skin a bonus, of course!

Hi Venus, can you share why marine is considered better than bovine please?

It's quite easy to find something to read; this, for example.

Collagen- which one!
TesterPotQueen · 01/02/2025 09:20

Thanks for the replies. It's good to hear that it is helping some of you with your joints, I'm going to give it a go. Sounds like marine might be the way forward.

I tried ancient and brave but did not like the bovine one at all, the smell and taste gave me the ick!
Now I’m using a Vitawell marine peptides one from Home Bargains which has a nicer flavour and is cheaper, with the same benefits. (I also have creaky knees!)

Summerdew · 01/02/2025 09:27

Thanks Venus, I’ve read a lot of conflicting theories on this, but I suppose the best one is the one you take regularly and don’t just leave on the side gathering dust!

BeretInParis · 01/02/2025 09:33

I use Hunter and Gather. It has Types 1 and 3 collagen which means it's apparently good for creaky knees and wrinkly skin. I think it's possibly working but it's hard to tell for sure.

FortWalton · 01/02/2025 09:35

I've been using British Supplements Collagen and Silica for over a year now. Hair better, nails getting there, hip pain gone. Would recommend

ProperDeep · 01/02/2025 09:49

Can I ask why those of you taking a supplement don’t feel you can get enough collagen from a normal balanced diet? Which we should theoretically be able to do.

I’m a similar age to @TesterPotQueen and put a fair amount of thought and effort into absolutely packing my diet with the best possible nutrition - veg box, wholefoods, fish bone broth, etc, etc. Do I really need a supplement on top of all that?

I'm just taking it because my hair is falling out after illness and if someone told me eating a spoon of black pepper every hour helped, I would do it! I figure no harm done and the one I'm using isn't expensive

Using this one, Hunter and gather smelled to me, this one doesn't

I started taking Willpowders bovine collagen in December for my post menopausal thinning hair. I take it in my morning coffee, zero taste. I only take a teaspoon and can’t say I’ve noticed any difference but I think it’s early days yet, most supplements need at least 3 months before any noticeable difference. Or I might need to take more….

Lakel · 01/02/2025 11:48

Any collagen you take will be digested into its component amino acids in order to be absorbed. So a) any increase in any protein consumption will do the same job, and b) an extra teaspoon a day will do bugger all, it’s not a vitamin.

ProperDeep · 01/02/2025 12:28

Was a) an answer for me, @Lakel? I already consume plenty of all the things (except meat because pescatarian) Google AI suggests:

Foods that support collagen production

Protein: Meat, fish, dairy, eggs, beans, and legumes
Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, berries, leafy greens, and bell peppers
Copper: Shellfish, nuts, seeds, and whole grains
Zinc: Nuts and seeds
Proline: Meat, dairy products, and certain vegetables like asparagus and spinach
Glycine: Fish, meat, dairy, and legumes
Sulfur: Garlic

And if collagen doesn’t work like vitamins, what sort of unit of ‘extra’ do people need to notice a difference?

TiramisuThief · 01/02/2025 13:12

I know what you're saying @Lakel and I would have said the same as you before, but the effect is undeniable.

I eat a really good diet and try hard to hit protein goals and yet....

It wasn’t an answer to you, it was an answer to the whole thread - collagen, which one? My point was any collagen, or none and just up your protein instead, because there is no difference to your nutrition between taking collagen and eating more protein, because they are digested into the same building blocks - amino acids.

Collagen isn’t a vitamin because it’s a protein, it’s part of your macro nutrition, not micro nutrition like vitamins and minerals, you need tiny quantities of these, which is why a supplement is possible (effective is another question). The only collagen supplement I have looked into, the recommend dose was two massive capsules four times a day. You’re better off with a slab of tofu, or bigger portions of your roast chicken.

I didn’t say it didn’t work 🤷‍♀️, just that more protein would do the same job. There is no point in paying out to consume collagen, it is impossible for it to enter your bloodstream and make it to your skin as collagen.

roselilylavender · 01/02/2025 16:30

I take the Ancient & Brave one. I alternate, taking the marine one one day and the bovine one the next. Loads of people say it is tasteless but I found them both pretty grim UNTIL I started using boiling water to dissolve the powder and then topping it up with cold water
